America 1881: They Call Me Legend

Chapter 98 The showdown in the dark room

Holmes is a little weird.

The man in front of me didn't seem to be in a hurry at all, and he hadn't said a word since he came in.

He didn't come in like that old Mexican Hernandez and press him about the treasure map; nor did he put a sack over his head like Hanif.

However, adhering to the experience of "If you don't talk nonsense, you won't get beaten", Holmes said nothing and just looked at the room silently.

There was a candle burning on the table in front of him. The candlelight flickered, and the light in the room was dim.

There were some books on the bookshelf at the back. Holmes squinted and looked at them, but he couldn't see clearly, but there should be many categories, both old and new.

This is rare in small towns in the West.

The man in front of him was standing in front of the bookshelf, with his back to him, fingering the ridges of the books on the shelf.

The sounds outside the window gradually became quieter, and the Ku Klux Klansmen who brought him away stayed away from the area and gathered somewhere unknown.

The man finally turned around.

He was wearing a gray suit, which was very neat and wrinkle-free; the collar was tied with a somewhat complicated-looking bow tie.

He took off his hat, revealing his pale hair, but when he raised his head, Holmes discovered that the lower half of his face was covered by a triangular mask, which was incompatible with his gentlemanly attire.

Out of place.

"Please sit down." The old man stretched out his hand and pointed to the chair in front of the table, and sat down opposite Holmes.

Holmes hesitated, but still chose to sit in the chair.

He placed the treasure map and notebook on the table, then retracted his hands and placed them on his lap.

The old man didn't go to get the picture or notebook. His next move frightened Holmes half to death.

He reached for his mask.

Holmes quickly covered his eyes with his hands:

"I didn't see anything!"

This person was wearing a mask when the Ku Klux Klan members came in. He definitely didn't want others to know his identity. Now that he is seen, he will most likely be silenced.

"Mr. Holmes, there are only you and me here. I fully trust you, so please remove your hands." The old man's voice came from the other side.

Holmes remained unmoved and still closed his eyes tightly.

"I haven't worn this thing for a long time. To be honest, I don't like it very much. But sometimes, people still have to face the world with another side. Don't you agree, Mr. Holmes?"

The old man's voice was unhurried and slow.

"Let's get down to business. I know you are an excellent geologist and archaeologist. I guess you have already studied the secrets of this treasure map, right?"

The sound of fingers tapping on the table was heard, and the old man's voice reached Holmes's ears.

"Join me, your colored friends have no idea what they're looking for, it's not just treasure."

Holmes said nothing. He was surprised by the old man's straightforwardness, and even more surprised by his words.

He seems to know more than himself.

"You don't have to wait any longer for your colored friends. I watched them leave town. If they come back, Thomas and his dozens of men will deal with them."

Holmes smelled the pungent smell of burning phosphorus and sulfide, followed by the choking smell of burning tobacco, and he couldn't help but cough a few times.

"Although Thomas has now become a bandit, in his eyes, all people of color deserve to die just like black people."

"If the Pinkerton gang hadn't been nearby last time, I would have taken action long ago. They couldn't even get out of Montrose."

There was a trace of regret in the old man's voice, as if he could have put his plan into effect long ago.

"Think about it."

"How about I choose for him?"

A male voice came from outside the door, and at the same time as his voice, there was the sound of the door being broken in and several gunshots.

Holmes reacted immediately. He skillfully got under the table. When he opened his eyes, he found that the candles in the room were extinguished.

I don't know when there was an open door on the wall behind the bookshelf.

The person who rushed in was Chen Jianqiu.

When he arrived at the grocery store, it was dark, with only the light coming from the window of a small room at the back.

Chen Jianqiu touched the bottom of the window and looked inside.

From the window, he could only see Holmes covering his eyes, and someone was talking to him opposite him.

The position of this man was very particular. His voice could only be heard, but he could not be seen. From the window position, he could not be seen at all, let alone shoot.

However, he had roughly guessed who this person was, and he made a risky decision.

Break in through the front door.

The moment Chen Jianqiu kicked the door open, the candles in the room went out, and he pulled the triggers of the two Colts in his hands.

But a feeling of danger came suddenly.

It was a feeling of death. The last time I had this feeling was when Fultz shot him in the back at Lark Field Farm.

He lowered his head abruptly.

A bullet flew past his scalp and hit the wooden door.

The shooter on the other side was shooting faster than him!

Chen Jianqiu rolled forward, knocking all the chairs in the room to pieces.

He turned on the shooter mode, but the room was completely dark, without even a faint light.

He can amplify the weak light in the darkness, but he cannot create light out of thin air.

But then the opponent made a mistake.

His gun fired again, following the trajectory of Chen Jianqiu knocking over the chair, sweeping all the way, and directly flipped the hammer on the other side, turning the revolver into full automatic.

There was a flash of light from the muzzle of the gun.

In just a moment, Chen Jianqiu locked the position on the opposite side, and the two Colts in his hands sounded again.

"Wow!"

"Peng!"

First, a shelf in the room was hit, and then an open door appeared on the wall, and a black figure jumped out of the door.

Chen Jianqiu rushed to the door, leaned against the door and looked outside. He did not rush out.

Opposite him was a very experienced gunman, but he was just a bit unlucky.

He counted the gunfire from the opposite side. Even if it was a six-shot revolver, there was at least one bullet left on the opposite side. If he chased it rashly, he might be fired by the opposite side.

The back door was facing the moon. He looked inside the room through the moonlight that came in. The bookshelf fell to the ground, the books on the shelf were scattered all over the floor, and a trail of blood ran from the table to the door.

Chen Jianqiu once again entered a brief shooter state. After confirming that there was no ambush outside the door, he chased him out along the blood trail.

The bloodstain continued into the yard behind the grocery store and then stopped abruptly.

It was a messy place with all kinds of debris piled up.

The opponent was injured, and he did not forget to use some special method to cover his tracks while escaping.

"What an old fox." Chen Jianqiu inserted the revolver into the holster.

If Feiniao were by his side at this moment, he would definitely lead him to find a way to chase him to the end.

Take advantage of his illness and kill him.

But now he can only return to that room.

Holmes had put away his notebook and treasure map and was waiting for him outside the door.

"I don't want to play anymore, no matter how much money I give, I won't play anymore." He couldn't bear it anymore and said to Chen Jianqiu in a state of collapse.

"Oh? No problem, I never force others." Chen Jianqiu glanced at Holmes while adjusting his saddle.

He took out a gold bar from the bag, threw it to Holmes, and then took the notes and treasure map from Holmes' hand.

"I wish you good luck." Chen Jianqiu got on the horse, turned the horse's head, and headed towards the other side of the street.

Five seconds later, Holmes shouted from behind:

"Chen! Save me! Chen!"

Chen Jianqiu turned around and saw Holmes running towards him.

Not far behind him, a bull was driving towards them with several white robes.
