American Comics: BOSS Invasion
#1016 - case
Qi Shan had just stepped into the side hall when his father, Li Renxiao, spoke.
"My son is here! Quickly, come and meet Magistrate Ma and General Du Mingze!"
Qi Shan had met Magistrate Ma a few times, and they could be considered acquaintances. However, in this era, etiquette couldn't be abandoned, so he respectfully cupped his hands and bowed, earnestly saying, "Li Qi Shan greets Milord, greets General Du!"
The valiant man waved his hand impatiently, his eyes betraying undisguised suspicion.
"I'm not a general, just a commandant. Otherwise, I wouldn't have been stuck with this miserable task of escorting a wretched old man to the capital to be beheaded. And halfway there, he inexplicably turned into a white fox! Why do all the messed-up things happen to me?
Magistrate Ma has already told me about your matter, young man, but I don't believe it. So many adults couldn't handle it, but a mere child can take care of it so easily? What's the point of us officials then? We might as well give our positions to kids!"
Qi Shan calmly said, "My lord is right. Under normal circumstances, that's indeed the case. But when it comes to me, the principles have to change a bit. You don't need to ask what the changes are. Seeing is believing, and hearing is deceiving. Give me the time it takes to drink a cup of tea, and I'll definitely get to the bottom of this matter!"
General Du couldn't help but sneer, "You're a cocky little brat! Were you raised on toad meat from childhood?"
Upon hearing this, Magistrate Ma and Li Renxiao couldn't help but frown, but Qi Shan remained calm.
"Regardless of what I was raised on, I should at least have the time it takes for an incense stick to burn, right?
It won't be any loss to you. If I can find the real culprit and resolve the matter perfectly, General Du can complete this mission as soon as possible and enjoy a carefree life without worries. If I don't have any answers, you can think of other methods. It won't delay either of us, so why not?"
"Alright, I have to admit you have a point, kid. But if this cup of tea's worth of time is wasted and you really can't find anything out, don't blame me for punishing you!"
General Du raised an eyebrow, a hint of provocation in his eyes. Clearly, this boorish man still didn't believe a child could be better than him.
Qi Shan's face remained impassive, but he was somewhat disappointed inside.
When he first heard that a general escorting a prison cart was passing through Beizhuang, Qi Shan thought he had encountered *A Chinese Ghost Story: The Human World*.
He couldn't help but recite "The ten-mile lake is frosted over" in his mind.
But after meeting this so-called General Du, his hopes were dashed. This guy was indeed an uneducated fool, a far cry from the Taoist-using escort officer in the movie.
"Alright!"
Li Renxiao didn't refuse. The previous cases were the same; no matter what case was being solved, the whole story had to be explained clearly.
Li Renxiao was used to it. He pondered for a moment and said, "This matter is quite simple, but somewhat bizarre!
General Du was escorting a prisoner and stopped at Beizhuang to rest. Most of the soldiers were eating and resting, but four soldiers were still closely guarding the prisoner.
The prisoner didn't show any signs of abnormality throughout the entire process, always sitting in the prison cart with his head hanging down dejectedly.
Ever since hearing the verdict of immediate execution from the capital, the prisoner had been in this state. However, during the changing of the guard, the four soldiers stood up. In the blink of an eye, the prisoner in the cart had disappeared.
In his place was a snow-white fox.
There were no signs of the shackles and chains being opened; they were all piled up inside the prison cart, as if the person had vanished into thin air."
"I understand!"
Qi Shan nodded and cupped his hands towards General Du, "Now, please have General Du gather all the soldiers in the escort team. I have a few words to ask!"
"That's easy!"
General Du simply raised his hand, and the personal guard immediately ran out. After a while, a large group of soldiers straggled over.
Qi Shan said to Magistrate Ma, "Please, Milord, hold court as usual!"
Magistrate Ma smiled and said, "Don't worry, it's already prepared!"
Magistrate Ma had a lot of confidence in Qi Shan. Several previous unsolved cases had been clearly investigated by Qi Shan in just a few moments.
Although he didn't understand how Qi Shan found the real culprit, he was very familiar with his methods. Moreover, after several collaborations, the yamen runners were also well aware of Qi Shan's methods.
Unlike ordinary children who only acted like adults, causing people to hesitate subconsciously, they still had to look at Magistrate Ma.
This was exactly what Qi Shan wanted!
Qi Shan cupped his hands, Magistrate Ma nodded, and beckoned everyone to go out together.
In the courtyard, the three classes of yamen runners quickly ran out and lined up in two rows, sandwiching the soldiers in the middle. Each of them had a serious expression, standing upright, creating a solemn atmosphere.
Someone quickly carried out the desk and chairs and set up a simple open-air court.
Ignoring the soldiers' suspicious gazes, Qi Shan climbed onto the smallest chair in a grand manner and sat down properly.
"Everyone, soldiers, I believe you all understand why we suddenly set up a court here.
I won't go into the specific reasons. A prisoner of the imperial court has mysteriously disappeared right under your noses. Aside from talk of gods, ghosts, demons, and foxes, the most suspicious thing is that there's a mole. My duty is to eliminate everyone's suspicion.
I've learned the general process of the entire event from General Du. It's indeed very bizarre, but I believe so many eyes must have seen something unusual. Does anyone have anything to say?"
Qi Shan didn't introduce himself at all, but simply said a few words to everyone and went straight to the point.
At this point, Qi Shan paused, giving everyone about 10 seconds. Most of the soldiers had suspicious expressions, but after looking at Magistrate Ma and General Du standing behind them, they knew that this little devil had been authorized, so they paid more attention to Qi Shan.
The scene was quiet for a while, and no one spoke. Qi Shan nodded calmly, "I understand. It seems I have to use some tricks. You may not know, my name is Li Qi Shan, and the people of Beizhuang call me the Immortal Child.
How did this name come about? I won't mention it for now. I just want to remind you, it's best not to take any chances. In front of these eyes of mine, no secret can be hidden!
Since no one is speaking, then I can only find a way to make you speak. Bring them up!"
