American Comics: BOSS Invasion

#1177 - Case handling

As soon as he finished speaking, Li Fengyun shot a stream of lava from his hand, directly onto the other person's face. The middle-aged man screamed, dropped his phone, and clutched his face, rolling on the ground. His screams were sharp and piercing, like a wildcat being skinned alive, sending chills down one's spine.

The commotion at the front desk disturbed the entire internet cafe, and many people ran out to see what was happening.

Li Fengyun calmly picked up the phone, examined it briefly, and wiped the grease and fingerprints off the screen with a hint of disgust before putting it back in his pocket. He kicked the middle-aged man away and grabbed a charger from the bar before slowly walking away.

After screaming loudly, the middle-aged man stopped moving. The lava on his face gradually solidified, forming a hard cement-like shell. The intense heat had already cooked his face, head, and brain. A strange aroma even emanated from his neck, but the rest of his body remained unchanged. The surrounding people could feel the strange heat.

Suddenly, someone screamed, and the onlookers scattered in all directions.

Several quick-witted individuals rushed behind the bar, smashed open the cash register, grabbed the money inside, and fled.

Seeing this, the others realized that the boss was dead, and the scene was just a dead body. If they didn't seize the opportunity to grab something, they wouldn't have another chance.

The remaining people went crazy, rushing towards the nearest computers, grabbing the computer towers, monitors, keyboards, and even the drinks from the refrigerator. They ransacked the place like a swarm of locusts, leaving the internet cafe in ruins, with only a few crooked tables left and no electronic devices in sight.

An hour later, Harvey and Jim Gordon arrived at the internet cafe, which was surrounded by police. They were examining the surveillance equipment.

Harvey held a pen and notebook, carefully observing the surroundings, even taking a walk outside. Jim Gordon was very interested in the corpse on the ground, looking at it from all angles while waiting for the medical examiner's report.

"As expected, the guy's head and neck are almost cooked through. The substance covering his face is ordinary volcanic lava, but judging from its state, it was cooled down not long ago.

The victim's head and neck have been cooked, or rather, burned thoroughly. His entire facial skeleton has been burned through, and the bones are almost melting. If we couldn't see the events unfolding on the surveillance footage, we wouldn't even be able to identify him!"

The temporary medical examiner gave a simple and clear explanation before instructing his assistant to quickly move the body to the vehicle. He needed to perform an autopsy. The inside of the body was irrelevant; the guy clearly died from lava to the face. Such a miraculous death was a first. This was a valuable specimen that couldn't be missed.

Harvey said expressionlessly, "The surveillance footage is clear. These guys either forgot to take the tape or didn't care. Some officers are already tracking them down, but I don't have high hopes. The victim is dead, and no one will push them to solve the case."

Jim Gordon repeatedly reviewed the closed-circuit television footage, not paying much attention to the looting that followed. After all, this was Gotham. What was robbery? Even with several people sitting in the store with guns, being robbed wasn't unheard of.

"This guy actually threw a ball of lava with his bare hands. That's too strange. Could it be some kind of illusion?"

"We can't rule out that possibility, but it's unlikely!"

Harvey shook his head. "We've found several eyewitnesses, and their accounts are consistent. They didn't see him carrying any strange devices. He just waved his hand, and a ball of lava hit the guy's face."

"So, we're looking for a superhuman?"

Jim was skeptical. "How could there be superhumans in this world? Isn't that just something from comic books?"

"How does that saying go? Art imitates life, Jim Gordon. This is Gotham City. Nothing is surprising, no matter what form it takes."

A voice suddenly came from the right. The two turned to see Qishan walking in with his partner, Sophia.

Harvey frowned. "Qishan, if I remember correctly, you shouldn't be assigned to the homicide division."

"Very funny. Of course, I'm with the robbery and theft division. The case is clear: the murder and the robbery were committed by two different groups. You can handle the murderer yourself, whether you catch them or issue a warrant. It's none of my business. I'm mainly responsible for the customers who stole things.

What? Are you saying you're obstructing my investigation? If you have a valid reason, I have no objections!"

Qishan smiled at Harvey. This guy was a veteran. He had survived from his youth until now without being shot, which meant he knew how to compromise.

In fact, Harvey was a lot like the younger Harvey, just like Jim, with dreams of justice. He hoped to change the situation in Gotham through the law.

He had worked like a madman for a while, believing that if he worked hard enough to catch more criminals and clean up the evil, he could make Gotham a little cleaner. But later events gradually proved that Gotham itself was a quagmire, constantly breeding evil.

Because this was closely related to the upper echelons of Gotham, the criminals he arrested were just bubbles that were uneasily rising from beneath the calm surface, and were abandoned by the city of sin. It didn’t matter whether they were arrested or not.

But even so, Harvey still hoped that he could walk on the path of justice, even if this justice was much narrower, more biased, required him to compromise with many people, and change some of his principles, but in the end, he still belonged to justice.

After all, he was fulfilling his duties as a police officer. Jim Gordon was a rookie, trying to change the situation of the entire city with only enthusiasm, just like Harvey in the beginning. Perhaps that was why Harvey verbally resisted but still helped Jim handle various cases without hesitation.
