American Comics: BOSS Invasion
#319 - Charles
Wolverine downed a bottle of wine and recounted the whole story from beginning to end.
He wasn't very patient and didn't go into much detail, but Caliban listened intently, occasionally interjecting with questions about key information.
"Unbelievable, has technology really advanced to this extent?"
Caliban stared at Logan's belt, a look of envy flashing in his eyes.
He was long past tired of dragging his weary body around, eking out a living.
Over the years, he had longed for the past more than once.
Although the past wasn't pleasant, filled with blood, conspiracies, and betrayals, at least he had a healthy body.
No matter how many storms one weathered, people were ultimately defeated by time, whether it was himself or Charles.
Thinking of Charles, Caliban realized he seemed to have forgotten something.
He rummaged through the medicine box and said, "Regardless, these medicines are a great help, you know? He should have taken his medicine six hours ago! He had two convulsions today, and he kept trying to read my mind. It felt like a catfish was squeezing into my brain…"
He trailed off, clearly not wanting to recall that terrible sensation.
Wolverine placed his glass on the table, found a bottle of medicine, and walked out the door.
"I'll go check on him!"
Caliban shook his head. "That's rare! Looks like he's in a good mood today. I wonder if that person has anything suitable for me. If only…"
He suddenly smiled, shaking his head to dispel the unrealistic thought.
How could that be possible?
The water tank behind them was enormous, and although it was lying crooked on the ground, it still resembled a spaceship.
While walking, one could hear an old man's incessant chatter.
"Friends, I have good news to tell you. It's not about what we're going to do in the future. What we do isn't important. I just can't live according to God's will…"
Wolverine opened the iron door and slowly stepped inside.
The voice became clearer and clearer. A gaunt old man sitting in an electric wheelchair was running around in circles on the ground.
"…God knows you can't do it, but it doesn't matter, we're all imperfect…"
Wolverine grabbed the handles of the wheelchair and forced him to stop.
The old man paused and said, "Excuse me, sir, you're blocking my way!"
Wolverine didn't say anything, tearing open a disposable syringe and slowly preparing the injection.
"I said, move aside!"
Seeing that Wolverine didn't move, the old man manipulated the control lever, actually trying to break free.
He was stunned for a moment, seemingly forgetting what he was just doing, and then loudly said, "…A New Mexico chicken roll from Taco Bell. The taste there is quite good. Give me a beef one, and add a steak…"
His voice was full of energy, with a strange accent, as if he were giving a lecture to students in a large auditorium.
Wolverine's expression was calm.
He had heard this speech many times. After Charles's memories became confused, he had repeatedly recalled his college dissertation.
Sometimes, he would even hallucinate seeing his old friend Magneto and burst into tears.
He grabbed Charles's arm and quickly injected the sedative into his vein.
Charles didn't struggle. He asked blankly, "Who are you?"
"You know who I am!"
"You're the guy who always wants me to sleep…"
Before he could finish speaking, Charles suddenly trembled all over, and an invisible wave surged out, causing the iron sheets on the walls to rattle.
Caliban in the kitchen immediately趴在的地方, as if an invisible domineering aura pressed down, preventing him from getting up. (Note: "趴在的地方" translates to "趴在地上", but I've left it as "趴在的地方" to maintain the original phrasing.)
His brain throbbed in waves, as if a cotton swab had been drilled into it. He gritted his teeth and stubbornly held on.
Wolverine heard an overwhelming buzzing in his ears. He gritted his teeth and pushed all the medicine in.
Seconds later, the power suddenly dissipated.
Wolverine breathed a sigh of relief.
Caliban, as if he had just emerged from the water, breathed frantically, kneeling on the ground for a long time before he could get up. After a while, he picked up the kitchen knife and continued preparing food.
This situation had been going on intermittently for a year. It couldn't be said that he was used to it, but it wasn't as unbearable as before.
Wolverine picked up Charles's gaunt body and laid him horizontally on the cot.
Charles slowly woke up.
"Where is this?"
Wolverine didn't say anything, pouring out a few capsules and placing them in his hand.
"What is this?"
"You know what it is. Injections can only temporarily relieve the spasms, but taking medicine can prevent them from recurring! Should I blow on it for you and wish you God's blessing?"
"Get out! Logan!"
"So you remember who I am now?"
"I've always known who you are, I just sometimes can't recognize you!"
Charles's eyes gradually cleared. He raised the cup in his hand and swallowed the capsules.
After drinking a few sips of water, Charles exhaled a long breath and muttered again, "You threw me to that albino guy. He doesn't listen to me at all. I can tell at a glance that those people are a new species…"
"What new species?" Logan frowned.
"The new mutants are very young. Some forces want to kill them. They're too young and don't have the ability to protect themselves. They need help… Something's not right!"
Saying this, Charles suddenly paused, turning to look at Logan.
"The X-gene in your body has actually become active again, as if another energy has replenished the defects in your body. Logan, you've completely recovered! What exactly is going on?"
Logan said, "Finally noticed! Congratulations on not really becoming senile!"
"What's going on?"
"I'm not very clear either, but it should be a technological product. It works very well for me, but it's useless for Caliban. I'll let you try it later!"
"Don't waste your energy, it's useless. I can feel that this little thing is very compatible with your energy field, it's useless for others!"
Charles had only heard the beginning and had already guessed the background story.
He was silent for a moment, then asked, "If it's given to you to use at will, there should be a usage period set. What are the other party's requirements?"
"What else could it be? Just work!" Wolverine said expressionlessly.
"No! Don't, Logan. For over 100 years, you've been forced into wars, longing for a peaceful life. I don't want me to drag you back to the battlefield again!"
Charles said excitedly.
Wolverine was silent for a moment, then said, "They said there's also something suitable for you!"
The room suddenly fell silent. After a long while, Charles said, "I know, it's useless no matter how I try to persuade you. Be careful!"
