Astral Cockroach

#15 - drought

The summer forest was noisy and bustling, with insects and birds chirping day and night.

Amidst the noise, Banbu was silently busy.

Before dawn, he needed to go out to hunt, flying to and fro among the grass leaves, collecting dew, and watering the Xun grass life seed.

At noon, he would go out to hunt, and then, taking advantage of the scorching sun, collect and transport white jade mulberries and reflecting-sun fruits, dropping them at the entrance of the big-headed harvesting ants' nest.

The scale of the ant nest was rapidly expanding, probably exceeding ten thousand. Their digestive ability was super strong, they weren't picky eaters at all, and they didn't mind having too much. They would gnaw on the pulp and collect the seeds.

Every morning, Banbu would carefully inspect the seeds they were drying, until the mulberries and reflecting-sun fruits were completely ripe and had fallen to the ground.

Banbu spent several days searching through the rotting pulp, but the final result was not to his liking.

The probability of a primal force seed being born in nature was too low. Harvesting a Xun grass primal seed was entirely a matter of luck, and he did not find the hoped-for white jade mulberry or reflecting-sun fruit primal seed.

The big-headed harvesting ants also discovered the existence of mulberry trees and diligently transported the seeds. They had hoarded an inexhaustible supply of food this year.

A very interesting thing then happened: after a rainstorm, the ant colony began to migrate to the nearest Chinese pistache tree.

At first, Banbu thought they were frightened by the aura he released and chose to move, but later observation revealed that ants were entering and leaving both nests.

It turned out they weren't moving, but splitting the family, or rather, splitting the nest.

In some ant species, after the nuptial flight, the queen ant chooses to join forces to open up an empire in order to increase the chances of survival, quickly getting through the weak period.

When the ant empire grows to a certain size, it must suppress the continued expansion of the tribe. Depending on the food situation, two different results occur: if food is insufficient, the strong queen will instigate the worker ants to kill the weaker queens, seizing power, which is called "queen selection"; if food is abundant, the weaker queens will wisely choose to leave, taking a group of worker ants, a small number of pupae, and some food, to find a new location to open their own empire, which is "nest splitting."

Banbu was full of curiosity about this, but he was not optimistic about the branch that split off, because there was no rain for nearly ten days, and they were probably encountering a drought, or a fixed dry season climate.

Continuous exposure to the scorching sun caused the soil to crack, the water vapor in the air disappeared, the sky was cloudless, the air was dry, and the dew that condensed on the grass leaves at night decreased day by day, eventually disappearing.

The stream stopped flowing, and Banbu had to travel to a distant pool to fetch water and irrigate the Xun grass life seed, maintaining its vigorous growth.

The ordinary Xun grass managed by the big-headed harvesting ants was not so lucky. Due to drought and water shortage, the grass leaves slowly turned yellow, and the new shoots stopped growing. The vitality of this grass was also tenacious, entering a state of semi-dormancy, half-dead but not dying.

At this critical juncture, the second batch of sword-horned grasshopper nymphs hatched out of season. They devoured the already stunted young leaves of the Xun grass with an almost frantic posture.

The big-headed harvesting ants were helpless.

Banbu desperately hunted them, very lavishly eating only the two fattest hind leg muscles of each sword-horned grasshopper, and burying the rest under the Xun grass life seed, or throwing it to the ant neighbors.

With the Xun grass field destroyed, these poor little ants would probably not harvest a few Xun grass seeds this autumn, and it was unknown whether they could survive the long winter.

Banbu peeled and dried the leftover sword-horned grasshopper leg meat and stored it in the dry room opened inside the black boulder.

Time flowed, and after a month, signs of molting and growth reappeared on Banbu's body, and he became easily tired and sleepy.

In this terrible dry season, if not irrigated, the Xun grass life seed that had not yet grown into a mature plant might be scorched to death.

And the hateful sword-horned grasshoppers, if not hunted in time, would devour the Xun grass life seed completely.

Banbu dared not fall asleep. Even if he had to rest for a while after hard work to recover his energy, he dared not sleep too deeply. He lay趴 on the entrance of the cave, intermittently waking up to check the surrounding situation, kill the sword-horned grasshoppers who dared to covet the Xun grass life seed, and release angry pheromones to form a deterrent aura.

Banbu firmly believed that if he survived the dry season and starved those hungry sword-horned grasshopper nymphs to death, the situation should improve.

Sleepiness was like a curse, constantly brewing and thickening. Banbu used his soul will to stubbornly resist the laws of his body's growth.

A difficult battle lasted for about ten days.

It had not rained for 20 consecutive days.

It could be determined that it was not a dry season, but a drought.

In the forest, the tops of many lush and tall trees began to turn yellow, the green grass on both sides of the stream withered, and the pool dried up.

The number of sword-horned locust nymphs decreased sharply. They either starved to death or fled elsewhere.

Every day, many ant corpses were carried out of the two ant nests and piled up together, slowly forming two small hills.

The little flower snake that had settled nearby was nowhere to be found. It may have been roasted to death, or it may have gone elsewhere to avoid the disaster.

Banbu regretted a little, regretting that he had rashly sown the Xun grass life seed. Now that he couldn't find a water source to irrigate it, the mature leaves of the Xun grass life seed also began to turn yellow, in a semi-withered state, and the young leaves stopped growing.

If the drought continued, it would definitely not survive.

Banbu could do nothing but laboriously move a large number of branches to build a simple shed to block the scorching sun. Whether he could survive depended on fate.

Banbu couldn't hold on any longer, so he crawled into the depths of the nest and fell asleep.

In his sleep, a large amount of inheritance information about the God-given Seed awakened, imprinted in his soul memory:

"The life seed nurtured by the God-given Seed is very different from the life seed nurtured by ordinary seeds. Growth requires absorbing a lot of primal force, so you must choose a place with abundant primal force to sow. The best way is to bury primal stones underground, which can help it grow vigorously…"

"Elementary warriors must not choose the God-given Seed as their life seed, because the evolutionary sleep is a critical time for their own growth, and also a critical time for nurturing the life seed. The God-given Seed will consume a lot of primal force, delay the time, and elementary warriors are physically weak and will be dragged down to death…"

… …

"Why didn't these important life-saving knowledge awaken earlier?"

"This is特么的is locking the stable door after the horse is stolen…"

"However, I was not dragged down to death…"

Waking up groggily, his consciousness was a little blurred, and his whole body was weak, even more severe than the first evolutionary transformation.

He circled the boundary line of death again, and luckily survived again.

With his physical strength exhausted, weak and exhausted, the vision in the dark nest was a little blurred.

With the long-lost moist air, Banbu first reacted, during his sleep, the drought had passed.

Eating a few leaves that lined the nest and resting for a while, he slightly recovered his physical strength, climbed up, and crawled into the dry storage room.

Very good, having had two failures, the third time was considered a success. The storage room opened inside the black boulder was not affected by the humidity, and the dried meat was well preserved.

He devoured most of his savings in one breath, gaining nutritional supplements, his somatic cells rapidly divided and grew, his physical strength gradually recovered, and his dim carapace glowed with a metallic luster.

Examining himself, L3 elementary warrior, body length 22, the shape of his body had undergone another slight change, gradually transforming into the form most suitable for combat in his mind.

Opening his mouth, he spat out a purple-golden seed, emitting a faint purple halo in the darkness. This was the God-given Seed that had just been nurtured, the second life seed.

Banbu specially opened a small hole deeper in the dry room, specifically for storing this special seed, which could be called a rare treasure.
