Chapter 31: The Administrator of the Holy Treasury (Part 1)

"Ah, Crassus, you must be so happy to hear that I was captured!" - Caesar shouted when he was captured by pirates while traveling to Asia when he was young

The Holy Treasury is in the garden on the side of the temple - on the other side is the House of Virgins with fifty rooms, a dormitory, two fountains, two reservoirs, magnificent statues, a public dining hall on the ground floor, and a garden for walking and studying. These virgins are really rich. Carapis dripped the key and walked into the Holy Treasury. In fact, it was a secluded circular pavilion with an empty space in the middle, full of flowers and plants, with a roof to block the sun and wind and rain. There were rows of rooms all around, three floors, no less than twenty, and each room was very small, with a bed occupying half of the space. The other half was full of warehouses, all locked, and filled with labeled treasures offered to the gods by Roman citizens. There was also a warehouse full of cabinets, which were said to contain the wills made by the dignitaries during their lifetime. When the dignitaries died, the virgins took them out personally and read them in front of their families to show authority and justice.

Here, Carapis sincerely felt the majesty and elegance of God. He felt that his whole soul was purified and sublimated.

Carapis's job was to take the key every day, check the holy vessels, tributes, and will cabinets one by one, and then mark them on the parchment list. After sending them to the temple, he could return to his duty room - a table, a couch, a small bookshelf, and rest in a daze.

It seems that the biggest feature of this job is that it is idle, so idle that it can't be any more idle. Although the virgins over there are his colleagues, he can't set foot in the virgin's house at all, unless he is not afraid of being stoned to death by Roman citizens. There was no communication with colleagues, and no creative labor. It was so suffocating. No wonder his predecessor quit and went out to be a tax farmer to adventure in the East.

This is what Karabis thought, but he didn't think for long before he saw a man in a knight's cloak rushing in. "This is the Holy Treasury..." Karabis stood up and was about to stop him. The man hurriedly threw down ten silver dinars and said, "Okay, hurry up, give me the key to one of the rooms."

"Hey?" Karabis was full of doubts. Seeing Karabis like this, the man got angry and shouted why the guy left before and replaced him with a new duck! Then he threw out five more dinars. Karabis thought that he would just not let him touch the warehouse over there, so he took fifteen dinars and gave him the key to a small room.

The knight took the key and went there impatiently. After a while, a veiled and well-dressed woman hurried in and asked Carapis softly if there was a knight with a wreath in just now and where the room he bought was. Carapis pointed without asking anything. The woman lowered her head and hurried into the room.

Then, Carapis clearly heard the fierce "oh, oh, ah oh" sounds coming from the room. He trembled slightly with the key chain in his hand - "This is what Luculas and Claudia said, this is the benefit of the sacristan?!"

Before the couple finished, another fat man and woman came in and threw Carapis thirty drachmas. They were rich and said they would arrange a spacious room for us - Carapis smiled and handed the other party a key that was one foot long, the largest room.

After a while, two men actually came in! I also asked Carapis for the key...

At dusk, Carapis widened his eyes, fell on the couch in his room, swallowed a mouthful of saliva, and recalled his gains as the administrator of the Holy Treasury today. He rented out six rooms and earned 142 silver coins. In fact, it should have been 150. A guy mixed eight copper coins in it and pretended to be one. He failed to recognize it.

The implication is that he gets three or four thousand drachmas a month, which is not a big problem at all...

What a concept, no wonder Luculus recommended him to take up this position, this is really a great favor! Fortunately, his brother Marcus likes me. Roman nobles and citizens like to rent the holy treasury room in the temple when they have an affair. I think so too. This place is secluded and secret, and it is the best place to do this. Unexpectedly, on one side is the spotless Holy Fire Virgin, and on the other side is the dirty Holy Treasury. Is this the city of Rome, a world where two poles coexist?

Also, no wonder the ex quit his job and became a tax farmer. If he stays here for three to five years, he can make 100,000 drachmas. That's why the idiot will continue to stay here.

So that's what happened. The Roman nobles are the main consumers of this city. Their decadent and wasteful life brings us free people so many opportunities and profits! Whether they are raising pet fish or having a tryst in the Holy Treasury, they are just spending money lavishly.

In the apartment at night, Carabis woke up with laughter several times, which made Potti pinch his nose and ask him what he was laughing at. "Poti, starting tomorrow, you will be responsible for buying some things for me." Carabis did not answer, but just asked.

A market day later, Carapis calmly sat behind the desk in the duty room. On the wall behind him hung a map of the rooms in the Holy Treasury made of poplar wood boards, and rows of corresponding keys were hung below. A pair of lovers looked around and slowly walked in, leaving seven or eight drachmas. Carapis took a look and thought it was so little, so he handed them a key, and then painted a small pennant in the smallest room on the floor plan with chalk. Then another couple came and threw twenty drachmas. Carapis immediately painted a pennant in the huge room "transformed" from the warehouse on the floor plan, and smiled and watched them leave.

A nobleman and a beautiful boy came. After handing over the key, Carapis whispered: "Do you want a lubricating plaster?"

The nobleman stayed for a while and said he needed it.

"One bottle, plus two drachmas." Carapis took a bottle from the cabinet and handed it to the other party. This thing was only one setis when Boti bought it.

A young and beautiful couple dressed in aristocratic clothes came. Carapis whispered, "Do you want a few mutton-fat candles? The light makes you look like Cupid." The young couple must have come to taste the sweet forbidden fruit before getting married, so they nodded shyly, "Two sesquis each, discount for six or more, ten sesquis together. Add some olive oil?" Carapis skillfully took these things out of the cabinet. When Boti bought them, each one was only one as.

A young and beautiful couple dressed in aristocratic clothes came. Carapis looked at them for a while and whispered, "Do you want a small double-headed Priapus, made of leather, with embossed ribs, you can fill it with warm water, the rental price is two drachmas for the whole day."

"Hey, you guy, this is a copper coin, take it back! Get out of here, don't let me see you two here again, or I'll let you taste my fist."
