Vol 2 Chapter 1270: Tokyo Bay Incident
The Tonkin Gulf patrol program was seen as worthless by some, most of the South Vietnamese agents sent to North Vietnam were either captured or killed, and attacks at sea were innocuous.
It's a waste of fuel for the U.S. Navy to protect such a group of South Vietnamese agents, but soon the Pentagon will prove that the patrol program is useful, but not necessarily to everyone's liking.
Several South Vietnamese patrol boats attacked two North Vietnamese islands in Tonkin Bay, where activities are believed to support infiltration to the south. Early the next morning, the USS Maddox, a USS Maddox, on a patrol of DeSoto, arrived in Tokyo Bay a long way from the two islands.
At 3:40 p.m. Maddox reported that several fast gunboats were approaching, and a few minutes later the ship was attacked by torpedoes and automatic weapons. There were no casualties aboard the Maddox, and no damage was sustained.
There was no doubt that the Maddox had been attacked: the crew removed shrapnel from North Vietnamese shells from the deck and sent the shrapnel to the Pentagon to confirm that the attack had occurred.
Compared with the USS Maine half a century ago, the United States today is no different, in every way, and there is no need to sacrifice a battleship to achieve its goals.
At the time of the incident, the Maddox was moored on the high seas, more than twenty-five miles from the coast of North Vietnam, and an attack on the world's largest navy by North Vietnam, which had only theoretical sea power, was intolerable. The whole of the United States is boiling, and the US Navy warships are attacked on the high seas, which is a provocation to the dignity of the United States.
South Vietnamese ambassador Maxwell Taylor objected to the decision to downplay the incident. In a late-night cable to the State Department, he noted that if we did not respond to unprovoked attacks on American destroyers on the high seas, it would be seen as "a sign of America's fear of direct confrontation with the North Vietnamese."
The public opinion in the whole world is boiling, and the UK is still boiling ahead of the United States. The major newspapers in the UK are extremely shocked, and the headlines are all sensational, expressing the reporting concept that I don’t understand but I am shocked.
The Secretary General of the Cabinet, who was in a good mood, completed the day's work with great energy and went home anxiously to express his loyalty to the female president.
"So good today." Pamela Mountbatten saw her husband come in, took the remote control to turn off the TV, and floated towards her husband.
"When did I go wrong?" Ellen Wilson hugged his wife's body and said in a tone that no one was more loyal to his wife than him. "A good relationship with the media will help you and my career."
"Do you think a destroyer has no wounded and is worthy of causing a large-scale war?" Pamela Mountbatten operates according to her husband's words, which does not mean that she agrees with the man's point of view.
"It's for whom. Not necessarily for the United States. Aren't they world hegemons?" Alan Wilson held his wife's hand and sat down together, and said overjoyedly, "Americans have something to do, and they are not good for the big world, including the United Kingdom. For most countries, that's a good thing."
"Then what are you going to do?" Pamela Mountbatten asked with a frown. The distance between South Vietnam and Malaya was very close. She really didn't want the situation in her husband's mouth to develop like this.
Gu Yu
"Of course it is a call for peace. We need to emphasize the importance of Europe and persuade the United States not to start the war lightly." Alan Wilson said in a pacifist tone, "Isn't it the majesty of world hegemony, in fact, it only needs the bottom line Flexible enough, it's not particularly important either."
The more you don’t want to do something, the more you have to keep emphasizing that you need to do it. It’s a very basic truth. Is the British persuasion useful? That is of course useless. The United Kingdom also persuaded the Korean War at the beginning, but the United States still entered the Korean Peninsula without hesitation. My Daying’s efforts to maintain peace at this time are infinitely equivalent to the effect of Huntuo Great Sage.
The Tokyo Bay incident seems to be a little earlier. I don't know if it will affect the US aircraft carrier being bombed and sunk by North Vietnam. It would be a pity if it was affected. After all, it is the only aircraft carrier that was sunk after the war. Alan Wilson still hopes that this crown can be obtained by the hard-working and brave Vietnamese people.
Armstrong, the British ambassador to the United States, was doing everything he could to save the peace, following the instructions at home, and approaching the United States Secretary of State Dean Rusk to explain the British view on the matter. Britain's official attitude, as in the Korean War, was that North Vietnam was not worth fighting for.
"Respected Secretary of State, war is terrible after all. Britain is worried about the development of the situation." Armstrong expressed Britain's worries without concealment.
"Mr. Ambassador, I also understand you and the UK's concerns about this matter very much, but I can't promise anything." Dean Rusk is a very close person, and he took time to receive the British ambassador at this time, but this Being close to the people can't change anything, it's too late to say anything now.
"The U.S. warship was not damaged, not even a single wounded person. In fact, it can be regarded as a misfire." Armstrong is still fulfilling his mission. Never happened.
This means that even if the attack is real, the United States has nothing to lose. This kind of view is very difficult to stand and talk. Now even American public opinion knows that American warships were attacked on the high seas.
How could Dean Rusk pretend that nothing happened? This year is an election year, and now is the time for bipartisan elections. If the United States does not say a word, the Republicans will seize the opportunity to make a fuss. Don't talk about the United States, now even the British know about it, the United States has become a small matter?
The Pentagon claimed that the Maddox cabled that an attack from some unidentified ships appeared to be imminent. Maddox's intelligence came from a highly classified NSA report ~www.wuxiaspot.com~ which intercepted various North Vietnamese orders. An hour later, the Maddox telegraphed that it had established radar contact with three unidentified ships.
Dark clouds and storms made the night darker and visibility was extremely poor. In the hours since, Tokyo Bay has been in chaos.
The Maddox and Turner Joy reported encountering more than two dozen torpedoes, seeing the wake of the torpedoes, lights in the rear compartment of the enemy ship, flashlights and automatic weapons firing, and Radar and sonar waves were received.
At this time, the Pentagon was actively discussing how to give a head-on attack to North Vietnam, who despised the majesty of the United States. Armstrong said goodbye to Dean Rusk in disappointment, and returned to the embassy to tell London that the belligerence of the Americans made persuasion full of thorns.
"That's such a pity." Alan Wilson tilted his head and held the microphone in the cabinet secretary's office, happily, "We still can't give up our efforts to save the peace, Dixon, until I express my condolences and thanks to Ambassador Armstrong, he has already Did everything that could be done.”
Putting down the microphone, Alan Wilson stood up and walked around the desk, lit a cigar and took a long sip.
