Chapter 40: Competing

In the first game, Burnley defeated Norwich 3-0, and then Burnley had to play a first-round game in the League Cup.

This time, Burnley was quite lucky. The team they drew was Mansfield from the English League C. This is a weak team even in the English League C.

George would not go to great lengths for such a game. He basically played as a substitute, but with a header from Klose, they defeated Mansfield 1-0 and entered the second round of the League Cup.

Then Burnley faced Oxford United, the opponent who was promoted together with Burnley, at home. When they were in the League B, Oxford United had to surrender when they met Burnley. At that time, Burnley had a frontcourt tower like Richard and a striker with outstanding personal ability like Darren Huckabee.

Of course, the most important thing was that there was Bobowski, the sharp knife on the right. No defender at this level of the League B could stop Bobowski.

Therefore, Oxford United would not resist when they saw Burnley.

But after reaching the League A, Oxford United seemed to want to take a point. They gathered a lot of troops in the backcourt and set up a solid formation.

Although the ball was always in Burnley's hands because Ballack and Neil Lennon were guarding the middle. But the ball could only fly around in the frontcourt and could not get into Oxford United's penalty area.

Lampard and Danny Murphy on the left and right sides were not orthodox wingers. Their speed and breakthrough ability were limited, and they could not pose a threat on the wing at all.

Unable to open the wing, Oxford United's defense could not be opened.

"George, although Yongberg is very independent, at times like this, we need a striker like him." Carl Pat stood next to George and frowned. "You see, Frank and Danny Murphy don't have much breakthrough ability at all."

George certainly understood that Burnley now has four central midfielders. Ballack, Lampard, Neil Lennon, and Danny Murphy are all good players in the middle of the midfield, but they can't be the kind of wing strikers.

Burnley's attack has always been right-leaning, but later with the rise of Daniel, the left-wing attack has improved. But last year everyone cooperated with Bobowski, so many people were used to attacking from the wing. Now suddenly the wing is paralyzed, so they don't know how to attack.

This kind of game needs Yongberg the most, of course, and breaking the surface with a point means a good wing player like Yongberg. Although he is only a wing attacker, once the wing is opened, everything will be alive. This is the role of those wingers, but Yongberg was blocked by George himself. Unless Yongberg comes to admit his mistake, George will never let Yongberg enter the first team.

It's already the 58th minute of the second half. Watching the ball flying in the air or passing it in the backcourt, George hardened his heart.

"Steve, Miro, you two come here." George must win this game. At the beginning of the second half, George asked all the players to warm up. This time, Finnan and Klose were called at once.

"Steve, you go up and replace Grant. My task for you is very simple, actively join the attack. Cross from the wing to the penalty area. I know your cross is very good." Grant was originally a defensive full-back. In the second division, George did not need the full-back to press too much. But the full-back's participation in the attack is the general trend in the future, and George needs the support of the full-back in this game.

George patted Steve on the shoulder, then turned to look at Klose. "Miro, you should understand your task without me telling you."

Klose nodded.

Soon George replaced Grant with Finnan and replaced Danny Murphy with Klose. The formation also changed to 4-3-3, with Ballack, Lampard and Neil Lennon controlling the midfield. The two full-backs Daniel Morrison and Steve Finnan took turns to attack from the wing.

George's dispatch became very simple, directly crossing from the wing, and then Richard and Klose competed for the header. At the same time, Kevin Phillips and Lampard competed for the second landing point. George was almost desperate, and one side must be defeated in this game.

Once the formation was changed, there was suddenly a panic in front of Oxford United. In particular, Richard and Klose were both excellent header players, and every cross could form an attack. Simplicity has its advantages. The previous style of play of English teams was simple and practical. Although George came from the later generations. But George has been educated in England since he was seventeen years old, and has been deeply influenced by English football. Playing this simple style of play is also easy.

After Oxford United defended for a full 82 minutes, Kevin Phillips received Klose's header and scored a goal. In the end, Burnley defeated Oxford United at home with difficulty, 1-0.

In the third game, Burnley welcomed Oldham at home. Oldham's strength is far better than Oxford United. On the basis of defense, the counterattack is also quite sharp. George wanted to burn his boats when he couldn't open the situation, but he was afraid of Oldham's counterattack, so he didn't dare to go too far. In the end, they could only accept a 0-0 draw.

In the fourth game, Burnley played away against Crystal Palace. Crystal Palace is a strong team in the English Premier League with extraordinary strength. George asked the team to retreat slightly to stabilize the situation first. But when preparing to counterattack, he found that Burnley was very short of speed players.

In the end, George chose the old way and played the most traditional high-altitude attack in England. However, he still didn't score a goal in the end, and could only accept the result of 0-0.

In four games, Burnley won two and drew two, with eight points and ranked third in the English League One. This is a very good score for Burnley, who has just been promoted to the English League One. But George was very dissatisfied, because Burnley's offense in the second division is still relatively good. Now this style of play is not what George needs most.

At this time, George regretted letting Darren Huckabee go. Now Burnley's frontcourt lacks this kind of speed player.

…………

《Fierce conflict broke out in Burnley! 》

"Frederik Ljungberg, the new star introduced by Burnley from the Swedish Super League this season, performed well in the first game. He scored a goal in his first appearance for the team, but after being replaced by George in the second half, according to internal sources, he had a fierce conflict with George."

"George completely put Ljungberg into the cold palace. In the next month, Ljungberg has been training with the youth team."

"It is normal for Ljungberg to have some personality as a young player. I think Coach George is too sensitive. For such a talented player, the coach should protect him well."

"Of course, Coach George, as a young coach under 30 years old, has achieved excellent results now. I think everyone should understand that he is not good at adjusting players and controlling the atmosphere in the locker room."

George looked at the Blackburn Evening News and threw it hard on the ground. What does "everyone can understand" mean? It seems to be understood, but it is just adding fuel to the fire.

George didn't even need to look at the name of the reporter of this newspaper to know who wrote it. No one else would write this except Steven Yellen, George's biggest rival.

George is also having a headache now, this Ljungberg has too strong a personality. It's been a month, and this kid would rather stay in the youth team than come to apologize.

However, the team George wants to build is a team that focuses on the whole, and no one is allowed to override the team.

In the fifth round, Burnley challenged the fifth opponent of the English League One away, a professional football team from Reading, Berkshire, southeast England. Reading's history is completely blank. Although it has a history of more than 100 years, Reading can only be mixed in low-level leagues in these 100 years.

In this game, George made a big change to the starting lineup, withdrawing Lampard, Danny Murphy and Grant. And replaced them with David Ward, Steve Finnan and Solkamp.

In this game, George pushed Daniel up and became a left winger. Steve Finnan was the right back, and Solkamp became the right winger. David Ward replaced Daniel as the left back.

Daniel's position change caught Reading off guard. Under Ballack's outstanding dispatch, Daniel scored two goals in this game. The forward line was also completely alive, with Richard and Kevin Phillips scoring one goal each.

In the end, Burnley defeated Reading 4-0 away from home.
