Colonial Suit

#1094 - Freedom from bondage

Deep into the night, in Saros's bedchamber.

Beneath the undulating palace ceiling, Saros sat silently at the head of his bed. At his feet lay a jumble of soft, female bodies. He had clearly just finished a process of replenishing his 'nutrients,' clad only in a smooth, supple dressing gown, while the 'nutrient fluid' he had used slept forever.

Saros was not a benevolent man; beneath his elegant and flawless face lurked the most ruthless heart of the Sersha clan.

What is life?

Saros gazed silently at a girl's face, and closed his eyes.

A consumable.

In the darkness, he picked up a ball of light from beside him and held it in his palm—it was the Holy Light Helix that Yassu had just given him. Although the agreement between the Sersha and the space pirates stipulated that one Holy Light Helix had already been sent to the Sersha's main star, the one in his hand was different.

Saros didn't know how the space pirates had obtained two Holy Light Helixes, but he had no interest in that. He only cared about himself. Few people knew the significance of the Holy Light Helix to Saros, not even his modulator, the great Sage Sabos.

However…

Saros gazed at the swirling astral vortex in his hand, a cold glint flashing in his eyes.

Now, no one can restrain me anymore.

The bedchamber was quiet. Saros slowly raised his pale left hand and thrust it into his chest. Blood flowed between his fingers as he dragged his hand downwards, tearing open his chest in one swift motion, revealing the scarlet tendons, bones, and internal organs beneath…

If someone were watching from the side at this moment, they would realize that Saros could no longer be considered 'human.' His internal structure was completely different from that of a normal person. Besides his denser bones, his internal organs were also very strange. He had fewer digestive organs and more 'nodules' the size of apricot pits. These were the 'biological energy pools' that the Sersha clan had modulated for him, possessing both digestive and energy circulation functions. The energy of each 'nodule' was greater than that of humanity's most advanced nuclear reactor.

But that wasn't important. What was important was that in the area of Saros's heart was an eerie cavity. Dense black mist swirled within, as if a demon dwelled inside.

Saros's expression was calm, as if he didn't feel the pain of tearing his flesh at all. He simply stared silently… his pupils filled with a trace of indifference, a trace of cruelty.

This was the source of his power, the reason he was the Sersha's genius, different from everyone else.

A shard of the Abyss.

At the end of the Great Chaos War, after Krodir was destroyed, the Sersha clan discovered this thing in a ruin. Initial assessments indicated that it was the residence of a great Sage of Krodir. For some unknown reason, they hadn't taken this shard of the Abyss with them. The Sersha clan was ecstatic when they obtained this shard, immediately hiding it and beginning a long period of research and utilization.

For a full millennia, this shard accompanied generations of Sersha Sages, undergoing countless experiments and modulations. But the results were despairing. With the Sersha clan's technology, it was almost impossible to penetrate it, let alone utilize and study it.

However, three thousand years ago, a Sersha Sage accidentally discovered that the shard of the Abyss was weakening. Perhaps due to hunger, it began to absorb the energy provided by the Sersha clan. From then on, the Sersha clan had an entry point, which was 'food.' The Sersha clan prepared a lot of energy for the shard of the Abyss, and finally discovered that only their own biological energy best met the requirements. The shard of the Abyss was like a hungry demon, devouring large amounts of flesh and souls. And the Sersha clan's research on it also made progress, finally developing to the stage of modulating a carrier.

Then came another series of cruel experiments.

And Saros was test subject number 177217.

Also the only one who could withstand the shard without immediately collapsing.

Saros didn't remember who his parents were; he only knew that he was a fertilized egg on the Sersha production line, nothing special among countless modulation nests. But after he received the shard of the Abyss, he instantly became the Sersha clan's most dazzling star. His physical strength, perception, mental strength, and even soul strength rapidly increased, quickly surpassing his peers. (The Sersha clan did not like normal reproduction; their breeding method was similar to artificial insemination. Mating was only a means of venting and replenishing energy.)

The direct consequence of this was that Saros became a superior being, instantly obtaining everything he wanted.

Power, resources, women. Slaughter. As long as it was what he wanted, the Sersha clan would satisfy him. No matter how unreasonable his demands, he would not be refused. At first, Saros thought he was lucky, but later he gradually realized that he was still in an experiment; the Sersha clan was trying to discover the secrets of the shard of the Abyss from him.

But unfortunately, they could never do it.

The shard of the Abyss had merged with Saros into one long ago, and could no longer be separated. He had become an 'incarnation' of the Abyss.

Of course, compared to Abyss Sons like Blood Eye, Saros could only be considered a defective product, not even a defective product. The Sersha people didn't know that the shard of the Abyss they had obtained was split from Blood Eye's body, and its purpose was to continue research on the Abyss after Blood Eye was modulated. Unfortunately, with the end of the war and the destruction of Krodir, this shard did not fulfill its original function.

This shard was very small, not only did it not have real Abyss power, but even a trace of Abyss consciousness was so blurred that it was almost imperceptible. If it weren't for the fact that it was heading towards annihilation with the passage of time, the Sersha clan's Sages would not have been able to connect with it.

However, even the smallest shard still possessed the essence that distinguished the Abyss from the positive universe, which was the Abyss rules. So Saros became the most important figure in the Sersha clan, mentioned in the same breath as the Boca clan's Xie.

He underwent countless re-modulations, repeating the process more than anyone else in the Sersha clan. Among them, in addition to enhancement and research, half of the modulations were to strengthen control. The Sersha clan only had this one shard, and they couldn't separate it from Saros, so they had to control Saros.

This control created Saros's tragedy.

His dazzling brilliance was always just on the surface; in essence, he was no different from those 'nutrient fluids,' a tool made of carbohydrates. Countless modulations erased his 'humanity' and also fostered his 'hatred.'

He hated his so-called parents, hated the great Sage Sabos, hated the Sersha clan, and even… hated himself.

His perfect body could not bring him any pride, and the treatment of getting whatever he wanted could not bring him any satisfaction.

He longed for destruction…

Longed for death.

But the Sersha clan's control over him made it so he could do nothing; he was like a puppet on a string, only able to act when the clan needed him to. Until… today.

In the dark bedchamber, Saros silently gazed at the Holy Light Helix in his hand, feeling the coldness of blood loss, a cold smile appearing on his face.

In the next moment, he pressed the Helix into his body, into the place where the shard of the Abyss resided.

Intense pain instantly overwhelmed him, he seemed to hear a roar in the dark, a curse.

No one can restrain me.

Even in a nutshell, I will imagine myself as the king of infinite space… (To be continued…)
