Colonial Suit

#61 - People who shouldn't be there

The shuttle vibrated slightly, emitting a buzzing sound similar to an electric current. Its speed rapidly decreased, and it soon entered a cruising state. Through the porthole, Red Eye saw two beams of light appear on either side of the shuttle, forming a very special passage.

“It's a guide beam,” a servant whispered behind Red Eye. Red Eye glanced back and found it was the same guy who had led him.

“What's your name?”

“Jack. Sir, my name is Jack,” the servant replied in a low voice, stealing a glance at Hensel not far away. He said cautiously, “Sir, I am always looking forward to serving you. Can you take me into the spaceport?”

“Can't you enter on your own?” Red Eye asked.

“No, sir. At least, not freely,” Jack replied quietly. “We are service personnel, and if we want to enter the branch's spaceport, we must apply in advance and get permission. But that's not easy. Sir, it would be an exception if you were willing to let me be your attendant. I am very familiar with the spaceport and can be your guide.”

“I see.” Red Eye nodded. It seemed that the mercenary branch had strict personnel management. This was also to be expected, after all, the universe mercenaries were a pure combat organization, and the branch was extremely important. It would be a big problem if someone sneaked in. Seeing that Jack had been serving him diligently, Red Eye decided to give him a chance.

“Alright,” he lightly patted Jack's shoulder. “You can be my attendant for now. During this time.”

“Thank you, sir,” Jack bowed gratefully. In fact, the position of attendant sounded ordinary, but it was of great significance to service personnel like them. Becoming an attendant to a combatant represented a rise in status and could grant many privileges. Free access to the spaceport was just one of them.

The only regret was that this status was temporary. Jack secretly resolved to serve this potential powerhouse, Red Eye, well, and hopefully become his real attendant.

At that moment, Hensel also turned his head “just right,” glanced at the two of them, and then gave Red Eye an ugly smile. “Not bad, you've already got an attendant so quickly. Although it's temporary. It seems many people are optimistic about you.”

“Thank you for your care, sir,” Red Eye replied politely. He knew that Hensel was doing this on purpose. With his hearing, it was impossible that he didn't know what Jack and he had said. But he remained unmoved. This was indulgence. In fact, this shuttle belonged to him personally, and even the service personnel were under his name. Without his consent, who could leave even half a step?

“Alright. You're welcome. Now go to your seat and fasten your seatbelt. We're about to land,” Hensel waved his hand dismissively, then said to Red Eye, “After entering the spaceport, I'll register your information. You'll have to come with me. Then let Jack take you around. I think you need to adapt for a while. And then… you need to take on a few missions to earn some money, and then it's time to organize your own team.”

“My own team?” Red Eye repeated questioningly, while sitting down on the nearby chair and fastening his seatbelt as Hensel instructed.

“Every mercenary has a team. Attendants can have one too. There's a lot of information about wandering warriors in every branch's spaceport. They can't become mercenaries for various reasons, so they rely on this to make a living. You can hire them with star coins. Of course, a temporary team is very cheap, but a permanent team is expensive,” the attendant Jack hurriedly explained. Now was the time for him to perform well.

Hensel looked at him with satisfaction. It was convenient to have a smart attendant, saving him a lot of effort.

A jolt came from under his feet, and the shuttle slowed down even more. Red Eye looked out the porthole and saw a huge steel fortress appear in the vast starry sky. It floated quietly in front of the shuttle, with countless lights flashing. In the thousands of holes on its surface, countless spaceships traveled back and forth like ants.

The mercenary branch's spaceport had finally arrived…

This was the first time Red Eye had seen such a huge artificial creation. Compared to the steel fortress in front of him, Custer's fortress could only be considered a child's toy. It was simply too big, even bigger than a city. The closer he got to it, the more strongly he felt a sense of shock. The shuttle Red Eye was riding wasn't even the size of an ant in front of it. Under the guidance of the guide beams, they quickly approached this behemoth and were sucked in through one of the entrances below it.

As the shuttle entered the tunnel, Red Eye felt a sinking sensation in his body, as if his hands and feet were tied with lead balls, making him extremely uncomfortable.

“The spaceport's artificial gravity is twice the standard. Sir, please be careful, it takes more physical strength to move around here,” the attendant Jack explained in a timely manner.

“Oh?” Red Eye understood and then looked at Jack strangely. “What about you? As service personnel, can you also adapt to this change?”

“We have special anti-gravity equipment,” Jack replied. “It's specially equipped for service personnel, and combat personnel are not allowed to use it. I'm sorry, sir, I can't help you in this regard.”

“There's no need,” Red Eye shook his head and turned his gaze to the outside of the porthole again.

Looking at the huge spaceport, his heart surged. Was this the beginning of a new life? Was the special gravity setting to constantly train the mercenaries' physical fitness? But this method was indeed very effective. He just didn't know if there were special training grounds. Maybe he should also improve his strength, otherwise, in this highly competitive environment, he could easily become a victim.

The shuttle traveled through the tunnel and soon arrived in front of a huge suspended platform. Several special mechanical arms quickly grabbed the shuttle and guided it to the platform.

The gate behind him began to close, and the shuttle's hatch opened immediately afterward.

“Let's go, let's go out,” Hensel took the lead and walked towards the passage, and Red Eye immediately followed. But as soon as they appeared, a man in high-level servant clothing ran over and gave Hensel an extremely respectful salute.

“Lord Hensel, welcome to Spaceport Fifty-Eight. Is there anything I can do for you?”

“I want to go to the branch. Help me maintain the shuttle and replenish supplies,” Hensel expressionlessly flicked something shiny over. The man immediately took it ecstatically and bowed respectfully.

“Yes, sir. Everything will be as you wish.”

“That's a star coin, a circulating currency made of solid energy, which can be circulated in any world. It is extremely valuable,” the attendant Jack said behind Red Eye, his eyes showing envy.

One star coin was enough for that guy to replenish supplies and still make a lot of money. Lord Hensel was really generous.

Next, without waiting for Hensel to greet him, a drop-shaped hovercar drove over and stopped in front of them. Hensel snorted and took Red Eye and others up.

The hovercar had no driver. Only a smart brain was working. As soon as a few people got in the car, it immediately levitated and flew towards another tunnel entrance.

The hovercar was extremely fast and very stable. You could hardly feel any vibration. It was Red Eye's first time riding such a means of transportation, and he was not only a little curious but also excited. The attendant Jack immediately recognized his feelings and didn't bother him.

Most of the hovercar's carriage was transparent, which made it extremely convenient for Red Eye to observe the scenery along the road.

They were traveling at high speed on a metal road, with rows of neat cabins on both sides. There were various patterns and unfamiliar characters on them. It could be seen that these were some kind of functional buildings, but there were hardly any pedestrians.

“We haven't entered the residential area yet, sir. You will see pedestrians when you get to the residential area.” Noticing Red Eye's doubts, the attendant Jack hurriedly said, “The mercenary branch's spaceport is not only a task distribution center but also a market for the exchange of talents and goods. There is a huge influx of foreigners. Here you can buy any weapons and equipment. But the price is high.”

“I see.” Red Eye nodded, feeling a little more confident. “If I want to buy something here, do I need star coins? How can I get them?”

“Yes, sir, all transactions require star coins. But for lower amounts, you can use credit points. Credit points are exchanged for star coins. One star coin can be exchanged for one thousand credit points. As for star coins, you can get them by completing missions. The rewards for universe mercenary missions are very high,” Jack replied, his eyes showing envy.

This was the benefit of being a combatant. The entire spaceport was almost serving them. And in terms of rewards, service personnel worked hard for a month to barely earn a few star coins, which was not even a fraction of what combat personnel earned for one mission. It was really enviable to Jack.

The hovercar quickly arrived at its destination and stopped in front of a giant building. This was the mercenary branch. The most important building in the entire spaceport. There was a large flow of people at the entrance, and Red Eye saw several people wearing mercenary uniforms at a glance. Without exception, these people gave him an extremely dangerous feeling, as if he might be killed as soon as he got close. This feeling made his scalp tingle, and his vigilance was raised to the highest level in an instant.

Hensel seemed to sense this and turned back to look at Red Eye. He said with a smile that was not quite a smile, “Don't be nervous, the mercenary branch prohibits fighting. They won't threaten you. But your reaction is good, making me more and more expectant. Hahahaha…”

Laughing loudly, Hensel got out of the hovercar and walked towards the branch gate, and Red Eye hurriedly followed. But just as the two were about to walk into the gate, Red Eye suddenly widened his eyes, revealing an unbelievable look.

He saw a person, a person who should definitely not be here!

It was a man wrapped in bandages all over his body, like a mummy…
