"This cave has such a large entrance... It looks like our target is quite big." Figo commented, rubbing his chin with a pensive look.
"Let's go. It doesn't matter how large the demon might be; we will finish this in a matter of seconds." The girl walked in without looking back at Figo.
Figo was left speechless before he ran forward, catching up with her. Arriving beside her, he asked curiously. "Hey, don't be so arrogant. I don't want to lose my partners every time I go on a mission."
As the girl heard Figo's frustrated sigh, she finally looked at him. The girl had pale, white skin and hair. Her deep sapphire-like eyes stared into Figos' eyes, making him go into a trance state.
Eventually, Figo woke up and gave a fake cough. "Ahem... is there anything you like to say, Ana?"
The girl was none other than, as everyone guessed, Ana. She turned her head forward and spoke. "Nothing. I just wish you would believe in my skills. Also, don't expect your teammate to always be dying; who knows, this might be your turn?"
"Huh?" Figo became dumbfounded before he spoke to her and began walking with her. "Ana, it seems you are trying to find a way to kill me. Hehehe… I think you forgot who I am.
Figo grinned arrogantly, knowing every newbie would just shut their mouth when they remembered his glory. Unfortunately for him, today wasn't that day.
"I know fully well. You are Figo, codenamed Burning Star. You are the most outstanding genius that the associa- no, humanity have ever gotten. But, unfortunately for you, because you weren't able to accomplish any missions, you can't upgrade your rank. The association doesn't work according to strength, based on merits and skills. So, I can say you have very bad luck. I guess the talent has gone to waste." Ana continued to fire at Figo, tearing up his heart as time passed on.
Figo's face darkened as he finally said helplessly. "Okay, okay, stop. Don't say anymore."
Calming his heart, Figo said to Ana. "Why are you like this, Ana? You know it isn't hard for us, demon hunters, to gather information. So, I know everything about you. Don't tell me your father's death is still haunting you.
Thud
Ana halted in her steps and spoke coldly to Figo. "Do not talk as if you know everything. You will never experience how I felt these past few months."
Figo's face turned stern as he said, seriously. "Ana, I know I will never be able to know how you felt after seeing your father dead. But remember, you are now a demon hunter; throw away your past, or it will lead you to your death. Don't forget, you are only able to join because of Sir Mori's intense request, and I do not want to see him regret it."
"I…umm…" Ana became stumped, not knowing what to say. From Figo's words, she was able to guess that Figo knew Mori very closely; if not, he wouldn't have warned him like this.
Suddenly, Figo's expression returned to normal as he walked forward and said, nonchalantly. "Okay, let's go. Finish this mission fast and have me finally earn some juicy merits."
Ana glanced at Figo's back for a second before following behind him.
As they walked forward quietly, the tunnel became dark, letting them not see anything with their naked eyes. Figo raised his palm and conjured a fireball on top of it, lighting up their surroundings. Continuing forward, they noticed torches ahead of them, hanging on both sides of the walls.
Figo and Ana raised their eyebrows, finding these very odd. Figo stopped Ana from walking forward; instead, he looked around and studied his surroundings. "Man made torches in a cave occupied by demons... Ana, what was the demon's name again?"
"It was the White Mist Spider Demon. Is there anything wrong, Figo?" Ana asked curiously as she also raised her awareness. She didn't know much about demons because her time at the academy was short.
"Wrong? It is more than wrong." Figo looked ahead and squinted his eyes. "White Mist Spider Demons can be considered beasts. They don't have a humanoid figure like most demons do. If they want to take on human form, it is quite impossible in the early stages. Also, they have very low intelligence. So, to make torches just for visibility is impossible to be made by them."
"That means there is a high-ranking bloodline demon residing with the White Mist Spider Demon?" Ana made her guess as to which was the most plausible one.
Figo also agreed with her, as he said by nodding his head. "Most likely. Be careful; the difficulty of this mission has risen drastically."
Nodding her head, Ana followed Figo, who was taking the lead.
As they moved forward slowly, they were able to see the exit. After a minute or so, they finally entered through the exit and were met with a big room. Yes, room, not a rough cave. There were tables full of carapaces of spiders and vials full of unknown fluid. The room was covered with white tiles, brightening the entire place with just small sources of light.
"This.." Ana frowned, looking at everything around her. For some reason, she was having a bad feeling.
Figo, on the other hand, approached a table near him and took a vial in his hand. Taking it closer to his nose, he sniffed softly.
All of a sudden, Figo's eyes widened as red veins began to appear on his eyes. He uttered it with shock. "What a potent potion! It almost brought change to my body for just taking a sniff of smell."
"Figo, what is it?" Ana came closer and looked at the vial in Figo's hand.
Figo squinted his eyes at the vial, then at his surroundings, before saying. "Ana, don't you find it odd as to why we were able to go deep into the tunnel without the help of external light? It was because there was a small opening up on the cave, letting the sunlight pass through. When we were considerably deep enough, the opening ended. Then using the torches to ignite curiosity and pull people further in, let them finally explore this beautifully crafted room."
"Ahh… haven't come across this kind of trap in a while." Figo signed for some reason, making Ana anxious.
"Don't tell me!?" Her eyes widened as she started to realize.
Figo nodded his head before looking at the other entrance to the white room. "Will you come out from there, or are there other secret passages where you are hiding in?"
Clap Clap Clap
All of a sudden, a clapping sound came from the entrance, followed by laughter. The figure spoke with a weak yet hoarse tone. "Oh, will you look at that? I didn't expect to meet a person like you. So, how did you like my humble trap?"
The figure was wearing a black cloak, making it hard to see his appearance. But from his hunched stature, they could guess he was old or had a serious physical issue.
Hearing the man's question, Figo nodded his head in appreciation. "Not bad. Simple but effective. As the saying goes, sometimes simplicity is the best."
On the other hand, Ana sternly looked at the man. From him, she felt an unpleasant aura, much more full of animosity than demons or beasts. 'Weird, demons shouldn't have this much malice. Is he perhaps much stronger than we had estimated?'
"Hehehe… thank you, boy. From the looks of it, you are not someone ordinary. Care to introduce yourself?" The man asked, standing twelve meters apart from Figo.
"Me? Why should I introduce myself to you? You should start telling me about you, betrayer of humans." Figo's face turned serious as he coldly glanced at the man.
"Huh?" Ana was shocked to hear that. "How could he betray humans? Isn't he a demo-"
"No." Figo could understand why Ana wasn't able to see through the man carefully because of her low strength. "He is a human, or you can say demon too."
"You!" Ana looked at the man before her with widened eyes. Not expecting the man before them to be a human.
"Ehhh… it seems I have stumbled upon a big fish." The man's voice died down as he grabbed his hoodie. "Now that it has come down to this, I should truly tell you everything."
As soon as the man got rid of the cloak on his body, they were able to see his entire appearance.
The man's body was hunched, and he was skinny, as bones were sticking out of his skin. However, there were a couple of eyes on his body and arms that were blue with white vertical pupils, just like his very own eyes. He had tattered shorts that had moss on them. His skin tone was grayish.
"My name is Hecluiar Desmond, the future lord of this very land!" Hecluiar shouted before four spider legs spurted out of his back.
Ana and Figo were shocked by Hecluiar's appearance. He didn't look human at all; now one could say he was a demon.
