Chapter 382 Progress of Project No. 10
In the later generations, Shenfei has been working on it for so long and has been promoting it very impressively, but in fact, the J-11 and J-15 still use the original analog fly-by-wire, and have not developed a digital fly-by-wire at all. The important thing is not the hardware, but the flight control rate. Without a thorough understanding of a fighter, it is impossible to achieve a comfortable modification.
And Chengfei has been using its own strength to develop a digital fly-by-wire, which has become a huge progress.
Now, if Xifei can't copy the Tomcat, it can contact Chengfei and solve it together. In short, Muhammad is unwilling to deal with Shenfei.
"Yes, it seems that the burden of Xifei and Chengfei will be heavier." Deng Gong said: "I would like to go to Chengfei immediately to see how our No. 10 project is going."
Chengfei also undertook the country's key projects. When Shenfei was still repairing the J-82, Chengfei had already started to develop the third-generation fighter.
In later generations, this type of fighter still progressed slowly, especially in the case of a serious lack of engines. In the 1990s, after the Su-27 was equipped in China, the AL-31F engine was used to allow the test flight work to proceed. From the establishment of the project in 1984 to the first flight in 2002, this project has been carried out for nearly 20 years! When this fighter was equipped with troops, the fourth-generation aircraft of the United States had also entered the service of the troops. After the J-10 began to serve, Chengfei immediately started the development of the next project.
Now, due to the influence of Pakistan, this fighter has received great attention from the central government.
An exercise conducted by Muhammad in China allowed those senior military officials to see what modern air combat is. The method of relying on long-range air-to-air missiles under the command of early warning aircraft will become the main method in the future. The bayonet in the air is out of date. Equipment has become an important factor in determining the war!
Project No. 10 is of great significance, and now, relying on good relations with the West, Chengfei can obtain some Western equipment and technology to speed up the development of fighters.
Now, it is the third year of the development of Project No. 10.
The main thing that the J-10 lacks in the future is an advanced radar and fire control system, and the other is the engine. Among them, the engine is the most critical. After all, it is the crown of the aviation industry. After so many years of domestic development, there have been multiple models, but none of them have been put into use in the end, which shows the degree of difficulty.
Now, these two problems have been solved. With the independent efforts of Chengfei, there are also AWG-9, APG-66, APG-71, these advanced radars for Chengfei to copy. They have completely broken through the technical barriers and developed advanced planar slot radars. They only need to replace the imported foreign civilian parts with parts designed and manufactured by themselves that meet military standards.
And the other engine project has also been selected, that is, the TF-41 engine. It has stable performance, low fuel consumption, and the maximum afterburner thrust has reached 110 kilonewtons, which can fully drive the project aircraft of Project 10.
The final task left to Chengfei is the development of the fuselage. Since the early J-9 project, Chengfei has been constantly exposed to the canard layout, and has thoroughly mastered the aerodynamics. In addition, it has the full support of the country. The project progressed rapidly.
At that time, it was competing with Shenfei for the project. It took several years, and then it started continuous improvement and research. Chengfei chose the turbojet 15 engine, but until the early 1990s, the turbojet 15 was still in the trial production of components, and the official finalization was far away. Without the engine, the project might be scrapped again. At this time, the Air Force planned to introduce the first batch of Su-27 from Russia. Therefore, General Zhang Aiping, the then Minister of Defense, proposed that since the Su-27 was bought, it would be better to buy more AL31F engines to replace the J-10.
For the progress of the J-10, in 1992, Song Wencong, as the plenipotentiary representative, went to Russia to negotiate the introduction of AL31F. In order to adapt to the J-10, AL31F made several improvements, such as changing the casing accessories to the bottom, etc. The improved model was called AL31FN. From then on, the J-10 had a new heart.
However, in order to adapt to the new AL31FN, the J-10 was almost rebuilt from scratch. The simple non-adjustable elliptical air inlet originally designed could no longer meet the needs. The high-altitude performance of the turbofan engine was far inferior to that of the turbojet, so it was improved to a rectangular adjustable air inlet to ensure flight performance at various altitudes and speeds; because the AL31FN is much longer than the turbojet 15, the rear fuselage needs to be extended, the center of gravity of the whole machine needs to be re-balanced and adjusted, and the chord length of the main wing root is also greatly increased. As a result, the progress of the previous ten years was almost wasted.
Now, the development of the J-10 has not taken any detours. The TF-41 engine has been determined, and the biggest problem has been solved. In addition, Chengfei has accumulated a lot of experience in the J-9 project. After three years of design, all design work has begun to freeze, and the first all-metal prototype has been built.
When Muhammad and Deng Gong entered Chengfei, the first thing they did was to go and see this all-metal prototype.
A prototype is a sample that is made before a fighter jet is officially manufactured in order to reduce certain possible problems, such as assembly. Some of its components may still be under development and will be replaced with wooden blocks. Although it is only a prototype, many problems can be discovered.
Mhammad looked at the prototype in front of him. The mid-range coupling and large canard wings are typical aerodynamic layouts of third-generation and a half fighters. Chengfei has accumulated considerable experience in this regard.
The bubble-shaped cockpit has an integrated windshield in front, air intake on the belly, and a rectangular air intake. At this time, there were no reinforcement ribs. Later, because of these reinforcement ribs, the J-10 was given the title of "stick".
Mhammad was very interested. When he sat in the prototype, he saw the instrument panel in front, which was still dominated by mechanical instruments. The dense instruments made people feel uncomfortable at a glance. Muhammad couldn't help shaking his head.
"Mr. Song, why don't you use a glass cockpit?" Muhammad asked Chief Engineer Song Wencong.
In this era, glass cockpits have not yet become popular. For example, the F-14 is almost all instrumented, while the F-16A equipped by Pakistan has begun to adopt a "one flat and two down" layout due to its later development. The head-up display is small in size, and there is also a video recorder in the middle. There is a large LCD display on the left side for displaying external attachment information, and in the middle is a radar screen, which is still a cathode ray tube. In the middle and right sides of the instrument panel are a large number of traditional instruments. Including speedometer, horizon, angle of attack indicator, level indicator, etc. Although this one level and two down is very different from the display interface of later generations, which is almost entirely large LCD screens, it is already a trend after all.
In later generations, when the J-10 first flew, there was already an LCD display, but that was in 1998 after all, and now, it is only 1986, Chengfei does not dare to be so advanced and use LCD displays to replace traditional instruments.
Hearing Muhammad's question, Song Wencong smiled bitterly and said, "Our current LCD monitors are not very clear under strong light. In combat, once the sun shines into the cockpit, the monitor may fail.
The domestic LCD monitors started not too late. In the early 1980s, there were monochrome TN-LCDs, which were mainly used in medical equipment and computer output devices. However, the performance of this type of monitor was not ideal. It was not until a few years later, after the STN-LCD monitor technology was mastered, that LCD monitors began to gradually become popular.
Muhammad heard Song Wencong's words and immediately understood that this was not the era of LCD monitors as popular in later generations, but he still had a way.
"We in Pakistan are about to produce the latest LCD monitors, which can fully meet the requirements. "Mhammad said.
Toshiba has a lot of good things. In addition to those mechanical equipment, Mhammad also introduced some electronic industries, including this LCD production line.
"That's great. It can make our cockpit more concise. Our fighter is aimed at advanced Western fighters, and human-machine engineering cannot lag behind the West." Song Wencong said.
Chengfei is now full of confidence and is going to produce this kind of fighter.
Mr. Deng also looked at the fighter with great interest. It looks very beautiful. A beautiful fighter is the symbol of an advanced fighter!
After inspecting the prototype, the meeting was also held in a friendly atmosphere in the office.
Song Wencong first reported to Mr. Deng on the development progress of the fighter, including that all the design work has been completed. After the prototype is completed, the initial production of fighters will begin. The first one will be used for static tests, and the second and third ones will be used for test flights.
After listening to Song Wencong's report, Mr. Deng nodded and made several instructions, saying that he must be objective and scientific. Learn to follow the rules, don't make subjective mistakes, etc.
This is the country's top secret. The confidentiality of the J-10 was done very well. Foreign countries didn't know the existence of such a fighter at all, even now, but it is open to Pakistan.
After all, this fighter has developed rapidly with the help of Pakistan. Without Pakistan, there would be no avionics and engine research and development. Without these, the J-10 would take many detours.
Even in the development of the J-10, some Pakistani engineers participated.
"What we are most concerned about is flight control. Project No. 10 uses three-axis four-redundant digital fly-by-wire. Now, how is the development of flight control?" After the report was completed, Muhammad asked. (To be continued ~^~)
