Later, before the September 11 attacks, Massoud was assassinated by al-Qaeda.

An important reason for the Afghan civil war at that time was that there were many factions in Afghanistan, and each guerrilla group fought on its own. Once the Soviets left, they became warlords and fought for their own interests.

Masud's failure to control the situation in Kabul was caused by Masud's own limitations, because Masud is not a Pashtun, the largest population in Afghanistan, but a Tajik! Massoud's body was deeply marked by the Tajik people. Therefore, when guerrillas from all over the country invaded Kabul and overthrew the pro-Soviet regime, they immediately became divided due to their respective ethnic issues.
