Dragon's Origin
#198 - How did he die? (Part 1)
When the head of the Dai family received the news, it was a rare moment of respite in his day, but as soon as he heard it, he disregarded everything else and jumped up from his soft couch, questioning sternly.
"How can it be?" The family head's face was filled with disbelief and anger: "With Wu Ji's seventh-level cultivation and the family's treasure on him, how could a mere assassin harm him? Who is spreading such rumors?"
The sudden outburst startled the messenger, who immediately knelt on the ground. The family head rarely got angry, and when he did, it was a cataclysmic disaster. He didn't want to run headfirst into the family head's rage.
The family head was, after all, the family head. After the initial fury upon hearing the news, he quickly calmed down. None of the family's disciples would dare to spread such rumors in front of him, so if it wasn't a rumor, it must be true.
Dai Wuji was dead! And he died even though Dai Wuji himself and the family head knew someone was coming to assassinate him, and even the surrounding guards knew someone was coming to assassinate him.
"Wu Ji was heavily guarded. How did that barbarian assassin get close?" Suppressing his anger and grief, the family head had the messenger rise and then pressed for details.
"He didn't get close," the guard replied hastily, not daring to be negligent in the slightest.
"How did Wu Ji die?" The guard's answer only added to the family head's confusion, but right now, understanding the situation was more important than assigning blame.
"Elder Wu Ji, Elder Wu Ji was..." The guard hesitated, afraid to answer, but under the family head's gaze, he finally blurted out, "The Elder drowned."
"Nonsense!" The family head roared, "Wu Ji loved playing in the water since he was a child. He could swim back and forth across the ancestral river at the age of four. How could he drown?"
This, the guard couldn't explain. After the explosion at the dock, a group of guards frantically jumped into the river to search. After a good while, some of the better swimmers managed to pull up the bodies of Dai Wuji and the remaining two guards.
Upon inspection, it turned out that Dai Wuji hadn't been killed by some divine artifact exploding his head or chest, but had actually drowned. The large group of guards looked at Dai Wuji's corpse in bewilderment, completely unsure of what had happened.
The guard who had rushed to inform the family head only knew this much and wasn't aware of many of the details that followed. The family head didn't press him too hard, and instead, he quickly led the family's experts to the ancestral home.
Several of the family's best immediately took charge of Dai Wuji's body, and all the guards who had been present at the time were detained and interrogated one by one. As for the family head himself, he stood on the shattered remains of the small dock, looking at everything with anger.
Prior to this, the guards present had already determined the cause of death for the four guards. They had all been killed by steel balls that had been blasted into their bodies. Those guards only had a cultivation of the third level, not enough to withstand the attack of a directional fragmentation mine. Three were blown to pieces, and one had an intact body, but fatal spots had been struck by several steel balls, resulting in instant death.
Even Dai Wuji's body had dozens of steel balls embedded in it. However, Dai Wuji's cultivation was profound, and these steel balls were only lodged in his skin and inner armor, with none of them able to penetrate his skin.
The family head held a steel ball that had been collected in his hand, silent. Behind the family head, an elder and a family forging expert were also examining the steel ball in their hands.
"What do you think?" Although he didn't turn his head, the family head was clearly aware of the forging expert's movements and asked directly.
"Hard to imagine!" The forging expert's words made the family head's heart sink. What was so hard to imagine?
"The steel in these steel balls is extraordinary," the forging expert said, perhaps because he had seen the family head many times and his own status was not low, he had his own demeanor, unlike the ordinary guards who were flustered when they saw the family head. "It cannot be forged without being tempered a thousand times. It's a bit of an overkill to use this kind of steel just to make some beads."
"In addition, the craftsmanship of these beads is even more remarkable," the forging expert continued, "Not only are they perfectly round and smooth, but each one is exactly the same size. I can't imagine how they were made."
Listening to this, the family head pondered, suddenly asking, "Is it possible that it's the craftsmanship of the Linglong Pavilion?"
"If the Linglong Pavilion wanted to make them, I guess they could," the forging expert said without much thought, directly stating his deduction, "To be honest, if it's just this bead, if you let me spend some effort to polish it, I can polish it out, there's no need for a Linglong Pavilion master to do it."
"How long would it take you to polish a bead like this?" The family head frowned. If such a powerful weapon could be mass-produced, it would be a great gain for the family.
"About five days for one," the forging expert replied, neither humble nor exaggerating, "Polishing it to this effect is time-consuming. But for hundreds of them..."
The forging expert didn't finish his sentence, but the family head knew very well what he meant. Spending hundreds or thousands of days just to polish these small beads, and only being able to use them once, was a bit of an overkill and not worth it.
"Moreover, it doesn't necessarily have to be the same size, slightly inferior ones would have the same power. But these beads are so regular, I'm afraid it's not the work of one person," the forging expert's words made the family head understand even more that behind that barbarian, there might be a group of forging masters who were extremely perfectionistic supporting him.

The beads were just beads, and how to hurt people was still a question. What Wang Yi used was something that even the Dai family head, elders, and a forging expert, who prided themselves on their knowledge and experience, had no clue about.
Just as everyone was frowning and guessing what weapon Wang Yi had used, the people examining Dai Wuji's cause of death finally came to a conclusion. It was the same conclusion as before: Dai Wuji had drowned.
"How is that possible?" The family head didn't believe this result at all. How could Dai Wuji, who could swim back and forth across this river at the age of four, drown?
"Elder Wu Ji was poisoned before he died," the expert was indeed an expert, directly checking out things that the guards couldn't check out: "Because of the poisoning, his whole body was paralyzed, and he couldn't save himself when he fell into the water, so he drowned."
"Could it be that he died from poisoning?" The family head still didn't want to accept the result that Dai Wuji had drowned, and asked.
"This is a kind of spider venom called Black Bean Ding. It's very poisonous, but with Elder Wu Ji's cultivation, it would only paralyze him for half an hour at most, and he would be able to force the poison out of his body," one of the group of examiners was an expert in poison and found out the poison: "If he hadn't fallen into the water, Elder Wu Ji wouldn't have died at all."
