Dragon's Origin

#286 - Royal Chance (Part 1)

In the terrified gazes of the remaining imperial bodyguards, the old eunuch led them away from their resting place with haste, heading straight for the exit of the Perpetual Killing Field.

Wang Sheng remained where he was, watching them leave. To be honest, he really didn't want to get involved with the imperial family and their political schemes.

The remaining dozen or so miles were almost entirely smooth, without encountering any more trouble. The six imperial experts quickly left the Perpetual Killing Field and returned to the borders of the capital.

Only when they stepped onto the capital's territory and no longer felt the dangerous aura of the Perpetual Killing Field did the old eunuch finally breathe a sigh of relief. Sweat poured from his head and body all at once. He had been tense the entire way, and only now could he relax.

"Elder Li, how should we report the commander's matter when we return? What should we say? Please instruct us, and we will follow your orders without question," one of the imperial bodyguards cautiously approached Elder Li, adopting a completely subservient posture and seeking his instructions.

Elder Li was covered in sweat, but weren't the imperial bodyguards? They hadn't understood what Wang Sheng was saying about emperors and lords; they had only seen their commander's head instantly removed by Elder Li and presented to Wang Sheng. The terror of that moment had almost overwhelmed them.

"Report the truth when you return, without concealment," Elder Li finally managed to catch his breath and spoke softly, then ordered, "Leave immediately, return to the palace!"

The others dared not delay and hurriedly protected Elder Li, heading straight for the capital. As long as they encountered the imperial guards along the way, they wouldn't have to worry about safety.

"Don't think that Lone Wolf was at anyone's mercy at that time," Elder Li explained to the others to make them understand the danger they had been in, "That idiot Liu Jie really thought that as an imperial commander, he could do whatever he wanted? If you had dared to act rashly, none of you would have survived."

The imperial bodyguards didn't doubt Elder Li's words, but no matter how hard they racked their brains, they couldn't figure out how Wang Sheng, in that situation, surrounded by no fierce beasts or poisonous plants, could have been so dangerous. How could Wang Sheng, a junior in the third realm, have threatened the lives of them, experts in the sixth and seventh realms, plus Elder Li?

"Have you not understood after being in the Perpetual Killing Field for a month?" Elder Li was truly somewhat annoyed. These guys were all simple-minded and well-developed physically. Their loyalty was unquestionable, but their brains were really lacking. "In the Perpetual Killing Field, the most dangerous things are not the beasts, but the insects! Insects! Don't you understand?"

The five experts nodded repeatedly. They certainly knew how terrifying the insects in the Perpetual Killing Field were. Of the four people who died in the Divine Eagle Prison, at least two had died from insect bites. But what did this have to do with Wang Sheng?

"When we were sitting there resting, everyone was surrounded by at least dozens of poisonous insects," Elder Li sighed, shaking his head. What was the point of arguing with a bunch of brutes? He would just tell them directly. "If Liu Jie had dared to make any unusual moves, he would have died on the spot."

Everyone had insects on them at that time? The imperial bodyguards simply couldn't believe their ears. But Elder Li wouldn't lie. The thought that they had been surrounded by dozens of poisonous insects and hadn't even known it made even the most carefree among them break out in a cold sweat.

"Also, after returning, you are all confined to your residences. Forget everything Lone Wolf said afterward," Elder Li's tone suddenly became stern. "It's best to forget it completely, don't remember a single word."

"Yes, Elder Li!" The five experts hurriedly agreed. As imperial bodyguards, even if they didn't always understand things, they knew that some things they shouldn't know must never be known. Even if they knew, they had to pretend not to. Being talkative was shorter than a蜉蝣's life. Elder Li was letting them off lightly by telling them to forget; if they didn't know what was good for them and spoke carelessly, they probably wouldn't live past the next day after opening their mouths.

Soon, the group encountered a team of imperial guards. An imperial bodyguard stepped forward to identify themselves, and the imperial guards hurriedly protected the group, rushing all the way back to the palace.

As soon as they entered the palace, Elder Li hurriedly submitted a request to see the Emperor. The Emperor's personal eunuch took the request inside. The Emperor was currently discussing matters with several ministers. The eunuch carefully approached the Emperor and whispered a few words in his ear. The Emperor, who had been looking worried, suddenly stood up, his face filled with joy. "Quickly, summon him in!"

The meeting was immediately stopped, and the ministers were dismissed. In the ministers' puzzled gazes, an old, decrepit eunuch who looked like he was about to die walked in hastily, his clothes dirty and disheveled. Everyone looked at each other in confusion. What major event had occurred?

Elder Li saw the Emperor near noon, and it wasn't until late at night that he finished reporting on the trip to the Perpetual Killing Field and what had happened along the way. In particular, he recounted the system of emperors enfeoffing lords that he had heard from Wang Sheng, conveying everything he had heard verbatim, without concealing even the fact that he had killed the imperial commander Liu Jie to apologize to Wang Sheng.

"Well done!" After hearing the old eunuch's words, the Emperor praised Elder Li's capable handling of the matter without hesitation. He had been so excited that he was almost trembling when he heard about the emperor enfeoffing lords. It was already a grave mistake not to do everything possible to win over someone like Wang Sheng, yet someone had even thought of killing him. This Liu Jie, he had mistakenly thought he was reliable.

Fortunately, the old eunuch had acted decisively! The things Wang Sheng casually said were simply a great gift from heaven to the imperial family! How many things were still in his head that he hadn't said? If that idiot Liu Jie had been so stupid as to think that people didn't want to know what you had done and insisted on silencing them, the imperial family wouldn't know where to cry!

"Well done!" This was the second time the Emperor had praised Elder Li for killing well. With the concept of emperors and lords flashing in his mind, the Emperor couldn't help but stand up and pace back and forth dozens of times, then suddenly ordered, "Immediately summon several important ministers, and tell them there are important matters to discuss!"

Having finally heard a concept that could elevate the imperial family's status, the Emperor didn't want to wait even a moment longer. Even though it was late at night, he couldn't help but call several important ministers to discuss it. He didn't even bother to check the items that Elder Li and the others had brought back from the Perpetual Killing Field, his mind was only on this one thing.

The palace became unusually lively tonight. The Emperor and several important ministers stayed in the imperial study until dawn, still not satisfied, and even the morning court session was postponed several times. Countless people in the capital were astonished and puzzled.
