Chapter 535 Boltzmann Brain

I am Ronald Cohen, and I would like to use the little time I have left to write this book.

I know there is no hope of escaping from the deep well in this life. May Gaia bless me and someone can read this letter in a thousand years. This is the last hope of mankind!

Forgive my poor handwriting, vulgar language, and the endless chatter of a dying old man.

I know that any electronic document cannot be saved for that long, although I have prepared more information on the computer, including Ramla's space model.

But our ship has already run out of energy, everyone is dead, and only an old man like me is still hanging on. By the time you read this letter, my bones and the Swordfish will be in a state of decay, the computer on the ship can no longer be started, and the hard drive data has long since disappeared.

Only this special paper made of nanomaterials must still be there. Theoretically, this kind of paper can be preserved for more than 100,000 years. In view of the harsh environment of Ramla, I conservatively adjusted this time to 10,000 years.

Of course, the "year" I am talking about is the well-known time unit based on the earth's space-time scale, which may not be applicable here, or may not have any meaning.

Everything here is still.

I could see the stars in the distance—the entire arm of Orion surrounding us—but I knew they were not in the same space as me. All I see is the reflection of the universe in the deep well.

This is a static space-time in the Milky Way, a dead well in the universe.

The well water has no ripples, reflecting the sky like a mirror. Blue algae spread in the water, and mayflies feasted on it. It seems that life is still multiplying, but the well water is not connected to the Milky Way, and it cannot exchange energy and matter with the vast universe that I am familiar with.

According to the second law of thermodynamics, the entropy in an isolated system will continue to increase. This closed deep well will eventually complete heat death in a short period of time, heading towards true death and annihilating like a soap bubble.

And now we have fallen into this well.

The only hope is that when the deep well dies, the energy of space annihilation pushes the Swordfish to the edge of the well, and the string of time and space bounces us back to Ramla. Although this is a very unlikely event. And back in Ramla, before the scorching sun and floods destroyed us, the chances of being found by someone other than Itsa (I pray it was an Earthling) were even slimmer.

Of course, now that you have seen my last words, it proves that this small probability event has already happened. I am very happy.

We are all descendants of Gaia!

You may not believe it, but the mother earth in Greek mythology is really the god who gives birth to life!

But what I want to talk about today is not a myth, but a real cosmic event. This event will make it clear to us where we come from, where we are going, and what is the purpose of our active life.

This involves many things, scientific, theological, philosophical... In view of the name of Gaia, I must mention one more thing about Greek civilization.

Gaia is the mother of the earth in ancient Greek mythology. She created the gods and all things. Except for Kaos, the god of chaos, it can be said that everything was created by Gaia.

But Greek mythology and Greek civilization are not equivalent. Greek civilization was the source of European civilization that flourished for thousands of years. No matter how disconnected it was from ancient civilizations elsewhere, its development was an independent event. Greek mythology, on the other hand, was pieced together from fragmentary stories picked up from the coasts of the Mediterranean and Aegean Seas by wandering bards such as Homer, Hesiod, Pindar, and Byclides. It actually had another source— —Ancient Egyptian, Phoenician, and Sumerian mythology.

Ah, it’s a bit long to talk about this, so I don’t want to elaborate on the relationship between these civilizations and myths. If there are historians or archaeologists among you, you must know better than me, or you may have one at hand. If you have a running computer with Encyclopedia Britannica installed, you can also verify it yourself.

Although the Greeks invented many of the names of their gods, they did not create Chaos, Gaia, and Ouranos. The names of these three gods appear in the myths of many ancient civilizations, just like the great flood in all myths. They tell us that the origin of human civilization is from the same source.

The names of Chaos and Gaia also exist in the Mayan civilization that is far away across the ocean, but few people know about it. I have only seen it in a textual research article on the Mayan pantheon written by the late Mr. Yeager.

These gods were also mentioned by the Itsa people living in Ramla.

Oh, by the way, you should already know what Ramla is, right? If you don’t know, well, let me tell you, this special space you are in now is a collection of multiple wormholes crawling in the Milky Way. Some scientists also call this kind of wormhole "Anthill".

Ramla is connected to many planets. It is not actually completely natural, but created by Gaia using her wisdom.

Still have to go back to Gaia. Gaia must be explained clearly before Ramla can be explained. This is an endless cycle. Oh my god, where do I start?

Please forgive me for speaking confusingly. I am really too old. You know, I am now over ninety years old. All the young officers and soldiers on the ship have died. It is a miracle that I am still alive!

Let’s talk about the Itsa people.

I don’t know if you have ever encountered an Itesan, but if you do, be careful! They eat people, advocate violence and promiscuity, and spread diseases and plagues. This is not only an uncivilized savage race, but also the guardian of the evil Itsa.

In their myths and legends, Gaia became a god hostile to Unab, and Itsa led them to resist Gaia's rule. How absurd is this! Everything was created by Gaia, who is the mother of all things. How can any child want to kill his mother? The one who should resist is Uranus, oh yes, it is called Unab among the Maya and Itsa people.

If you know Greek mythology, you should know that it was Uranus who betrayed Gaia and ruled the gods with cruelty, and finally Cronus overthrew him. Gaia is the eternal mother, Cronus is the real hero! As for the later Zeus, that was a name made up by the Greeks and has nothing to do with this article.

Okay, I'm going to start talking about the true origin of Gaia.

The second law of thermodynamics tells us that the slight increase in entropy in an irreversible thermal process is always greater than zero. As an isolated system, the entropy of our universe will continue to increase, and when it reaches a maximum, the universe will reach heat death.

The entropy increase theorem, which has the same status as energy conservation, allows us to see the irreversibility of death and makes us feel the despair that the universe will die one day.

So what is the meaning of life?

According to the principle of entropy increase, everything should move from order to disorder. According to this theory, there should be nothing more orderly than the present in the universe, so there is no reason for life to evolve from lower to higher.

Fortunately, however, the entropy of the universe does not always increase continuously and uniformly. The universe is so big, and at certain times and in certain areas, it will always experience fluctuations in entropy, like a tide. This gave life a chance to emerge and evolve.

Boltzmann said: If the known low-entropy universe is derived from the fluctuation of entropy, then there should also be many low-entropy self-awarenesses in the fluctuation, such as a lonely brain.

A long time ago (forgive me for not knowing exactly how long it was), an accidental large entropy drop occurred in the large nebula in the Orion cantilever of the Milky Way, and a huge Boltzmann brain was born——

Her name is: Gaia.

I've revised this chapter several times, but I'm still not very satisfied with it because it's too important and has so many threads that I feel like I can't write it down.
