Exploiting Hollywood 1980

Chapter 50 National frenzy

The premiere of "Star Wars - Return of the Jedi" was like no other. Everyone came to the scene wearing Star Wars themed T-shirts.

The queue outside the cinema was several kilometers long. Many fans dressed up as characters in the movie. Some wore Darth Vader's black armor or held Lu Zoutian's lightsaber. Some girls combed their hair into Princess Leia's bun.

When Ronald walked over, there happened to be a TV station interviewing the audience. Some people said that they had already queued here at 6 o'clock in the morning, and they were only in line for the second round.

Walking through the queues at the main entrance of the theater, some lucky people who got invitations to the premiere could see the movie two hours earlier than everyone else.

Cinema security guards, in uniform, were maintaining order and only those with invitations could enter. Ronald took out the invitation and handed it over. Looking back, he saw that the dense crowd stretched to the other side of the road.

America is a nation without history. Its citizens immigrated from the Old World to the New World, so it has never had its own heroic epics like the various nations in the Old World.

Lucas' film trilogy is like a heroic epic to these children. Moreover, thanks to film technology, it is an epic with figures, images, and special effects.

Unlike the long-running TV series "Starfleet," "Star Wars" is more personal heroism and more dramatic. Although it was only born six years ago, it has already left a deep mark on a generation of young people in America.

Star Wars’ intrusion into American culture is comprehensive.

The SDI missile defense system announced by the commander-in-chief this time has been called Star Wars by many people. His previous speech on the Evil Empire was also quoted by members of Congress, comparing the Suvir Alliance to Darth Vader. This movie has entered daily language expression in America.

Although the Academy Awards organizing committee and the Directors Guild disliked George Lucas very much, they did not give him recognition for Best Director or Best Picture, and only gave him some technical awards. But this does not prevent teenagers across the country from viewing Lucas as the greatest visionary.

Ronald is very envious. This kind of being able to embed his own film into the language level is a more solid and permanent monument than the Oscar. I don’t know if I can change the language of America in one or two small ways in the future.

In addition to the invited industry friends, most of the attendees were lucky audience members who wrote letters to Lucas and were eventually selected.

Lucas personally came to the scene to congratulate everyone on the final release of the final part of the trilogy.

Soon, the curtain was raised and the film was officially screened.

Ronald watched the movie with great interest. After three years in the last "Empire Strikes Back", Darth Vader claimed to be Luke's father, many viewers wanted to know whether this was Vader's lie or the truth.

Princess Leia took off her elegant robe and put on a sexy bikini to dance for the slave owner Jabba, and the entire audience made a loud swallowing sound.

Then Luke appeared, made a homemade green lightsaber, defeated Jabba, and rescued the carbonized Han Solo. Everyone discovered that the Emperor of the Empire was developing a second Death Star and wanted to destroy the resistance.

After a series of battles, Luke faced the Emperor and Darth Vader's attack alone. In the final battle, Luke chops off Vader's robotic arm. The Emperor tried to seduce him full of negative emotions and fall to the dark side.

The voices of Obi-Wan and Yoda rang in Luke's ears. He gave up negative emotions such as anger and fear, and was unwilling to surrender to the dark side of the Force. He was shocked by the Emperor's Force lightning. After all, Darth Vader couldn't resist the love between father and son, and pushed the emperor off the throne and fell into space. Unfortunately, he died of exhaustion in the end.

The ending was another Star Wars tradition, with everyone standing together and smiling happily. But this time there are three more Force spirits of the Jedi Knights, Yoda, Obi-Wan, and Darth Vader's true form Anakin.

The audience began to shout loudly and applaud enthusiastically. After three years of waiting, a complete and wonderful story finally came.

Ten minutes passed before the audience stopped applauding. There were already camera crews from several TV stations waiting at the door to interview the audience.

Ronald has a special car waiting here to pick up some of their guests to celebrate the party. After eight years, George Lucas finally completed the Star Wars trilogy. He is the emperor tonight.

The celebration party was held at the Beverly Hills Hilton Hotel. With mountains of champagne, huge cakes, various delicacies, and wearing T-shirts, the atmosphere was completely different from ordinary movie parties.

Ronald saw his agent Niceta coming to the scene and greeted him, "Rick, why are you here too? Do you want to sign Chewbacca?"

George Lucas had a falling out with the Directors Guild, so his last two films were directed by non-union directors. Several starring actors in Star Wars have long been firmly tied to agents. As for the two robots c3po and r2d2, they are not qualified to sign contracts with agents.

So Ronald joked with him that he was going to sign a fluffy Wookiee.

"I came here specifically to remind you not to mention Martha in front of George." Niceta whispered in Ronald's ear.

"What?" Ronald was a little confused.

"Ovitz told me today that George's wife Martha has cheated on her and is divorcing him. So I'm here to remind you that when you congratulate George, don't mention Martha's name."

"Oh, thank you." Ronald thanked Niceta. George Lucas is the most profitable director now, with two major killer movie series, Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark. It's not worth it to cause ill feelings if Lucas finds out about someone else's private matters.

"Congratulations, Mr. Lucas. This movie is very good. It finally fulfilled a dream I had when I was a kid to watch A New Hope. Luke became a great Jedi warrior. I wonder if you will continue to make it?"

Ronald found an opportunity to go up and congratulate Lucas.

"Oh, Ronald. Hello. Not for the time being. I'm too tired. I've paid too much for this Return of the Jedi. After that, I think I'll take a break." Lucas told Rona De was still impressed and chatted with him briefly.

"It seemed like he was really not in a good mental state. He didn't seem too happy that night when the movie was a hit."

"Hey, you don't know, this incident hit George hard." Niceta finally sent Ronald home and told him the whole story in the car.

It turns out that the director of "Return of the Jedi" was originally booked to be Spielberg, but the Directors Guild banned union members from working on Lucas' project. Lucas experienced rejections from David Lynch, Dutch director Paul Verhoeven and others, and finally found a Welshman, Richard Marquand, as director.

But Richard Marquand was so arbitrary on the set of Pinewood in London that he had major conflicts with the actors who played the three protagonists. In the end, Lucas had to take over halfway and flew to London to pick up the directing job himself.

George Lucas and Martha originally had a lot of conflicts because George was busy at work. One of their adopted daughters was left in a high-end hotel and left to Martha to take care of while George was away in London.

Martha Lucas was a very good editor. He was once Martin Scorsese's go-to editor and collaborated on all of Scorsese's best-selling works. But now it is unbearable for her to be a housewife whose husband does not come home.

Martha later returned to the estate Lucas bought and concentrated on renovating her own house. She hopes to cover the dome of a library with stained glass from Renaissance churches, which will look very artistic.

Who knew this glass-firing artist would take advantage of the opportunity? George Lucas begged and begged, but he could not win back Martha's heart. The two only waited for "Return of the Jedi" to be released before announcing their divorce. The reason for not divorcing immediately is to watch the final episode of the Star Wars trilogy and not be disturbed by this gossip.

Martha Lucas herself also won the Oscar for Best Editing for her editing of "Star Wars - A New Hope". She was also very emotional about the Star Wars series, so the two agreed to announce their divorce later.

"Oh, how could this happen? The last time I saw them, they looked very affectionate." Ronald sighed in the passenger seat.

"This is inevitable. For a movie, especially a big one like Star Wars, the preparation, shooting, editing, and special effects production often take a year or two. And for a workaholic like George, he may not be able to talk to Martha when he gets home. A few words, no matter how affectionate you are, there will be problems."

"Then Martha is miserable. She cheated on her first, so she won't get any property?"

"What does this have to do with cheating? Is it your New York state law? California is a state where assets are equally divided." Niceta looked at Ronald in surprise.

"Huh?" Ronald was surprised, "I didn't know that."

"California law stipulates that no matter who makes the greater contribution to the couple's property after marriage, the property will be divided equally after divorce. In addition, generally the woman will be responsible for child support and will be divided more."

"Oh," Ronald thought to himself. If he gets married in California in the future, it would be better not to get divorced.

The next day, the nation awaited the box office results of "Star Wars - Return of the Jedi." The end result was $6.2 million.

After Ronald learned about this result, he knew that the theaters for "Night of the Comet" would be compressed.

Over the weekend, "Return of the Jedi" grossed $23 million, becoming the first movie in American history to top $20 million in its opening weekend.

"Night of the Comet" was squeezed into only about 700 theaters. Although the box office of a single theater did not drop much, the total box office dropped below 3 million US dollars to 2.4 million US dollars.

Turn on the TV and it’s all Star Wars news and talk shows. Open a major newspaper like the Los Angeles Times, and all Star Wars-related news will be on the front page.

At the end of the "Star Wars" trilogy, the audience frantically bid farewell to the three protagonists and their own youth. They have pushed this modern American epic from the entertainment section to the front page, from NBC Entertainment News to NBC National News.

English-speaking countries, including Canada, Britain, Australia, and New Zealand, are also eagerly looking forward to the early arrival of movie copies. There are also viewers who can't stand it and fly across the ocean to New York to watch it.

Faced with the craze sweeping the world, Ronald's "Valley of Comet" had no choice but to retreat. Fortunately, it has accumulated more than 11 million box office in the first two weeks, and with the 2.4 million in the third weekend, it is already close to 15 million box office results.
