Exploiting Hollywood 1980

Chapter 8 The Great Cold

It was a light winter rain in Los Angeles that day. Ronald hid in his apartment to modify the script, and the raindrops hit the windows. Ronald turned a blind eye and only focused on revising the script. He wanted to delete all the special effects of the comet hitting the earth from the script. . .

Cousin Donna once said that the tails of some comets can sweep across the Earth without humans feeling it. So Ronald added this concept in, a comet that came to the earth tens of millions of years ago, when the comet tail sweeps over the earth, it will cause biological extinction.

All creatures that see the red glow of the comet's tail turn to dust. Only creatures that hid in caves and were not exposed to radiation from the comet's tail survived. That's how dinosaurs went extinct, while human ancestors lived in caves, escaped doom, and gained an edge in evolution.

Now the comet is back, and only those hiding in basements, or behind thick walls, are spared. To make matters worse, some fell short of the lethal dose of radiation and turned into zombies, attacking the surviving living in the city.

It was mid-January, and Ronald modified a lot of special effects scenes according to Cameron's plan. The limited funds are diverted to several special effects scenes that can convince the audience.

This is the low-cost production secret passed down by Roger Coleman. The budget of the film should be concentrated in a few important scenes, and a few scenes that seem to cost several times the cost to be shot. This way the audience will remember the scenes and ignore the rough scenes that are underfunded.

The time is approaching the coldest of the twenty-four solar terms that the Chinese call it, the Great Cold. Contrary to the snowstorm in New York, the temperature in Los Angeles is relatively comfortable. It is close to the West Coast and the climate is much more suitable for human habitation.

"Ring, ring, ring..." Ronald, who was flying with his fingers in front of the keyboard, was suddenly interrupted by the ringing of the phone.

"Hey!" He answered the phone angrily.

"Ronald, I'm Phoebe."

"Oh, Phoebe, hello. Long time no see, how's it going, any new movies?" Ronald recognized Phoebe Cates, the bikini beauty in "Fast Tempo". He hasn't had any more contact with the actors since his film marketing tour ended.

"Ronald, Jennifer is by my side, we want to invite you to the party. Yes, the party, it's..."

"Sorry, Phoebe, Jennifer," Ronald heard Jennifer Jason Leigh also on the phone, "I'm busy with my next movie right now, and I'm afraid I don't have time to party."

"Ronald, I heard from the agent that you are looking for a male lead, why don't you come and see, we went to a party where we went to a successful trial screening of a movie, and there were a lot of handsome actors in it." Jennifer Jason Lee grabbed it microphone,

Persuade Ronald to come out.

"Yeah? Well, where are you? I'll go."

Hearing that there was an actor, Ronald archived the script file he was writing, then turned off his computer and drove to Jennifer's reported address.

"Hi, Jennifer, it's me, Ronald." Ronald unexpectedly found that the apartment Jennifer lived in was very high-end, and the doorman's dress and communication system were better than his own.

"Ronald", Jennifer warmly welcomed the director who made her popular at the door of the apartment, and welcomed Ronald into the apartment. Inside the apartment was a very large living room, and her best best friend Phoebe Cates was sitting on the sofa.

The two actresses became close friends after being "fast-paced" and Phoebe stayed at Jennifer's house when she came to Los Angeles to audition.

"Phoebe," Ronald beckoned to Phoebe, who found a man sitting with Phoebe on the sofa.

"Ronald," Phoebe jumped up, "I'll introduce you, this is my friend, Kevin. Kevin, this is Ronald."

"Hi, hello Ronald, I often hear Phoebe talk about you, and I'll work with you once I get a chance."

"Hi Kevin, I really enjoyed your scene with Mel Streep." Ronald and Phoebe and her boyfriend both hugged.

He didn't expect Phoebe's friend to be Kevin Kline, the hero of the film "Sophie's choice", which was just released. It seemed that he was after her.

Is Phoebe going to recommend Kevin Kline for the lead role?

"Kevin invited us to the screening party where he just finished the movie, and Jennifer remembered that you were also in Los Angeles, and we had one less male companion, so I just asked you out." Phoebe explained.

"My pleasure, don't know what movie the party is?"

"The big chill, like fast-paced, is a group drama with four male protagonists and four female protagonists. Maybe you can find the male protagonist of your next movie." Phoebe grabbed said the answer.

"My next movie is a small production, and maybe you can't even afford it," Ronald smiled, maybe Phoebe was well-intentioned, or he wanted to find a reliable man to accompany him to the party.

However, in a movie starring a male star of Kevin Klein's level, the remuneration of other male characters in it, I guess I can't afford it. Just go and relax.

"Let's go, the party is next to Beverly Hills."

Ronald got Jennifer into his car and followed Kevin and Phoebe to the party venue.

"Your house is very nice." Ronald and Jennifer chatted on the road.

"My father's civil lawsuit was settled out of court, and they paid me a large amount of compensation. My sister and I are one and a half."

Ronald raised his eyebrows, Spielberg and John Landis, several victims of the helicopter beheading accident were sued separately, and only Jennifer here was the first to reconcile.

The settlement amount was not released, but judging from where Jennifer lives, it appears to be a lot of money. Now she won't be filming for the rest of her life, and she can spend her life worrying about food and clothing.

"Whose house are we going to party?" Ronald knew that there were usually mansions next to Beverly Hills, and that such parties were usually held at the home of an actor, director, or producer.

"The heroine's home, I heard that her husband is a producer."

Soon the car drove to the party venue, a big three-story house. Ronald walked in with Phoebe, Jennifer, and Kevin.

"This is jeff goldblum, william hurt, and tom berenger." Kevin Klein introduced Ronald to the "Big Chill" three Male lead.

Ronald hugged and said hello to them. Several of them were accomplished male movie stars. They had also heard Ronald's name and said hello to each other.

"Kevin, won't you introduce us to your little friend?"

The speaker is one of the heroines of "Great Cold", Glenn Close (glenn close), she and the other two heroines play the roles of college classmates, wives, lovers and other roles of the three male protagonists.

Several college classmates reunited for the first time after graduating from college at the funeral of their old classmate Alex Marshall after his suicide.

This is a story based on drama and conflict. It unfolds slowly from flashbacks many years later, showing the life experiences, regrets of the past, and future expectations of six college friends, and slowly uncovering the mystery of Alex Marshall's suicide .

Ronald knew that this kind of movie was very dependent on the acting skills of the actors, and the actors were the best among young and middle-aged actors, so he cheered up and got to know them.

Jeff Goldblum wears a pair of glasses, and he's relatively unknown among the four male leads, so chatting with Ronald is a little more speculative. The two were drinking cocktails and talking in a corner.

"You know what? Kevin seems to be tempted. He dumped Sally Field for Phoebe."

"Oh yeah?" Ronald didn't expect Jeff Goldblum to gossip so much, so he wentssip about Kevin Klein.

He saw that Kevin was standing with Phoebe and looked over here. I knew in my heart that maybe Goldblum was here to snoop and leak news.

"I know Jennifer and Phoebe are great friends."

"Glenn is taking her to meet people." Goldblum gestured to actress Glenn Close to chat with Jennifer.

"You seem to have a good relationship?" Ronald smiled and indicated.

"The Great Cold is a rare group drama, and we really enjoyed it. Lawrence Kasdan's ability to direct is extraordinary."

"Um..." Ronald knew the director who turned out to be a screenwriter. He was the chief writer of two summer blockbuster movies, "Star Wars - The Empire Strikes Back" and "Indiana Jones - The Lost Ark of the Covenant".

He also wrote and directed an erotic thriller "Body Heat" the year before last, which made the heroine Kathleen Turner famous.

"So this is director Kasdan's home?" Ronald asked.

"No, this is the home of one of the heroines, and her husband is also a famous producer, so we can borrow her house."

"Oh, who is it?" Ronald looked at the three heroines in the party. If a female star finds a big-name producer to marry, it means that she will play the leading role in a series of movies.

"It wasn't them, it was Chloe, the young girlfriend of Alex Marshall who died in the movie. Interestingly, Phoebe actually came to audition for the role of Chloe at the time, although she lost to the hostess in the end, but Kevin used to say he was lucky enough to meet Phoebe who auditioned."

"It turns out that it is." Ronald nodded. The age gap between these people and Phoebe in the movie is not small, and Kevin Klein also has a large age gap with Phoebe in life. It seems that Kevin really takes Phoebe seriously and invites all her friends to the party.

"The mistress is down." Jeff Goldblum poked Ronald, a young actress, walking down the second floor.

"Kevin, Glenn..." The hostess was very young, with black hair, and seemed a little immature as a hostess, but she still fulfilled her duties as a hostess to welcome guests.

"Thank you for coming to this test screening party. Director Kasdan said the test screening worked well..."

Ronald squinted his eyes, it's really never met in life. This hostess is her ex-girlfriend Meg Tilly, so this mansion belongs to her husband Kinneman?

"Oh, Ronald, why are you here?" Meg Tilly blurted out when she saw Ronald was among the guests.

All eyes were on him for a while.

"I came with Kevin..." Ronald replied with a smile.

"Oh, well, who's this?" Meg Tilly continued to greet the guests, but she became a little nervous and walked a little stiffly.

"You two knew each other before?" Glenn Close leaned forward and asked Ronald, the most sensitive of the actresses.

"Yeah, Ellen Parker's 'Famous Around the World,' and I was doing errands on the set. Instead of Meg, another girl was cast. It was a group show, too. Hello, Glenn." Ronald and her Say hello, then ask her about Dahan.

Meg Tilly turned around and greeted everyone, and ordered the waiter to start serving snacks and more champagne.

Seeing that Ronald didn't move, she put down half of her worries and began to chat and laugh loudly with the guests.

"Isn't this a college movie? Why is there an actress who is obviously many years younger playing the role of the girlfriend of the deceased?" Ronald asked Jeff Goldblum and Glenn Close, who were next to him. .

"This is the setting of the script. Alexis is different from all these classmates. He is more real to his heart, so he has a childish girlfriend who is many years younger."

Ronald figured out the plot. It turned out that the plot is a number of experienced good actors, coupled with a young actress.

No wonder there are so many people vying for this position. In the plot, Chloe is a childish girlfriend, so that the actor's own acting flaws will not be magnified. But she can perform on the same stage with seven or eight good actors, which is indeed a good opportunity to become famous.

It seems that Kinneman has more energy and tucks Meg Tilly into the crew.

"Kevin, here you are." Another actor was late, and the hostess Meg Tilly greeted him.

This actor, also named Kevin, came late and didn't look very good. After greeting Meg, he squeezed a smile and chatted with the actors present.

"He played the role of Alex Marshall who committed suicide. Unfortunately, all the scenes at the end were deleted by director Kasdan, and none of them remained."

Ronald looked at Goldblum in surprise, so miserable?

Meg was still talking to this newcomer Kevin, "You're so miserable, Kevin. I heard Director Kasdan will give you a promise? You'll be in the next movie."

Kevin smiled helplessly and took a sip of wine, he didn't want to mention his tragedy any more.

Several actors did not let him go and began to tease his misfortune, "Really there is not a single shot? I didn't look for it carefully, maybe there is a vision?"

"No, there isn't a single face-showing shot. I've been looking for a long time, but the only shot I'm lying in the coffin is showing one foot. It seems Kasdan doesn't like my face." Kevin joked to himself.

"Kevin, you shouldn't say that. Director Kasdan must have his intentions in handling it this way." Meg was still talking stupidly.

"Maybe Kasdan thinks your feet are good, hahaha."

One of the leading actors, Tom Berenger, drank too much and made inappropriate jokes.

"Tom," Glenn Gross tugged at him and told him to stop.

"I have a gift from the director here, one for each person." Meg Tilly also began to smooth things out. She took out a large box with a lot of cashmere scarves in it, and distributed one to each actor participating in the show.

"Oh, Kevin, it just happened to be gone, sorry." Meg was assigned to the new Kevin, just in time for the scarf.

"Tsk," Ronald pouted. Meg Tilly was still so naive when she was married. There was obviously a better way to deal with Kevin's dissatisfaction on this occasion.

To humiliate others face to face like this is a great hatred for young actors. Who knows if he will become a superstar in the future and block your way in turn?

The new Kevin was very embarrassed, but he quickly adjusted, gulping down the champagne and smiling, "Hey, you bastards, you know? I'm going to be better than you all in the future."

His tone of speech was handled very well, half joking and half serious, everyone burst into laughter, and this embarrassing scene was fooled.

Then this Kevin stayed for a while, taking advantage of everyone's distraction, he put away his smile, turned back and walked out of the party.

"Jennifer, talk to Phoebe, I have something to do first." Ronald has been following him. Seeing that he is leaving, he quickly stepped forward and grabbed Jennifer Jason Lee. After saying a word, he ran after him. .

"Interesting." Jeff Goldblum said to himself after seeing all of Ronald's movements.

"Dear, did you greet these VIPs for me? Huh?"

With a sharp and somewhat offensive voice, the owner of the mansion, Meg Tilly's husband, Tim Kinniman, came down the stairs.

"Of course, Tim, of course." Meg Tilly became suddenly cautious, pressing the hem of her dress, trying to act like a mistress, holding Kinneyman's hand.

"You still have a lot to learn as a hostess. Don't let anyone feel left out," Tim Kinneman began to greet guests, "and, more importantly, don't spend time with single male guests. Very secret."

"I know, Tim. I'm trying." Meg Tilly agreed in a low voice, almost staggering at the last sentence.

"Kevin, Kevin." Ronald hurried out of the party and loudly stopped the actors in front.

"Ronald?" The lonely actor turned his head in the drizzle ahead, "I mean, Director Li, hello."

"Kevin Costner. I have a small production here. Would you like to play the male lead?"

Ronald finally caught up with him and pointed to his car, "If you're interested, get in the car and we'll talk slowly."
