From Flower Vase to Film Emperor in Hollywood
#121 - Visiting the Set
Serious, profound, and imposing even without anger, his unhurried words carried a hint of doubt in their drawn-out ending, and the air seemed to freeze.
However.
Unexpectedly, Anson met Gary's gaze with a face full of composure, answering with a forthright and confident tone.
"Yes, sir."
His words remained deeply meaningful.
Anson nodded, "Then what about success?"
That would be Anson's achievement.
This was the risk, with the consequences of success and failure to be borne by himself.
Gary could hear the deeper meaning in Anson's words, and a smile crept into his eyes, "You kid, you really are young, fearless. Ah, it's good to be young."
Anson, however, was not young.
In truth, his mentality was quite aged, having lived through countless hardships and turbulent years; but reborn, he wanted to seize every moment, not wait until the end of his life to finally enjoy it.
Even if he didn't want to or dare to, Anson was actively making attempts.
What if he failed?
So what? At least he would have tried.
However, there was no need for Gary to know these details.
Gary looked at Anson's sunny smile, his thoughts pulled back, "So, do you already have some ideas? About the band's original music?"
Anson let out a long breath, "I've already made such bold claims, I have to conjure up some ideas even if I don't have any, or I'll lose face."
His hesitant demeanor as he spoke made Gary laugh heartily, clapping Anson heavily on the back, "Then I'll be waiting to see."
Clearly, creating music was not an easy task, but he did have some ideas.
In his previous life, in his youthful exuberance, he had dreamed of a life where he stood on stage, touching people's hearts with music, and he had also dreamed of the life of a wandering musician, traveling the world with his guitar, playing melodies and singing about life on the streets, making his music a part of other people's journeys.
However, he ultimately failed to persevere, the burdens of life weighing heavily on his shoulders, and the bright and dazzling dreams were quickly submerged in the day-to-day work, covered in a thick layer of dust, never to be seen again, and the fantasies of his youth were never awakened.
Perhaps, he could give his dreams another chance —
Anyway, Gary had said that the music of a teenage garage band was bound to be a mixed bag, and that it wasn't the focus of the film, just like the music and books Anson was researching, merely an extension of the character.
Awful. Noisy. Psychedelic.
This was also Michael's unique charm.
Therefore, Anson could feel free to boldly and unrestrainedly experiment.
Even if he failed, he should seize the opportunity to enjoy everything in front of him and not let down his second life.
And so.
On the film crew's bus back to the Fairmont resort, Anson was deep in thought.
Michael liked blues rock and Britpop, including but not limited to The Beatles, The Beach Boys, and so on. When researching the character, Anson carefully listened to a large amount of music from the sixties and seventies, not only the aforementioned ones, but also the psychedelic rock, progressive rock, and experimental rock that were emerging one after another.
Interestingly, garage rock was born in the sixties.
In those years, rock and roll swept the globe, and countless high school students practiced with their bands in their garages, hence the name garage rock. Their music was simple and raw, mainly depicting high school life or the social environment, venting their emotions.
Garage rock can be regarded as the predecessor of punk rock.
At the same time, from another perspective, the nineties were a different story.
Grunge rock, Britpop, and pop punk fully occupied the market, representing different styles, different types, and different definitions, once again awakening the rock and roll craze.
So, would Michael, who practiced with his band in the garage, choose the rock of the sixties, or would he keep pace with the times and choose the rock of the nineties?
Anson had said before that Michael was a teenager with his own ideas. He didn't reject trends, and he wouldn't deliberately choose alternative things to show his uniqueness, but his choices were always made after his own consideration, not blindly.
So, Anson thought, maybe Michael would choose the garage rock type, especially punk, which could not only show his love for the culture of the sixties, but also show his keen grasp of the development of the times.
Of course, there was another reason due to Disney —
"The Princess Diaries" was a work produced and distributed by Disney. In order to cater to the market, they would definitely choose a rating suitable for all ages, which meant that they would not allow the band in it to perform too explicitly, too angrily, or too sharply.
Otherwise, "Yi Jian Mei", all of Anson's efforts would be in vain.
In fact, the punk revival of the nineties did not have the anger and irritability of the past. Bands led by Green Day and My Chemical Romance were often cheerful and positive, and many romantic love songs with a youthful atmosphere were born.
This was just right.
After all, Michael's band performance not only needed to show his charm and enrich the character; but also needed to secretly express his feelings to Mia, enriching the plot.
In an instant, the whole concept became three-dimensional.
Slowly, the bus came to a stop.
Anson pulled himself out of his thoughts, and in the blink of an eye, he had arrived at his destination. Looking ahead, the actors and staff were preparing to get off the bus one after another; their chattering and noisy appearance was exactly like a middle school outing, and the whole crew, from top to bottom, was harmonious.
Could this be considered a benefit of the fact that the crew had no big-name actors and were all young newcomers?
But it was unknown whether things would change after Julie Andrews joined the crew.
Anson was still not in a hurry, waiting for most of the people on the bus to leave before getting off unhurriedly.
Before he had time to leave the carriage, he could see Anne Hathaway passing by with a drink in her hand. Anson was about to joke with Anne, but Anne spoke first with lightning speed.
"Thank you, Anson!"
Anson: ???
Anson wasn't sure, "You're welcome?"
His head was full of question marks.
But before Anson could speak, Anne had already turned and rushed into the hotel lobby, and her joy could be seen from her back, which made Anson even more confused.
Immediately afterwards, Anson saw a lighting technician walking over from the direction Anne had just come from, also holding a drink in his hand, which, judging from the outer packaging, seemed to be from the same store.
Anson preemptively asked, "What's wrong with Anne?"
Unexpectedly, the lighting technician didn't answer either, but instead showed a big smile, raised the disposable paper cup in his hand high, "Anson, thank you!"
Anson: ?
Could someone explain to him what was going on? Even if they wanted to thank him, at least let him know what he had done. Could it be that someone had done a good deed without leaving a name and it had fallen on Anson's head?
Could there really be such a good thing?
