#1329 - Hurt each other
Here, it connects seamlessly with the opening of the movie, forming a closed loop.
This is Joel and Clementine's third encounter—
After breaking up, both of them deleted each other's memories. Patrick took advantage of the situation, and Clementine tried to fall in love with Patrick, but failed.
On the night Joel was deleting his memories, Patrick's attempt to win back Clementine was unsuccessful, and Clementine fell into struggle.
The next morning, Joel deleted his memories but, following the belief deep in his memory, went to Montauk; then, he met Clementine with green hair there.
In just three days and two nights, the two of them passionately fell in love again.
Patrick?
Clementine had completely thrown him to the back of her mind, leaving him on repeat in the answering machine; staying by Joel's side, she herself didn't understand, it seemed natural, finally able to breathe, finally finding herself, that bewildered confusion and panic finally settled down, finding peace.
Sitting in the passenger seat, Clementine opened the letter but couldn't understand the contents, "This is strange."
"To all patients of Dr. Howard,
My name is Mary. We have met before, but you don't remember me. I work at Lacuna, Inc., responsible for erasing your memories. Later, I realized that doing so was terrible. To make amends, I decided to send all your files back…"
Happiness lasted for less than a minute.
Clementine put the tape into the car player, and then she heard her own voice.
"Just looking at him, I can't stand it anymore. That pathetic, tepid, apologetic smile, like a wounded puppy. After the novelty wears off, I can't stand him anymore."
In the car stereo, the tape was playing.
In the car, Joel and Clementine didn't understand what was happening. Both of their defense mechanisms were erected, and they argued fiercely.
Finally, Joel stopped the car on the street, opened the passenger door, and refused to exchange glances with Clementine.
Clementine couldn't believe all of this. She packed her things without saying a word and turned away angrily, returning to her apartment.
As a result, she saw Patrick downstairs in the apartment building with a face full of pleading. Clementine was not in the mood to solve Patrick's problems, so Clementine roared and chased Patrick away.
Back in the apartment, Clementine broke down.
Sadness. Pain. Despair. Anger. Torment.
Clementine tortured herself in the apartment, unable to figure it out no matter how much she thought; but after repeatedly going back and forth, Clementine refused to torture herself alone.
According to the information in the file folder, Clementine drove to Joel's apartment by herself. As soon as she pushed the door open, she encountered a guy she didn't know at all greeting her familiarly. Clementine didn't understand what was happening, but she didn't have time to think about it. She angrily found Joel's apartment.
Unexpectedly, the apartment door was not closed, and the tape was also playing inside. It was Joel's voice.
"…I think she's very smart, but not educated."
"I can't talk to her about books. She's more of a magazine girl. Her vocabulary needs to be increased. In fact, I feel a little embarrassed every time I take her out because of her pronunciation…"
Clementine tiptoed into the apartment and saw Joel curled up into a ball, hugging his knees and sitting on the floor in the room inside.
"Hey." Clementine greeted.
Joel suddenly raised his head, hurriedly turned his head to hide his embarrassment, and then looked at Clementine again, opening his mouth in a hoarse voice, "Hey."
On the radio, Joel's complaints were still rambling on and on.
Joel and Clementine exchanged timid glances, but they didn't know how to start.
Finally, Joel took out a painting, "Look what I found."
After all, there were still some omissions. Despite trying his best to collect items closely related to Clementine, there were still omissions.
It was a painting. On a skeleton, Clementine, with bright red hair, was adventuring in the stormy waves, like a pirate captain.
Clementine took it, gently tugged at the corner of her mouth, "This makes me look very bony."
But after she finished speaking, the corner of her mouth flattened, and her eyes were slightly moist. She rubbed her nose in a slightly embarrassed manner.
Joel noticed, and he also turned his head to the other side in embarrassment.
Joel stood up, drooping his head, took a deep breath, "I'm sorry for yelling at you."
Clementine's sharp thorns all retracted, "It's okay."
Clementine stood up, "I really like you, and I hate myself for speaking harshly to you."
On the side, the radio was still chattering endlessly, endlessly, endlessly.
Joel couldn't stand his own voice, "Let me turn that thing off."
But Clementine stopped him, "That's fair."
On the radio, Joel was complaining: As for her hair, it's just a mess, it's really too pathetic.
Joel showed an awkward smile, "I really like your hair."
Clementine, "Thank you."
Joel: This world is already a mess, and her hair is simply a disaster…
Joel scratched his head awkwardly, "Would you like something to drink?"
Clementine, "Whiskey?"
Radio: I don't think she has any motivation for 'boat,' I saw through her completely last night when I was with her, not sexy, just purely… pathetic. Clementine believes that men will only like her when she contributes 'boat,' so she will deliberately provoke men's thoughts in this regard. I think she is too desperate and insecure, and sooner or later she will be with another man…
The conversation stopped.
Clementine didn't speak, and Joel didn't speak either. After Joel handed a glass of whiskey to Clementine, the two of them looked away in a panic.
He and she just sat quietly in the living room, letting the voice on the radio continue to chatter endlessly, endlessly.
Clementine was so calm, but her calmness revealed a faint sadness and pain.
Joel closed his eyes in despair, his expression full of struggle.
It was at this moment, this brief moment, watching two people who clearly loved each other begin to hurt each other at the end of building a long-term relationship.
That's too cruel and too bloody.
Blair quietly watched this scene, watching Clementine and Joel's lonely figures looking away, hiding her facial expressions in the shadows, but ultimately unable to hide her fragility and panic.
Tears slowly slid down, scalding her cheeks, but Blair didn't raise her hand to wipe them away, just quietly staring at the big screen in the hazy blur of tears.
At this moment, she truly understood how turbulent and magnificent the sadness of that villa disintegrating and disappearing into ashes was.
