From Flower Vase to Film Emperor in Hollywood
#181 - A shot back
The atmosphere was filled with joy.
Sam could sense the scorching gazes surging from all directions, carrying scrutiny and inquiry. Astonishment and bewilderment churned within those gazes, landing on his skin like a bustling crowd, causing all his hair to stand on end.
But he didn't mind it at all, his smile fully blossoming, experiencing a long-lost sense of exhilaration.
Sam then consoled, "Even the most experienced top actors can't avoid it."
Anson spread his hands, "I'm very certain and sure that this shouldn't be the last time.", After all, he still had many things to learn on the path of an actor, "But next time, I should be more calm."
Haha, bursts of laughter erupted like thunder.
Ian was also in a cheerful mood, looking at Anson, the more he looked, the more satisfied he became, "Looking at your skills just now, have you studied martial arts?"
"Just a little foundation." Anson told the truth, "But I'm interested in continuing to learn. Actually, I don't have muscle definition, I'm wearing so many clothes to hide the cruel fact that I don't have muscle definition."
One second, two seconds—
Roaring laughter.
What Anson said was indeed the truth. When Sam said he was trying to hide his muscle definition, Anson wanted to reply that he really didn't have any.
Although he had been skateboarding recently, slowly regaining some feeling, muscle definition was not something that could be achieved overnight. The original owner of the body only had an empty shell, and there were no muscles at all.
Having no muscles had both advantages and disadvantages for the role of Peter Parker.
As Sam said, the previous Peter Parker was just a nerd, thin and without muscles, which was normal; but considering that the movie was about Spider-Man, Peter Parker mostly had muscles, so Anson judged that his current physical condition had more disadvantages than advantages, which was why he wore an onion-like outfit, layer upon layer.
If Anson won the role, he could be like Hayden, slowly undergoing training and developing his muscle definition, while also expanding his future acting roles.
But the opportunity just now was not appropriate. In Sam's questioning, any answer would have sounded like a forced argument, which might disrupt the audition's rhythm, so Anson didn't speak.
Now the opportunity came, and Anson told the truth appropriately.
Sam, however, noticed Anson's words, "Can you skateboard even without athletic ability? I always thought that skateboarding was only for athletes."
Just now, Sam pointed out Anson's preparation flaws, and now it seemed that it was his preconceived prejudice at work; if Anson could also skateboard, could Peter Parker also skateboard from the beginning?
So, Anson didn't make a mistake?
Anson nodded, "Skateboarding requires balance."
"If you want to do freestyle skateboarding, all kinds of difficult techniques, then you do need athletic ability; but if it's just some basics, having a sense of balance is enough. Many skateboarders are very thin, looking weak and without muscles."
Sam suddenly understood.
However, Sam didn't continue the topic but fell into his own thoughts.
Ian had long been accustomed to this, naturally taking over the topic, looking left and right, "I think it's about time, do you have any other questions?"
The question was a question, but the focus of his gaze fell on the slightly chubby lady.
"Laura?" Ian called out.
The slightly chubby lady didn't speak immediately, but sized Anson up and down. This pause slightly lengthened the ending, as if she was scrutinizing him, but at the critical moment when the atmosphere was about to change, she spoke, breaking the silence.
"No. Everything's fine."
Anson was a little surprised. He thought that this lady might ask some additional questions, but he didn't expect her to take it so easily.
Ian was also a little surprised, but didn't say much. He looked at Anson again, revealing a smile, and said some polite, formal words, "Thank you very much for coming to the audition. Today's audition ends here. Please wait for further contact. I hope we can meet again."
Bla bla bla.
These words were familiar to new actors, but they were often just empty promises, because the rejection call might not come at all, and a pending expectation would remain suspended in mid-air.
For Anson, this was the first time—
During "Friends", Anson knew that the audition was just a formality, but the call to become a guest star was a surprise.
During "The Princess Diaries", he was cast on the spot.
Now, Anson finally understood what Chris, Hayden, and the others meant when they talked about the standard words at the end of an audition. It was indeed exciting.
But whether there would really be a follow-up remained unknown.
Anson pursed his lips slightly, revealing a smile that only he knew, and also said politely, "Thank you for being willing to give me a chance to try."
Then, carrying his backpack, he turned around and prepared to leave.
"Wait."
Unexpectedly, a voice came from the side, calling out to Anson, who was about to leave.
Turning around, Anson once again saw Sam's messy hair and sleepy eyes, which, although still not fully open, seemed particularly focused.
Throughout the whole process, no one asked this question, because they all knew the answer, so they simply didn't ask and didn't give the actor room to express himself freely; but in the end, Sam was a little curious about how Anson would answer.
Anson was stunned, "… My parents."
The words came out spontaneously.
The scene was also slightly stunned, and then one or two couldn't help but laugh.
Sam was no exception. This kid was smart and cunning enough, but thinking about it carefully, he was honest, after all, he said he hadn't read the comics.
However, Sam was instead aroused with a little arrogance, "I mean comic book superheroes, even if you haven't read the comics, you should have heard of them, right?"
Anson didn't fall for it.
Anson shook his head gently, revealing a smile, "Then you should already know the answer. If you want outsiders who haven't read the comics to know, then it means that this superhero must be very, very famous."
"Very."
In 2000, the breakout superheroes were probably just those few, the DC trinity.
Anson spread his hands, "I don't think you would expect to hear those names in such an audition."
Was this… mockery?
Pfft.
Ian couldn't help but laugh out loud.
Anson looked at Sam, who was somewhat frustrated and surprised, his smile blooming, "Then, I'll leave first, let those unsaid words ferment on their own. I swear, I didn't say anything."
With a turn, he left without stopping—
Haha.
Hahaha!
Bursts of laughter erupted like thunder, and even the sound of hitting the table could be heard, and then, along with the re-closing of the door, everything was cut off inside.
Anson breathed a long sigh of relief. He wasn't sure how long the audition had lasted. It felt like three minutes or a week, unable to judge accurately. He took out his phone and looked at it, confirming that it was about twenty minutes.
Not long, but not short either.
This also meant that the audition times of the previous four competitors were not of reference value, because each person faced slightly different situations. The only consistent thing should be the lines of that monologue, and everything else depended on improvisation.
Therefore, judging the merits of performance based on the length of time would not be accurate.
Second update.
