From Flower Vase to Film Emperor in Hollywood
#463 - A moment of fragility
A kiss, yet no commitment sealed—
In the darkened theater, the audience knows Spider-Man is Peter, the bookish guy secretly in love with Mary Jane his whole life; however, Mary Jane doesn't know.
And then there's Harry.
Right, Harry, whose father is the Green Goblin, currently wreaking havoc and targeting Spider-Man, presenting a complex and intricate game before them.
The most dreaded scene still unfolded.
Spider-Man continues to play the role of New York's friendly neighborhood hero, helping out as much as possible. During a fire, he does his best to rescue a baby in swaddling clothes, and when he learns there are still people inside, he resolutely rushes back into the inferno, not realizing it's a trap set by the Green Goblin.
The Green Goblin needs an answer—
When Peter refuses, the Green Goblin launches an attack without hesitation, catching Peter off guard, causing him to scratch his left forearm.
Amidst the raging flames, Peter twists, turns, leaps, and bounds.
This scene is unlike any battle before, with slow-motion and close-ups interspersed within the dazzling camera work, pinning the entire audience to their seats, as if they can feel the scorching heatwave washing over them.
The immersive sense of presence causes quiet gasps to ripple through the theater.
After another arduous battle, Peter manages to escape before the fire completely explodes, leaving the Green Goblin in the ruins, engulfed by the raging flames.
Could it be?
Not at all.
The next shot is a close-up of Norman, covered in sweat and looking distraught. Norman, having removed his armor, is in a state of confusion, the line of reason between him and the Green Goblin gradually disappearing. Perhaps soon he will completely transform into the Green Goblin, losing all reason.
After the fire explosion, Norman goes to Peter and Harry's apartment to attend Thanksgiving dinner. Aunt May and Mary Jane are also present, and Harry is finally able to formally introduce Mary Jane to his father.
However, Norman scrutinizes Mary Jane with a critical and disdainful gaze. Clearly, he doesn't like this girl, believing Mary Jane is no different from other materialistic girls.
The dinner doesn't go smoothly, constantly permeated by an eerie, tense, and anxious atmosphere.
And Norman discovers—
He discovers the wound on Peter's left forearm.
Instantly, Norman recalls Peter's late arrival and the strange occurrences in the house earlier. The clues all connect, and the clever scientist completes the association.
Peter Parker is Spider-Man.
Hastily, Norman leaves the dinner. Harry chases after him, trying to salvage the situation with his father, but Norman doesn't care. Standing outside the door, he harshly criticizes Mary Jane, and Harry stands before his father, unable to resist, unable to utter a single word.
Those words all enter the house, heard by everyone.
Mary Jane leaves the house, heartbroken. Harry still doesn't defend her, instead venting all his frustration and repression onto Mary Jane.
The dinner ends on an unhappy note.
Norman leaves in a hurry because he senses the violence within him stirring, realizing that Peter is Spider-Man, he almost acted directly. If he didn't turn and leave, he might have lost control on the spot.
After returning home, Norman tries to suppress himself, to control himself. He is struggling and fighting with the Green Goblin in his head, but ultimately fails, and the evil Green Goblin once again takes control of Norman.
So, late at night, the Green Goblin finds Aunt May, issuing a life threat, warning Peter in this way—
If he doesn't cooperate, the next time will be more than this.
Aunt May isn't injured, but she is frightened, lying in bed, screaming in terror.
"Those terrifying yellow eyes…"
"Those terrifying yellow eyes!"
Seeing this, Peter thinks carefully and immediately realizes, "He knows who I am!"
Peter can't sleep all night, and he falls into a struggle again.
The identity of "Spider-Man," this superpower, is dragging him into a storm. If he continues to insist on being himself, the people around him may be hurt, first Uncle Ben, now Aunt May, so what's next?
But if he bows his head and compromises with the Green Goblin, does this mean that more innocent lives may be harmed?
Peter struggles bitterly.
In reality, he is just a child, having just graduated from high school and entered society, worried about his job, and his heart fluttering because of a girl's glance. He simply wants to use his superpowers to help, but now he must face the cruel choices of the real world.
So, what should he do?
The next day.
Peter is still guarding in the hospital room, not expecting Mary Jane to come to visit.
They chat, and Mary Jane mentions that she seems to have a crush on Spider-Man, but she feels it's absurd, being preoccupied with a stranger she's never met. Peter quickly tells her not to worry.
Peter pretends to "know" Spider-Man and has mentioned Mary Jane to Spider-Man. Mary Jane asks Peter anxiously what he said.
Peter gazes at Mary Jane, mustering courage for the first time in his life.
"I said."
"Spider-Man, Mary Jane's greatest strength is that when you look into her eyes, and she looks back at you, everything… becomes special."
"Because you feel stronger, but also more fragile; because you feel excited, but also afraid."
"The truth is, you don't even know what that feeling is, you just know what kind of person you want to be."
"It's like completing an unattainable dream, but not being prepared at all."
Calm, gentle, yet resilient.
Mary Jane quietly gazes at Peter. She is stunned because Peter's words truly see her reality, her hidden embarrassment and fragility, yet displayed before Peter without reservation, but Peter doesn't laugh or belittle, only silently guarding by her side.
For the first time, Mary Jane truly sees Peter for who he is.
A touch of emotion appears in Mary Jane's eyes.
But.
Gloria's gaze is completely unable to leave Peter—
Those clear and bright eyes, like the starry sky, gentle and serene, quietly hiding those bitterness and pain, surging and boiling emotions in the night, the vast and deep universe makes people can't help but want to explore deeply.
Mary Jane sees herself in Peter's eyes, and Peter also sees himself in Mary Jane's eyes.
No one knows what the future holds. He possesses the abilities he has dreamed of, but he is not prepared. Choices and problems stand before him, and he has no answers; the only thing he knows is what kind of person he wants to be, which is also the last thing Uncle Ben taught him.
So, he knows what he should do.
Although difficult, although confused, he has already chosen his path.
As the Green Goblin said, they have all made their choices and will continue to carry this burden forward.
A touch of determination appears in those deep blue eyes.
