#103 - King's Drawing Paper
Chapter 103: The King's Canvas
“Your Majesty, what are you going to do with so many people?”
Tyrion asked sincerely.
After a whole day of busy work yesterday, with the joint efforts of 20,000 soldiers and thousands of monks, nuns, scribes, and others, the cleanup of King's Landing has achieved great success.
As of now, a total of 523,426 people have been registered.
Among them, nearly 30,000 people were temporarily detained for various reasons, more than 1,000 rebels went to hell, and 31 soldiers returned to heaven.
These have already been reported in the first half of the Small Council meeting just now.
What should be done next?
All the ministers quietly looked at His Majesty the King at the end of the long table.
Joffrey's gaze was fixed on the model of King's Landing on the long table in front of him, “Tyrion, what is the total area of the confiscated properties and land? Adding what the royal family originally had, does it account for half of King's Landing?”
Tyrion was stunned for a moment, and then quickly calculated in his brain.
According to the latest measurement by the research department, in terms of the newly defined unit of measurement, the total area of King's Landing is about 71 square kilometers.
Now, more than 300 brothels, more than 600 taverns and hotels, more than 800 shops, more than 1,000 warehouses, more than 3,000 residences, almost the entire Flea Bottom have been confiscated, plus the royal family and the Lannisters' original properties, streets, squares, open spaces, and ruins.
“Well, about half of half. Your Majesty, King's Landing still has 500,000 people after all.” Tyrion didn't understand what Joffrey meant.
Could it be that the king is still not satisfied?
Yesterday's actions had already shocked and worried Tyrion to the point of sleeplessness all night.
He thought he was decisive enough, but who knew the other teams were even more ruthless. Those team leaders, squad leaders, and scribes only had the king's orders in their eyes and completely ignored the demands of the major forces.
Last night, Tyrion held the thick cleanup account book, and both hands were constantly shaking.
The king's claws were too capable. All properties and contracts with unclear ownership were invalidated, all wealth and materials of unknown origin were confiscated, and all people of suspicious origin or idle people were arrested.
From the dense text, Tyrion clearly saw the shadow industries, contact points, and spokespersons of many families.
Too reckless, too arrogant.
Tyrion knew very well that King's Landing never belonged to any one person or any one family.
Long before the Baratheon family moved into the Red Keep, the powerful nobles of the Seven Kingdoms and even across the Narrow Sea had taken root in King's Landing, secretly controlling countless industries and recruiting countless people.
Countless powerful forces jointly wove a complex and tight network in King's Landing.
Of course, the newly forged 20,000 swords could certainly cut off everything forcefully. But what about in the areas that swords can't reach? What about outside King's Landing?
What about the commerce of King's Landing?
Once the supplies sent by the port and roads are insufficient, how will the city operate?
Tyrion stared blankly at the king's calm face, his chest feeling as heavy as if a large piece of granite was pressed on it. Joffrey, what are you thinking?
Joffrey's idea was very simple, “Then continue to cleanse until half of King's Landing is cleaned up.”
Pointing to the model of King's Landing on the long table, Joffrey drew a line in the middle from the air, “East of the Central Square, this half of the city must be cleared. By the will of the gods, I will paint here, painting a clean and brand-new holy city.”
All the ministers' eyes were cast on the exquisite city model.
The king's voice was still calm, “Everyone who participated in the cleanup yesterday will be rewarded with a silver stag. Rest today, and continue the cleanup from tomorrow. Block off one hundred grids every day, and the soldiers will be divided into two groups to take turns, led by Tyrion and Arryn.”
Arryn respectfully accepted the order.
Tyrion really didn't want to hear his name. More than 10,000 people every day, only checking one-eighth of the city, presumably he will completely offend many people again.
The king knocked on the table, “Tyrion is in charge. Any methods such as industrial replacement and redemption are acceptable. I only want a blank and clean eastern half of the city. Before that, the city gates will continue to be closed. Except for fishermen, farmers, peddlers, coachmen, etc. who supply materials to the city, entry is allowed but exit is not.”
Tyrion understood what the king meant.
It turned out that Joffrey was not greedy enough to only take in and not give out. He could use the properties and gold dragons in the western city to exchange for the eastern city. Although it was still difficult, it was easier for people to accept than just using swords to plunder.
“Tyrion?” The king looked over with a smile, “What do you think? Are there any difficulties?”
“As you command.” Tyrion bowed.
Joffrey looked around at everyone, “In order for King's Landing to transform into a holy city favored by the gods, not only the common people, but we must also embrace change.”
All the ministers immediately sat up straight, waiting for the king's instructions.
Joffrey first looked at the elderly Grand Maester Pycelle, “The maesters and apprentices under the national preceptor should also have a formal title. We can't just keep it vague like this. We can't let them just silently contribute to the kingdom.”
“Your Majesty is so concerned, it is really, really touching.” The Grand Maester excitedly wiped the tears from the corners of his eyes.
Joffrey smiled slightly, “The Ministry of Education. To educate the world for the gods, to dispel ignorance, and to spread knowledge, it should be the belonging and duty of the maesters. Please, National Preceptor, make a register as soon as possible, and be sure not to miss a single person.”
“Please rest assured, Your Majesty, it will be completed within half a month.” The Grand Maester vowed.
Joffrey turned to Tyrion, “I know that your task is arduous, and finance and cleanup are not easy tasks. What are the difficulties? Feel free to mention them.”
Tyrion wasn't that naive, “I will listen to Your Majesty's orders.”
Joffrey pondered for a moment, then looked at the proud Kingslayer, “Ser Jaime, the Ministry of Finance bears a heavy mission and undoubtedly needs a stronger force. Allocate four thousand new soldiers to form the 'Investigative Team' under the Ministry of Finance.”
Lord Commander of the Kingsguard Jaime glanced at his short brother, “Yes, Your Majesty.”
Joffrey looked at Arryn again, “You and Tyrion should communicate well, and distinguish your subordinates clearly. Little birds and the new soldiers assigned to you will belong to the Security Bureau, and Tyrion's people will belong to the 'Kingdom Statistics Bureau' under the Ministry of Finance.”
“Don't call it the Master of Whisperers anymore,” Joffrey gave Arryn an encouraging look, “Just call it the Minister of Security and manage the Security Department.”
Arryn bowed excitedly to accept the order, “Thank you for your Majesty's grace!”
Tyrion watched quietly. In just a moment, he had four thousand more people under his command, as well as the brand-new title of Investigative Team and Kingdom Statistics Bureau.
“Ser Barristan,” Joffrey looked at the spirited Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, “To this day, Aegon II died from poisoned wine, the Mad King Aerys died from swords, and there was also my father who was attacked by beasts. Don't you think the strength of the Kingsguard is too weak?”
Kingslayer Jaime's face immediately turned cold.
Barristan Selmy knelt down on one knee in shame, “I cannot make any excuses for myself, please punish me!”
Joffrey got up and helped Barristan up, “I have no intention of doing so. It's just that seven Kingsguard are not enough to deal with the threat. From today onwards, the Kingsguard will be set at seventy-seven people. You are still the Lord Commander, and the other six Kingsguard will be in charge of a team, taking turns to guard.”
“Lord Commander Barristan, do you agree?”
The king had even used the deaths of the previous kings as examples, what else could Barristan say, “I obey your will.”
Joffrey looked at Tyrion again, “As for the 30,000 people who are locked up…”
