Chapter 183: The Lannister Lion

“An interesting riddle.”

After listening to Littlefinger's explanation, Tyrion thoughtfully offered his evaluation.

“Why don’t we try guessing as well?”

Tyrion looked to the two people on his left, “Uncle Kevan, Jaime.”

Joffrey watched the little interlude below with interest, not saying a word to stop it, as if he were happy to see it happen.

Lord Commander Jaime Lannister was an old acquaintance.

Joffrey's gaze mainly focused on Kevan. Lord of the Navy, commanding the twenty thousand strong allied forces, Kevan Lannister.

Duke Tywin's brother had a very amiable temperament.

His face was plump, his head was mostly bald, his beard was trimmed short, his shoulders were round and his waist thick, his skin was delicate, his beard and hair were golden, giving off the image of a well-cared-for and honest man.

If he were to be called a lion, then he would be a good lion that guarded the home and never rebelled.

Especially towards his brother Tywin.

Fortunately, Duke Tywin's support was quite firm, and Kevan completely obeyed the royal family's arrangements.

Kevan did not reveal the slightest intention to seize control of the naval fleet, and the twenty-five thousand men he brought had smoothly accepted the implantation of the Grace Core, and five thousand cavalrymen were assigned to the jurisdiction of the Army.

This lion was very docile, and King's Landing was able to relatively easily accommodate it, gaining powerful assistance.

Currently, within King's Landing alone, there were the twenty thousand allied forces led by Kevan, the eighteen thousand men under Jaime, and the five thousand members of the City Watch managed by Tyrion, totaling forty-three thousand armed troops.

This was not even counting other scattered guards, attendants, or personnel not belonging to the military establishment.

Wasn't it too wasteful to only use such a large force for defense? Moreover, the enemy was close at hand, with the twenty thousand men from the Reach stationed in Stonebridge, just over two hundred kilometers from King's Landing, a mere day or two for cavalry.

The question was, who should go?

Joffrey looked at the people below, deciding to listen to their answers.

“I think,” Tyrion focused on pondering the riddle, not intending to mix in anything else, “it depends on the mercenary. After all, he holds a sword in his hand, while in the riddle, the other three only have identities, and no power.”

Joffrey nodded slightly, looking at Kevan Lannister.

Kevan hesitated for a moment, then bowed and replied, “If the mercenary is smart, he will definitely obey the king and kill the other two. If he is greedy and foolish, he might be tempted by the merchant's money, leading to disaster.”

Not much different from Tyrion's answer, just phrased differently.

“Uncle Jaime, what do you think?”

“Kingslayer” Jaime, clad in gleaming white armor, smiled lightly, “In my opinion, the mercenary, the monk, and the merchant will all die.”

Everyone's gaze simultaneously turned to Jaime.

Jaime raised his head to meet the king's gaze, “Can the mercenary's sword withstand the divine power that the king receives from the gods? The mercenary who thought he controlled everything would naturally only meet with destruction.”

Joffrey nodded, seemingly very satisfied.

Tyrion curled his lip, as expected, it was a complex riddle, what mercenary and king, wasn't it just saying that Renly's army was not as good as the Holy War army? How boring.

Kevan frowned.

Varys silently thought, perhaps the mercenary was not only referring to Renly, but also to more enemies, and potential enemies…

But Joffrey did not immediately announce the result, but looked at Littlefinger again.

“You're the only one left who hasn't answered.”

Littlefinger respectfully responded, using this time to quickly recall everything that had just happened, the answers of the others, and the king's reaction.

What was the answer?

Had anyone answered correctly? Was the answer unique?

Pardon, pardon, par…

A burst of brilliance suddenly erupted in his eyes, then he swayed his body.

Pa~ Da~

Littlefinger tilted forward, face down, the wooden box collapsed backward, colliding with the stone slab.

“Your Majesty, no one will die!”

Littlefinger maintained a prostrate posture: “The three of them did offend the king, but would the great and selfless king care about this insignificant disturbance? The king's heart holds the entire kingdom!”

Tyrion immediately turned his head to look at Joffrey on the Iron Throne, the king's expression was indistinguishable.

Littlefinger's voice became more and more firm, “The monk can appease the people for the king, the merchant can make the kingdom prosperous and provide money, and the mercenary can fight for the king, dealing with various enemies. They can all be the wealth of the kingdom.”

“So, my answer is: the king will forgive their sins, order them to offer their loyalty, and serve the country. Of course, there is only one chance.”

Dong! Dong! Dong!

Littlefinger frantically banged his head against the hard stone slab, the bright red floor tiles seemed to become even redder.

“Please give me a chance, Your Majesty!”

“Please forgive me, Your Majesty!”

“Your Majesty! I am willing to be your mercenary, merchant, monk, farmer, messenger, follower, anything! I only ask that you grant me a pardon!”

Varys stared in shock at the sudden change in the scene, until now, he finally woke up!

“Your Majesty~” Varys collapsed to the ground with a mournful cry, imitating Littlefinger's appearance and begging for mercy, “Please forgive this humble one, Varys will never dare to do it again!”

“……”

The two people's pleas echoed continuously in the empty hall, one louder and more intense than the other, vowing to overwhelm the other and win the king's favor.

The three Lannisters next to them did not know how to react for a moment. Wasn't today a war meeting?

“Stop it, both of you.” Joffrey softly stopped them.

The two immediately stopped speaking, lying motionless on the ground, awaiting the king's judgment.

Joffrey sighed.

“Actually, neither of your answers are good enough.”

Littlefinger and Varys immediately felt dizzy, despair and pain attacked at the same time, causing them to close their eyes tightly, almost fainting.

“King, monk, merchant, mercenary.”

Joffrey smiled, “These are just one side of the same person, like the Seven Gods as one body but possessing seven incarnations, or even more.”

Magic revives, and power belongs to oneself.

Power, worship, money, and force, who says these cannot be concentrated on one person?

Joffrey glanced at everyone.

“You say, am I a king? A mercenary? Or which identity?”

No one could give an answer immediately.

So he asked and answered himself, “I am me, the king is not my only side, nor is it the most important side, my soul is the true me.”

Faced with the “prosthetic body” on the Iron Throne, no one could refute.

“Back to the riddle.” Joffrey gave the answer, “As incarnations of the same status, of course they will not die, it is just a game.”

“Petyr.”

Littlefinger barely wriggled his body to show his respect.

“Your answer is the closest. Although the explanation later is not correct. But…”

Littlefinger's eyes widened, rekindling his desire.

“You are pardoned.”

The light words quickly dissipated in the air.

But Littlefinger was already covered in tears, kowtowing heavily on the ground, his lips trembling uncontrollably: “Thank you, Your Majesty!”

Varys completely collapsed, as if he had become a corpse.

Joffrey made a decision, “Lord Kevan, Lord Jaime, each of you lead six thousand cavalrymen, with three hundred crystal cannons, to raid Stonebridge!”

“Yes, Your Majesty.” The two lions, one big and one small, answered at the same time.

“Petyr will go with you.”

“Remember, forgiveness, but only once…”

The drawn-out ending gradually faded.

Everyone looked up, the king on the Iron Throne had quietly closed his eyes.

Forgiveness.
