Game of Thrones: I Created the Magic Web
#218 - Choice
The bustling castle was filled with peace.
People in armor, linen, and silk moved back and forth on the hill and surrounding meadows, either busy or content.
Iron forks, wooden sticks, and stone pots were set up in front of the tents, with charcoal fires burning.
People were looking forward to dinner.
Looking further out, the road connecting the castle to the outside world, originally only wide enough for two people, now had the trees on both sides felled, turned into firewood, tent supports, materials for building various contraptions, and boards for paving the ground.
The new road was four or five times wider than the original.
The almost non-stop trampling and crushing had also made this road increasingly dense and hard, barren of grass, like an old road of many years.
At this moment.
Heavy and continuous streams of carriages and horses were still traveling on the road, heading south, towards Renly outside Storm's End.
They were still loyal to the "King."
No one knew that Renly no longer needed these supplies.
And Stonegarden had already been surrounded by two thousand men.
It arrived last night, so why not attack earlier? Why wait until Storm's End was finished?
Jon Snow had his reasons.
And so, two hours after the end of the Battle of Storm's End, the Security Bureau, with available manpower, updated him with the latest intelligence about Stonegarden.
Stonegarden had completely lost its secrets or unknowns.
With such operational conditions, it could be considered the most foolproof time to start the war.
Intelligence first.
Jon Snow had learned a lot from the battle examples provided by the light screen.
The wars of the past were already in the past, and the wars of the present were the real future: intelligence, equipment, planning, rather than luck, conspiracy, or attrition.
It was time to begin.
After ordering the assembly of the artillery and the correction of the direction, Jon Snow shared the intelligence with the vanguard—Ser Hart Fell.
After reading the information, Hart Fell understood that it was time to make a choice.
Stonegarden.
This castle had become the end point of the supply line for Renly's army.
The once quiet town was now overcrowded, with as many as sixty thousand merchants, laborers, and others, countless supplies and baggage, and a garrison of more than four thousand six hundred men.
And presiding over the situation in Stonegarden was his dear uncle, Earl Haywood Fell.
Yes, uncle.
Hart Fell's father was Haywood Fell's elder brother, but unfortunately, he died young.
When the grandfather was seriously ill, this eldest grandson was not yet sensible, just over one year old.
It was said that he also contracted a serious illness and would probably not live long.
Even so, according to ancient tradition and legal order of succession, as long as he was still alive, even if he was just a baby, even if he was foolish and paralyzed, the new Earl would undoubtedly be him.
But in the end, the Fell family's fief and title fell into the hands of his uncle.
Obviously, not many people were determined to stand up for this baby and argue on his behalf.
His father had only been dead for half a year.
Why?
Hart Fell later faintly realized that, at that time, his father's confidants had been dealt with or assimilated almost completely.
Earl Haywood Fell's methods were quite remarkable.
But no matter what, within half a year, the heir and the Earl of Stonegarden had died one after another, and the uncle had indecently seized the legitimate rights of his nephew, who was still in swaddling clothes.
Such a major change obviously could not make everyone shut up quietly.
Many rumors arose because of this.
After growing up, Hart Fell never took the initiative to inquire about any news.
But he also knew.
People secretly speculated that the deaths of the old Earl and his son were both the work of Haywood Fell, for the glory and status he should not have obtained.
And in those days when Earl Haywood was newly enthroned, there were indeed unusually frequent personnel changes.
But this could not be considered evidence of any crime at all.
Many Earls had similar actions, just to promote their confidants.
Could it be that everyone was plotting to usurp the throne?
Rumors are just rumors after all.
His uncle's rule was calm and stable, Stonegarden developed well, and the family, like the past millennia, was stable and rich, slowly accumulating glory and reputation.
Hart Fell grew up safely and quietly, and was personally knighted by his uncle.
Over the years, no one deliberately made things difficult for him or ridiculed him, and he never mentioned his so-called "inheritance rights."
The Fell family was harmonious and friendly.
A loving family.
Putting aside those nonsensical rumors, Hart Fell was very satisfied with his situation.
With the name of "Ser," countless grand events would open their arms to him throughout the Seven Kingdoms.
Fine wine, delicacies, soft beds, cheers, worship, and the favor of young girls—the wonderful things that countless people sought were just his daily life.
He would also make friends with various knights, receive courtesy and hospitality from lords everywhere, and have the honor of meeting the noble King and Queen.
When he was in his twenties, after making a name for himself and growing a beard.
His uncle would arrange a marriage for him.
He would marry a noble wife of equally distinguished birth.
She would raise their children, teaching them by example, so that they would become respectable nobles.
He would also have wonderful encounters with commoner women from all over, and if he was lucky or unlucky enough, many illegitimate children would be born.
He might remember their mothers, or he might not.
When these little guys grew up, they might come to his door crying and begging, making a fuss, asking him to recognize them and take care of them.
At this time, he would also be an adult in his forties or fifties.
Tired of playing, he decided to return to the family.
His uncle would probably be full of white hair.
He would be granted a territory commensurate with a knight by his uncle—one or two towns.
He would spend his old age in his own territory.
His children would continue his honor, inherit the title, be knighted, or marry into various noble families.
Many years later, a descendant would achieve greater glory, win promotion, and turn the branch passed down by Ser Hart Fell into a Baron, Earl, or even a Duke.
He would be satisfied.
Everything should have developed like this.
But things completely went on a different path in the second step.
War broke out!
Duke Renly was crowned King and declared war on King Joffrey and the Lannister family on the Iron Throne!
Stonegarden had to make a choice.
Liege lord, or King?
His uncle chose the liege lord of the Stormlands and the legitimate King, His Majesty Renly.
Hart Fell had no choice either.
He could only be drawn into the war, whether he was excited and expectant, or apprehensive and fearful.
All he could do was fight bravely and strive for victory.
Perhaps he would make great contributions?
But that night at Massey's Hook shattered his illusions.
King Joffrey, blessed by the gods, was winning steadily, and King Renly and many lords were entering the abyss.
Now.
Hart Fell finally had a chance to choose.
He could take revenge.
Boom—
Thunder rumbled in the sky over Stonegarden.
Artillery fire shattered the hard stones, leveled the works, broke the roads, and destroyed the armory…
Divine punishment!?
Everyone in the castle couldn't help but tremble in fear.
"I am Hart Fell! Haywood Fell murdered his own father and brother, usurping the title, which is intolerable to the gods! Storm's End has ended, and Renly's rebellion has completely failed! In the name of the Earl of Stonegarden, everyone lay down your weapons! Otherwise…"
Someone recognized this voice.
The terrifying explosions continued, getting closer and closer to the crowd.
"Long live King Joffrey!"
The first person to unfasten his armor and kneel down was a recruited recruit.
And then the whole city…
