Chapter 157: Nonsense
(A quick note: The website just sent a message saying the novel will be available for purchase tomorrow at 12 PM. This was unexpected; I originally planned for it to be next week. It seems the editor made a mistake, but there's nothing I can do about it. So, I'll post two chapters before 12 PM tomorrow, and the remaining chapter will be posted in the evening.)
Night stealthily infiltrated the town without any major incidents. He didn't seize the opportunity to assassinate those few bastards behind him because he remembered his mission and didn't want to waste time on such matters. However, he didn't consider that the whole situation could have been resolved with just a single silver coin, avoiding such a significant disturbance.
Emerging from the shadows in a dark corner of the town through Shadow Leap, Night felt somewhat lost, facing an unfamiliar environment and unfamiliar people.
"Sir, do you need anything?"
A goblin emerged from an alley, greeting Night with a friendly smile.
"Get lost!!"
The sight of the goblin's face filled Night with irritation and disgust, prompting him to roar, scaring the goblin away. The goblin muttered as he fled: "What's with this guy? So fierce!"
Leaving the dark alley and entering the open road, Night was astonished by the dense rows of houses and the bustling crowds. Eventually, he stopped a passing kobold child, put on what he thought was a friendly smile, and asked, "Little one, do you know where the Kobold Tavern is?"
The kobold child wasn't very old, probably around 7-8 years old. Hearing Night's question, his eyes darted around before he gave a sly smile and said, "Uncle, I'll take you to the Kobold Tavern if you buy me a steak?"
"Steak? What's that?"
Night looked bewildered.
"It's the Kobold Tavern's specialty, and it's delicious!"
The little kobold replied innocently.
"Alright."
Night figured that since he was asking for directions and the destination was also his goal, agreeing to the little kobold's request wouldn't be a problem.
"Uncle, follow me!"
Hearing Night's affirmative answer, the little kobold was overjoyed, almost drooling at the corner of his mouth. He hopped and skipped, leading Night towards the location of the tavern.
After turning several streets and walking for more than ten minutes, the little kobold finally led Night to his destination. Above the tavern entrance hung a vivid sign of a kobold raising a wooden cup. Just as Night was about to enter with the little kobold, the door was pushed open from the inside, and a large goblin, clearly intoxicated, stumbled out. He bumped into Night's chest, almost causing Night to stumble back.
"Are you blind? Watch where you're going!!"
Night hadn't even gotten angry yet, but the goblin who bumped into him was already causing trouble, scolding him.
"Are you freaking crazy?"
Night wasn't one to back down, and he immediately retorted. Their argument attracted a kobold from inside the tavern, who quickly tried to mediate: "I'm sorry, I'm sorry. This greenskin is drunk. Please forgive him, sir."
"Feller, you bastard, you always cause trouble when you're drunk! Wait till I get back, and I'll tell your mother on you!!"
As he spoke, the kobold supported the goblin and led him onto the wide road.
Looking at this mismatched pair, Night didn't know whether to say that the kobold was degrading himself or that the world had gone crazy. Finally, after glaring at their backs, he entered the tavern with the little kobold's urging.
"Welcome!"
Facing the entrance hall was a long, high table. A dark elf, who was idly wiping the tabletop with a cloth, greeted them with a sweet and crisp voice. It was Night's first time seeing a dark elf, and although his aesthetic preferences still leaned towards his own kind, he was struck by the pair of large, voluptuous breasts, the slender waist, and the captivating face of the dark elf. He felt a softness he had never experienced before.
"Um, um, I'm looking for someone, a kobold named Nonsense."
Night spoke stammeringly, but his eyes darted around, not daring to look at the female dark elf again. He didn't know when, but a red blush had appeared on his face.
"Hehe."
The dark elf waitress giggled, and the cloth in her hand seemed to brush against Night's body unintentionally. As a fragrant breeze wafted over, Night's hand felt as if it had been lightly scratched by the tip of her finger. Night recoiled as if stung by a bee, pulling his hand back from the bar and sitting down obediently, no longer speaking.
"Oh, you're looking for the boss. Wait a moment, and I'll go get him for you."
After teasing the kobold who looked like a newbie, the waitress swayed her hips and entered the doorway behind the bar. Then, faint shouts could be heard from the back.
"Uncle, what about the steak you promised me?"
Just as Night was wondering what to do, the little kobold at his feet tugged at his clothes, complaining.
"Oh, right. After that sister comes out, I'll ask her for you."
Night finally regained his composure and spoke gently to the little kobold. At the same time, he scanned his surroundings again. Only then did he realize that there were many people in the tavern, but most of them were sitting in secluded corners, and their voices were unusually low. Trolls, kobolds, gnolls, goblins, and even ogres—Night had seen these humanoid species in the wilderness. Even elves, dwarves, and orcs, which Night had never seen before, were also present.
They sat together in small groups, whispering to each other, occasionally clinking glasses, but more often than not, they cast their gazes towards the entrance and Night, who was sitting at the bar.
"Who's looking for me?"
A wizened kobold face, supported by a cane, appeared behind the bar. The kobold had a black eye patch over one eye socket, and the remaining eye appeared cloudy, with signs of moisture at the corner.
"Young man, are you looking for me?"
Although his eyesight seemed poor, everyone in the tavern knew that beneath this old and peaceful facade, Nonsense was actually a ruthless and shrewd individual.
"I come from the Shattered Bone Tribe. Our elder, Shatterer, sends his regards."
Night had received instructions from Shatterer before coming. Now, facing Nonsense, he did not neglect his manners because the other party looked weak. He respectfully greeted Nonsense with a junior's etiquette, earning Nonsense's favor. However, what the other party said made Night unsure how to respond.
"Oh? So that bastard Shatterer is still alive?"
"Uh…"
Night's anger flashed for a moment. Thinking about the matter he was about to ask Nonsense to handle, he had to suppress his feelings and try to soften his tone, saying, "Our elder is doing well. He eats three pounds of meat every day!"
"That old thing is living comfortably."
Perhaps because he had a good relationship with Shatterer, Nonsense now looked at Night with interest, and the Serpent's Kiss at Night's waist was imprinted in his eyes. He nodded almost imperceptibly.
"But knowing that bastard, he wouldn't have sent you to find me unless there was something important. Tell me, what do you need my help with?"
Originally, after Nonsense appeared, the gazes in the tavern had subconsciously focused on the bar, and all ears were perked up, trying to hear the conversation as soon as possible. But when they heard that the visitor was just an acquaintance of Nonsense, everyone's interest waned a bit. However, when Nonsense said this, the gazes that had just dispersed gathered again.
"The elder wants me to post two tasks with you."
Night looked at the gazes around him, feeling somewhat uncomfortable, but thinking of Allen's departing team, he lowered his voice and leaned closer to Nonsense, saying.
"One is an assassination mission. The target is a green-skinned bear goblin who has advanced to Berserker. He is currently leading a team towards the Thornburg of the Elven Kingdom. The team consists of about 15 goblin warriors…"
"The other is a retrieval mission. The target is a blood sample carried by that bear goblin…"
As he spoke, Night took out the three sapphire gemstones that Shatterer had given him from his pocket and placed them on the bar in plain sight.
"This is the reward for the two tasks. The reward for the assassination mission is two sapphires, and the reward for the retrieval mission is one sapphire."
Before he could finish speaking, various people who had been hiding in the dark corners rushed over, grabbing Night's clothes and shouting loudly, "Leave this to our team, we'll definitely get it done for you!!"
"Get out of here, Scarface! With your pathetic skills, you want to take on an assassination mission??"
"Brother, you have to leave this to us. Our captain is a level 4 Berserker, his strength is absolutely formidable, taking down a greenskin is no problem!!"
The sudden commotion startled Night, and he was almost about to draw his weapon. Even the little kobold who had led him here was nowhere to be seen, saving him the cost of a steak.
"Everyone, settle down! If you want to take on a task, follow the procedure! Get out!!!"
Finally, Nonsense couldn't stand it anymore and shouted, and the scene immediately quieted down. The crowd reluctantly returned to their seats under the gaze of Nonsense's one eye.
