“…Actually, when I first accepted the mission, I didn’t expect it to be you guys!! Really, I’m not lying to you. If I had known it was you, even if the reward for the mission was incredibly generous, I probably wouldn’t have been tempted.”
Since he had been exposed by Allen, Jack had nothing to hide. He immediately explained the entire process of accepting the mission in detail.
As a native of Thunder Town, Jack, the Shadow Walker, naturally had many informants in the town. The kobold who led Ye was one of Jack's informants. Although, given Jack's style of doing things, he wouldn't take on dangerous assassination missions, finding items was almost a piece of cake for him.
You should know that the Thief, the initial class of a Shadow Walker, is not just for show. The vast majority of gifted individuals who awakened shadow energy are called Thieves because they use their awakened abilities for things like theft. Jack was no exception. Living as an orphan in the discriminated-against kobold town, he had naturally done his fair share of stealing chickens and dogs. Therefore, finding things for him was nothing more than stealing; he didn't necessarily have to kill the target to succeed.
What Jack didn't expect was that the target of this mission was actually Allen, the hobgoblin, with whom he had some interaction and even a bit of affection.
Originally, Jack was worried about how to sneak into the target’s vicinity without being discovered. However, after catching up with Allen's team, he was overjoyed when he saw Allen's face, and the problem of sneaking close to steal was easily solved.
What happened after that was what Allen had already seen. Jack didn't need to elaborate; Allen himself was well aware.
“So, the missions posted by them are all related to me?”
Allen frowned.
“Yes, I was also afraid that you would go out today and sell these two glass bottles, so I invited you for a drink, planning to get you drunk and then get my hands on the items. But don't worry, I really didn't participate in the mission to assassinate you. Otherwise, I would have acted just now.”
Jack nodded and explained to Allen.
“Hmph, you should be glad you didn't have the thought of killing me, otherwise you would already be a corpse now!!”
Allen glared at Jack contemptuously. If Jack had made any moves that were unfavorable to him at that time, this goblin wouldn't be alive and kicking now. At the same time, Allen scanned Jack with his malicious eyes and questioned him.
“But this matter isn't over. Tell me, how do you want to settle it?”
“I, I, I, I’ll stay and help you teach little Irene, until you return to Thunder Town. I won't take any reward, and I'll pass on all my skills to her, how about that?”
If he really wanted to escape, Jack might not be without hope, but the confined environment was, frankly speaking, very unfavorable to Jack, and the risks outweighed the opportunities. Therefore, Jack softened his tone and offered what he thought was the best way to repay.
“You said that, I didn’t force you!”
Allen's fierce eyes gradually disappeared, and then he put on a friendly smile again.
“If you run away halfway, I know where your home is, oh~~”
The syllable 'oh' was drawn out for a long time, and the implication made the expression on Jack's face change again and again. He repeatedly shook his head and said, “How could I do such a thing? I, Jack, will do what I promise you.”
“That's good. It's getting late, let's go to sleep first. We still have a lot to do tomorrow.”
Allen nodded with satisfaction, then stretched lazily and occupied most of the bed. When Jack reluctantly came back to his senses and wanted to squeeze in with Allen, he was dismissed by Allen's words and didn't dare to argue with Allen for the bed: “I'm used to sleeping alone, you should find another place to make do.”
“……”
Looking at the simple furnishings in the room, Jack pitifully found two long benches and put them together, and endured the night by lying hard on them.
The next day, Allen gave the people in the tribe a day off, and then let the free laborer Jack take them around the city to see the prosperity of the outside world. Allen himself, holding a little goblin in each arm, took Irene and Cole to the dark alleys of the North City, familiar with the route, to see an old man.
“Hello, welcome.”
Deep in the dark alley, the slave merchant guild with a shackle sign welcomed a guest. A human clerk greeted him with a warm smile.
“Hello, I would like to ask, is Phi Locke from your guild here?”
Allen held the two curious little babies and signaled them to be quiet, then asked.
“Ah, sir, do you know Master Phi Locke from our guild?”
The human clerk asked in surprise.
“Yes, the master has been kind to me. I brought some specialties for this visit, preparing to give them to the master.”
Allen nodded. Although the other party might have forgotten him, he kept the kindness that the other party had given him firmly in his heart. If the other party hadn't forcefully sold those human artisans to him, the people of the Green Field Tribe might still be starving.
“You're really lucky. The master happens to be on duty in the store today. Shall I go and ask him for you?”
When the human clerk saw that Allen was related to their guild's chief appraiser, he became even more enthusiastic in his reception.
“May I ask what your name is, guest?”
“Just tell the master that Allen Witt from the Green Field Hobgoblin Tribe has come to thank him for his kindness in recommending human slaves that day.”
Allen was a little uneasy. Whether Phi Locke remembered him was a question. After all, he was the chief appraiser of the slave merchant guild, and he was just a hobgoblin they met by chance.
“Ah, so it's you, guest! I was wondering why you looked a little familiar!”
“Please wait a moment, guest, I'll be right back.”
The human clerk was reminded by Allen and immediately remembered. After carefully looking at Allen's face, he did look a bit familiar, and then he hurried to the second floor to report to Phi Locke.
Without making Allen wait long, the sound of footsteps “step, step, step” came from the wooden stairwell. Allen suddenly felt a little nervous. Allen came to visit Phi Locke with anticipation, because he needed the help of this goblin elder to provide the talents needed for the future development of the tribe.
“Oh, it's you, little fellow, what? Have you changed careers to taking care of children?”
In the end, Master Phi Locke still did not disappoint Allen. After the human clerk Sam reported, he came down from the second floor where he was on duty. Seeing Allen, Master Phi Locke's expression was still calm and indifferent, but when he noticed the two well-behaved little goblins in Allen's hands, a bit of warmth appeared in his eyes, and then he instantly returned to indifference.
