#176 - Going Separately
Chapter 176: Splitting Up (Bonus chapter to thank all the book friends who have been voting for me. Your support is what keeps me writing even though I'm sure it's a flop. Thank you all.)
Allen was packing his luggage in his room, because he didn't know how many ambushes he would encounter along the way, so in addition to the necessary items, he didn't plan to bring anything else.
"Two Lightweight scrolls, three Vine Technique scrolls, two Minor Healing scrolls, five bottles of healing potions, two bottles of antidote... These things should be enough for me to use in several battles, right?"
The wilderness fighting style is unrestrained and crude, and cannot be compared with the fighting style of the civilized world. Therefore, Allen can only target Jack, who has survived between the wilderness and the civilized world, as the object of his consultation. At least he knows more than Allen.
Regis and his mercenary team can use a few scrolls in suitable terrain to kill dozens of Gnolls in one fell swoop, which makes Allen dare not take the enemies of the civilized world lightly, especially those magical spells, which Allen dare not underestimate.
"Anyway, if it were me, these things would be enough for me to sneak into the town and hide."
The goblin Jack had an expression that said, "That's right," which made Allen feel a little uneasy.
"That's because you're a professional who relies on running away and hiding. Naturally, others can't catch you or find you. I'm different. I'm such a big living person, I can't just disappear. It shouldn't be difficult for others to chase me and kill me, right?"
Allen's speed is good among professions that rely on strength to fight, but if he encounters a profession like the Flower Snake that relies on speed to make a living, then it will be a little difficult to get rid of the opponent.
"If you ask me, why don't you just follow the team? There are not many adventurers and mercenary teams staying in the Thunder Tribe. Even if they all accept this mission, the most opponents you will encounter are only 50-60 people, and most of them are still entry-level combat professionals who have not advanced, and their skills are not very good."
Jack had no feeling at all. He was not a member of the Green Field Tribe, and his relationship with Allen was only a hired one. If things really went wrong, he would turn around and run away. Who could keep him, the Shadow Walker? As for how many casualties the Green Field team would suffer in the end, or how much Allen would be injured, that was none of his business.
"..."
Allen ignored Jack directly, then found Mauro and Dog Egg, and repeatedly told them some important things. Only after they confirmed that everything was correct did he get up to leave.
"I'll go first. You guys stay here for another night, and leave tomorrow. No one should notice you."
"Chieftain, be careful."
Mauro got up and said sincerely.
"Don't worry, I'll be careful."
Allen patted the heavy sword on his back and smiled confidently.
After saying goodbye to his tribesmen, Allen walked out of the inn unhurriedly. Before he even left the door, he noticed signs of being followed. He was not in a hurry to leave, but lingered at the door of the inn for a while, and even roared loudly twice to attract attention, before walking towards the outside of the Thorny Fort City.
Outside the city, in order to wait for the tail behind him to catch up, Allen specially took out a piece of bread and began to eat it, while adjusting his state. When he felt that his state was at its best, he smiled at the people behind him who were also pretending to rest, but were actually the eyes and ears of several mercenary teams and adventure teams in Thunder Town, and strode away, starting his mad dash.
This was Allen's first time acting alone in the outside world. Although he had countless times of wandering alone in the wilderness, he was still a little uneasy compared to this pursuit, which would last for at least half a month. But more emotions that appeared in his heart were surging fighting spirit and strong confidence.
As Allen ran wildly all the way, the two stalkers who wanted to pretend could no longer calm down. At that time, they couldn't care about any disguise, and followed Allen's pace to start chasing. While chasing, they did not forget to use various means to notify their teammates outside the Thorny Fort defense line to prepare for interception.
"Chirp! Chirp, chirp!"
A flying bird sped through the sky like an arrow, and happened to land in front of a team of humans, gnolls, and earth goblins sitting on the ground in a dense jungle. One of the humans waved his hand, and the bird with a palm-sized sharp beak and emerald green feathers flew into his palm. Then, the human took out a small piece of paper from the bird's leg, scanned it, and began to speak: "Captain, that Bear Goblin is rushing towards our location. He will arrive at our location in half an hour at most."
"Very good, if everyone can take down this Bear Goblin this time, we can have a good time again!"
The Gnoll leading the team was Kabus, who had attacked Allen unsuccessfully before and was defeated and driven back by Allen. The previous failure did not dispel his determination to complete the mission. Instead, he reassembled his team and ambushed Allen on the way back.
"The letter said that this time the Bear Goblin and his team are acting separately, which saves us a lot of trouble!"
The human team member said happily, and even Kabus felt a little surprised.
"Oh? Then we need to re-plan the traps."
"Okay, everyone, get moving now and prepare the gift we're going to give him before the target arrives!"
"Jie Jie Jie!"
After a lot of hard work, three figures skillfully ran back and forth on the roadside, and would occasionally climb up the lush trunks on the roadside to set up some deadly traps. More than ten minutes passed, and the human scout took the lead in completing his part and began to scout forward, waiting for the next message to be passed over.
"Here it comes!!!"
The human stood on the tree trunk and saw the emerald green bird in the sky flying closer and closer. He began to issue a warning to Kabus and the others who had just rested behind him.
"You guys hide, I'll force him over!!"
Kabus issued instructions to the team members, then carried his nail-studded hammer and ran towards the direction indicated by the flying bird. After a while, he saw Allen rushing towards him. Kabus quietly hid behind a big tree, quietly waiting for Allen to approach. As the sound of footsteps gradually amplified in his ears, Kabus also silently calculated the distance between them. When he felt that the time was right for the attack, he jumped out of the tree trunk.
"Clang!!!!"
Although Allen had been prepared in his heart, this attack still caught him a little off guard. The heavy sword in his hand had been carried on his back before, and he didn't draw it out until the attack approached, so the strength was not enough to block the opponent's fierce attack. He had to fly back a distance with this blow, and then adjust to counterattack. However, Kabus took the lead and no longer gave Allen a chance to react. He slammed another heavy hammer over, forcing Allen to retreat a few steps again. The nail-studded hammer hit a tree on the side, flying up a large piece of scattered, moist wood chips, and then the tree, which had been growing for who knows how many years, slowly fell down like this.
Allen had no choice but to retreat again and again. Suddenly, his foot stepped into the air, and he immediately realized that something was wrong. He twisted his waist, and his other foot tapped on solid ground again, jumping up again. The Gnoll's nail-studded hammer had already smashed in front of him.
"Clang!"
In mid-air, Allen swung his greatsword, colliding with the morningstar and creating a dazzling spark. Then, using the force of the impact, Allen flew more than 3 meters away. As he adjusted his posture in the air and landed, he discovered that the seemingly unremarkable grassland had suddenly caved in, revealing a pit 4 meters deep and 2 meters wide. Beneath the pit were sharpened wooden stakes, emanating the scent of locally sourced herbs.
Thanks to the help of this trap, Allen gained a chance to breathe. In the brief moment it took the gnoll to bypass the trap and continue chasing Allen, it was enough for Allen to recover his strength and engage in a head-on confrontation.
"Clang! Clang! Clang!"
Allen's greatsword slashed horizontally and vertically, each impact with the gnoll Cabus's morningstar creating a spark. Heavy Slash and Double Slash techniques were used in turn, forcing Cabus, who had previously gained the upper hand, to retreat several steps. At this point, Allen was gradually gaining the advantage.
"Swoosh! Swoosh!"
The sharp sound of tearing air rang out. Allen felt two glimmers of light flash in his peripheral vision. Instinct reacted faster than his brain. The wide blade of the greatsword blocked to the left. With two clangs, Allen felt a jolt on his sword, and then saw two arrows emitting a faint green light on the ground. However, this block gave the advantage he had just gained back to Cabus. By the time Allen retracted his sword to face Cabus again, the latter's charged attack knocked Allen back three steps.
"Whoosh!"
A huge gust of wind swept in from the right. Allen looked back and saw a log more than 2 meters thick falling from the side, arcing directly towards Allen's location. At the same time, two more glimmers of light shot from behind, blocking his retreat. With the gnoll's morningstar looming in front, Allen had no choice but to hold his sword horizontally across his chest, unleashing a Heavy Slash and pouring all his strength into the swing, turning to the right and striking the oncoming log, while leaping to the left.
"Boom!"
The greatsword slammed into the log, and Allen felt a sharp pain in both arms. At the same time, his chest tightened, and a mouthful of sweet, green blood surged from his throat, "Pfft!" He spat it out. Allen was sent flying horizontally by the force of thousands of pounds, snapping countless dense branches in his path.
In mid-air, Allen remained calm despite the shock. His left hand reached into his pack, and when he pulled it out, a bottle of light green healing potion and a piece of parchment were in his grasp. As the parchment scroll shimmered, Allen's heavy body suddenly became light, and the speed of his descent slowed down. The Light Body spell had taken effect. At the same time, Allen's thumb hooked the bottle stopper and snapped it open. With a puff, Allen tilted his head back and poured the healing potion into his throat in mid-air, swallowing the liquid in large gulps.
By the time he landed, Allen's injuries had been brought under control. With the Light Body spell enhancing him, he no longer lingered. His figure darted into the dense primeval forest like a wild horse, fleeing without any regard for his image.
"Chase!"
With a loud shout from Cabus, the human scout and earth spirit team members, who had been hiding in the shadows to shoot arrows, crawled out of the forest and followed closely behind Cabus, chasing in the direction Allen had fled.
Guided by the birds flying in the sky, the three sprinted into the jungle. Before long, another team emerged from the previous battlefield.
"Captain, what should we do? Are we just going to keep watching?"
"This bear goblin's skills are not bad. I don't think Cabus can take him down. Let's wait for them to be both injured before we strike."
"Okay."
The group followed closely behind, plunging into the jungle.
Following this group, a slender figure appeared, examined the traces of the current battlefield, and then followed the footprints disappearing into the jungle.
Cabus and the others were chasing closely, constantly nipping at Allen's heels. Even with the Light Body spell, Allen still couldn't shake off the pursuers behind him, as if they had planted a spy on Allen. As the Light Body spell's effect wore off, Allen's speed returned to normal. Although he had managed to control his internal injuries in time, the lack of rest and constant exertion continued to be a major factor slowing him down.
With each breath, his lungs felt a faint tearing pain, and his heartbeat became somewhat irregular. Realizing that he couldn't shake off his pursuers, Allen knew that he couldn't continue like this and had to make a change.
The human scout, Josh, chased after the green skin in front while using a whistle to communicate with the birds in the sky, using the birds' calls to confirm the target's direction. Behind him, Cabus and the earth spirit Feller spread out in a triangle, forming a pincer formation with Josh.
The chase continued for half an hour. From the birds' replies in the sky, Josh knew that the distance between his group and the green skin was gradually closing, which made him wary and sent a warning signal to his companions. He figured that the opponent should be in bad shape now, having been injured by their traps and after such a long and exhausting chase. Even if the opponent wasn't at the end of his rope, he shouldn't be feeling too good.
"Swish!"
Several thick vines suddenly burst out like living snakes from around Cabus, forming a net that wrapped around his waist. Cabus smashed with his morningstar, and two thick vines snapped on the spot, but several other vines took the opportunity to wrap around Cabus's ankles and waist, temporarily restricting his movement.
"Boss, I'll help you!"
Josh and Feller were about to rush over to help Cabus, but Cabus stopped them immediately: "Be careful yourselves, don't worry about me!"
The Vine Entanglement spell was not of a high level. The mere 2nd-tier spell brought more of a restriction on movement to Cabus than physical harm. He simply flexed his muscles, grabbed a vine around his waist with both hands, and tore it in two.
Just then, a figure descended straight down from the dense canopy above, but the target was not Cabus, who was restricted by the vines, but the human scout Josh, who was on guard and paying attention to Cabus's direction.
"Careful, Josh!"
"You dare!"
Cabus and Feller on the other side noticed the signs, shouted a warning, and Josh himself also felt the killing intent at the same time. He jumped to the side while drawing the dagger from his body and stabbing at the shadow attacking from the sky. The face of the figure in mid-air was clear. Allen raised his greatsword, and with a determined momentum, launched a long-planned Heavy Slash from above, disregarding the other two and with only the human figure in his eyes. With one strike, he crossed paths with Josh, and then without lingering for a second, disappeared into the jungle with a few leaps, as the wind from the steel axe swung by the earth spirit Feller brushed past him.
It wasn't until this moment that Cabus had just cleared away the vines缠身, arriving late and only able to see Josh's body, which had been cut in two by the bear goblin's sword, with his internal organs scattered across the jungle, leaving them in silent dismay.
"Go, continue chasing!"
"Okay!"
Silence was only momentary. Josh's death instead aroused the anger and killing intent of Cabus and Feller, and they lowered their heads again and sprinted wildly, following Allen.
