Green Monster Epic
#228 - Life-saving Straw (Part 1)
Chapter 227: Lifeline (First Update)
Allen struggled, each step a sharp reminder from his body: you've reached your limit, you need to rest, or you'll die of exhaustion.
But he dared not stop. The chilling killing intent, like maggots on a bone, never dissipated behind him, growing ever stronger, piercing Allen's brain.
Each step forward might mean another moment of life. The instinct to survive was so powerful that it finally overwhelmed his body's balance, breaking down Allen's flesh and cells to provide him with the energy to continue.
Perhaps it was an illusion, but Allen was astonished to find his body gradually becoming full and light, his steps returning to their best condition.
His spirit felt the inexplicable changes in his body, as if some unknown substance in the air was passing through his skin into his heart and blood, giving him the power to move forward.
However, Allen didn't know that his body was visibly thinning at this moment. The originally distinct muscles were now slowly degrading.
If someone had been watching Allen's transformation, they might not have believed their eyes: just half a day ago, Allen's body was like that of a bodybuilder on Earth, built through muscle training and protein supplements; now, Allen's body was like that of a lightweight boxing champion on Earth, his muscles still defined, but his physique more pleasing and natural.
Allen wouldn't know where the energy surging within him came from, but he knew that if he didn't seize the time to escape while this energy lasted, the outcome awaiting him would not be good.
Passing through another nearly identical tunnel entrance, Allen suddenly found a messy scene on the ground, with a faint scent of blood lingering in the air.
On the walls were traces of weapons hacking and slashing, and although the maze's stone walls were slowly recovering, in Allen's keen eyes, they were almost indistinguishable from fresh marks. On the ground, scarlet blood and fragments of shattered armor were clearly visible, foreign objects that the maze couldn't eliminate.
Seeing this, Allen was rather pleased. Even if he wasn't sure whether this team would be hostile to his sudden appearance, compared to the powerful opponent chasing closely behind, the unknown team was not so daunting.
Allen acted on his thoughts, following the footprints on the ground. Since the traces they left in the tunnel hadn't completely disappeared, it meant they hadn't gone far. As for whether he would bring disaster to the team ahead by diverting the trouble, Allen couldn't care less. His greatest thought now was to survive. For this little life, Allen could do anything, even if it meant harming other innocent people.
"Who!! Come out!!!"
Chasing after the team ahead for nearly two magical hours, Allen finally heard someone speaking in Common towards his direction, issuing a threat. He even admired himself for being able to persevere without collapsing from exhaustion along the way.
"Sorry, I mean no harm!!!"
Allen lowered his stance, sheathing his greatsword behind him, raising both hands high, and slowly walked out.
The first thing he did was to examine the faces of the team before him. To Allen's delight, even gratitude, there was a familiar face in this team of 8-9 people. Immediately, Allen disregarded all etiquette, waving his right hand vigorously, and shouted at the somewhat familiar face: "Master Oscar, it's me!!"
While Allen was scrutinizing the team, the team, suddenly encountering a stranger, was also scrutinizing this slender, green-skinned figure. When they heard the other party call out their name, Oscar felt that the person seemed familiar, but he couldn't remember when he had seen this face before, and couldn't help but ask curiously: "This Hobgoblin friend, do we know each other?"
Allen was surprised, carefully recognizing the face of the elf Oscar, confirming that he hadn't mistaken him. Why didn't the other party recognize him?
"It's me, Allen Weathers from the Greenwild Tribe."
Regardless of whether the other party was pretending to be stupid, Allen was now in a difficult situation and could only take the initiative to introduce himself with a cold face.
"Allen?? How did you become like this??"
Hearing Allen's self-introduction, Oscar looked astonished. This Hobgoblin had changed so much in just over a month that he was completely unrecognizable, except for the face that still faintly resembled Allen's.
"What? I've always looked like this?"
Allen was actually equally surprised, seeing that Oscar genuinely didn't recognize him. He couldn't help but touch his face, feeling like nothing had changed.
However, while touching himself, Allen quickly ran towards the other party's team, putting this doubt aside, and quickly explained to the other party: "It's really great to meet you, Master Oscar. There's a Legendary Gnoll powerhouse chasing me. You must be prepared!!"
"Oscar, do you know this person??"
Seeing Allen's embarrassed appearance and the expression on his face as he swallowed his anger and spoke about the situation behind him, Nordin, another dwarf powerhouse who had originally intended to simply take Allen in, asked somewhat unhappily.
"Ah, I forgot to introduce you. This Hobgoblin is Allen Weathers, the leader of the Greenwild Tribe in the Greenwild Plains on the edge of the Tagan Desert, and also a believer of my Lord, the Father of the Oak."
Oscar saw the look of refusal on Nordin's face, and then looked at Allen's terrified and pleading expression. In the end, his heart softened and he took the initiative to stand up and introduce Allen, while not forgetting to inquire about the pursuer behind Allen.
"Allen, why would a Legendary powerhouse be chasing you?"
"I don't know either. This Gnoll attacked me and my companions as soon as he appeared. I almost got killed by him. It was hard to escape, and I think my companions have probably perished."
Only now did Allen have the heart to think about Salu's outcome. Although the other party was only a cooperative partner, they had been together for almost a year, and he had developed some feelings for him. Allen still felt a little unbearable about his possible fate.
"It's already very good that you were able to escape from a Legendary's hands!!"
Oscar patted Allen on the shoulder, comforted him, and then whispered a few words in Nordin's ear. The other party looked at Allen with more surprise, but the tone of refusing Allen had also dissipated a bit.
"Since he is a believer of my Lord, let him stay in the team. I want to see what this Legendary behind you is all about."
Allen had long sensed that the commander in the team was not Oscar, but this unremarkable, short dwarf warrior. The leader who could make Oscar listen and had such a big tone must also be a Legendary. With this thought, Allen's uneasy heart was temporarily settled.
