Green Monster Epic

#272 - Contract Demon

Allen had probably long forgotten that more than ten years ago, during the pursuit in the primeval forest on the border of the Elven Kingdom, he had killed two adventurers, a man and a woman, and had also fought with the other four members of their team.

Back then, after Allen injured the human female and fled, several adventurers chased after him, only to be met with a counterattack. He killed another male team member who was escorting the human female back to Thornsburg, along with the injured woman, and hung their corpses on a large tree as a display of power.

And the human adventurer captain, Joey, who was confronting Allen with a fierce killing intent in his eyes, along with the two dwarven warriors beside him, were the adventurers who had been tricked by Allen back then. In order to avenge their blood feud, Joey and his two companions had been honing their strength while searching for Allen's whereabouts, until Night contacted them.

In fact, after Joey and his team failed their mission, Joey, after losing his lover, led his men back to Thunder Town to find Night, who had issued the mission. However, Night had just experienced a conspiracy and betrayal, and was highly vigilant, hiding aside and secretly observing them to find out why they were inquiring about him.

Although he finally understood the reason for their inquiry by eavesdropping, Night was still in a state of extreme suspicion and ultimately did not reveal himself.

Later, Night traveled to the Green Plains several times. Except for the elven teammate who couldn't stand their intense desire for revenge and left, the three of them had been wandering around Thunder Town, doing various tasks to earn a living while taking the opportunity to inquire about news of Allen and Night.

Night concealed his identity and approached the three of them. After cooperating with them to complete several tasks, they established a good friendship. Because Night knew that sooner or later he would fall out with Allen, this powerful green-skinned creature, he might need these three adventurers with decent strength.

As for using the three adventurers at that time and bringing them to find trouble with Allen, this idea was immediately dismissed by Night. When Joey's team was at its strongest, six advanced members attacked Allen, but they failed to kill him. Now that there were only three of them left, how could they be a match for that green-skinned opponent whose strength had grown rapidly?

Of course, Night was also worried that the passage of time would gradually weaken Joey's desire for revenge, so he would always mention their dead companions from time to time during their interactions, to strengthen Joey's determination to seek revenge.

It wasn't until half a year ago that Night finally revealed his identity and told them the fact that he knew Allen's whereabouts. Although Joey and the two dwarves immediately turned against Night and beat him severely, the hatred in their hearts over the years had turned into an indelible resentment. If they couldn't complete their revenge, Joey's life would lose its meaning.

After all, for more than ten years, Joey and his friends had been living with the desire to avenge their friends by finding the enemy from that year. If they didn't complete this mission, how could they convince themselves to return to a normal life!

Allen wouldn't even know that the Bonecrusher, who always seemed full of vigor, had actually suffered a serious illness more than half a year ago and almost died! The health he was showing in front of Allen at this moment was just Bonecrusher holding on to his last breath, acting for Allen.

In order to get Allen to take the bait and come with him to this place of certain death that he had specially chosen for him, Bonecrusher even had Night, the future adventurer of the Bonecrusher tribe, accompany him in this play, just to make Allen willingly follow him. Only with Night, the rising star of the Bonecrusher tribe, accompanying him on this adventure would Allen, this intelligent green-skinned leader, not have too many doubts about this adventure: based on his understanding of Bonecrusher, this old guy had too deep a bond with the tribe, and even if he really wanted to kill him, he would never bring the future heir of the Bonecrusher tribe along.

The reason why he hadn't used the contract that allowed him to command Allen to do three things was because Bonecrusher knew that every time he used this condition, Allen's vigilance would be stronger the next time he asked for help. Bonecrusher would rather waste several opportunities that could have helped a lot, and wait until this one and only time to ask Allen to fulfill his promise, to bring him to a deadly place to bury this threat to the tribe.

The feud between the Bonecrusher and Greenfield tribes had lasted too long, and the hatred between them was already deeply rooted, leaving no room for reconciliation. In these ten years, while the Greenfield tribe had developed well, Bonecrusher hadn't been idle either. He had already made proper arrangements for the future of the tribe. As his end approached, he finally decided to eliminate Allen, this hidden danger, and complete the most crucial step in securing the future of the tribe.

In the dim passage, the atmosphere was very strange. Allen and the three adventurers were locked in a fierce battle, temporarily forming a stalemate. Because Night, the assassin, had not yet appeared, Allen did not dare to use his full strength to deal with the enemies in front of him, so he was still preserving a lot of strength, guarding against Night, the assassin hiding in the dark, and Bonecrusher, who had not yet made a move.

The reason why Bonecrusher didn't make a move was because when he threw those bags of liquid at Allen, the contractual relationship between him and Allen was broken by default. At this moment, in the void of the passage, which was only visible to him, a translucent figure of a contract demon was slowly taking shape.

"Ah, I can finally smell the aura of the material world, jie jie jie!"

A contract demon with two short, pointed horns on its head, a gaunt frame, dark red ossified skin, and mismatched small fleshy wings on its back slowly materialized in a transparent form in mid-air, tilting its head back to sniff the air, emitting a satisfied sigh.

“…Are you the oathbreaker this time? What a pity, a soon-to-be-dead doghead!!”

After savoring the moment, the contract demon lowered its head, somewhat disappointed as it spoke to the decrepit old man before it.

“Oh? Is that young, powerful hobgoblin over there the one you made the contract with? Why wasn't it him who broke the contract?!”

“What a delicious soul, so much stronger than your decaying one!!”

Following the magical fluctuations of the contract, the contract demon's spirit body, having quickly crossed dimensions, discovered Allen in the midst of battle, its eyes filled with naked desire and greedy covetousness as it watched Allen's lithe movements. Although a spellcaster's soul like that of Boneshatter was a rare commodity in the Abyss, Allen's younger soul with greater potential was still more enticing to the contract demon.

“Ahem, Oathbreaker, in my capacity as witness and overseer of the contract, I judge you to have violated the spirit of the contract, and now I shall collect your soul!!”

This contract demon, appearing out of nowhere, was like a comedian, talking to itself for a long time, not waiting for Boneshatter below to make any move, and immediately put on a dignified face to pronounce judgment on Boneshatter's breach of contract!

“Honorable Witness of the Contract, I am willing to accept the punishment for breaking the contract, but I would like to make another deal with you. Please grant me another half a magic hour to eliminate this greenskin, and then I will offer you my soul!!”

The mental shock made Boneshatter's legs weak, and he couldn't even complete the incantation. This was the contract demon's innate advantage over oathbreakers. As long as it wished, it could collect Boneshatter's soul right now.

Only oathbreakers who had crossed the threshold of legend could maintain their original strength and resist in the face of a contract demon. However, behind every contract demon stood a powerful demon duke as a backer. Souls of oathbreakers at the legendary level were beyond their reach; more powerful demons would come to collect them.

The souls of intelligent beings in the material plane were like tempting delicacies in the eyes of the abyssal races, like drugs to addicts, intoxicating and maddening. Otherwise, countless abyssal creatures wouldn't want to cross the planar barriers and stir up trouble in the material plane.

“Jie jie jie~~”

The contract demon, Karl, laughed wildly and arrogantly. He had seen far too many oathbreakers like Boneshatter. Some were even more humble and insane than Boneshatter. At this moment, he looked at Boneshatter mockingly and said, “Oathbreaker, why should I delay collecting your soul? What reward will I receive?”

Although most devils were lawful, they were also experts at exploiting loopholes in the rules, knowing how to act in a way that would bring them benefits while still completing their tasks.

“I will use this soul crystal as an exchange for half a magic hour.”

Boneshatter had long prepared for this. For ten years, he had racked his brains for this moment, and he was confident in persuading the contract demon before him.

“Oh? I didn't expect to see a soul crystal in the material plane!”

The contract demon Karl was somewhat surprised, but his eyes flickered, and he was indeed somewhat tempted.

Collecting Boneshatter's soul was just a errand for Count Bilel, the contract demon's superior. After all, the original magic contract was signed with Count Bilel as the witness. As the supervisor and punisher, Karl could only obtain scraps from Boneshatter's soul; the lion's share still had to be handed over to Count Bilel.

But if he agreed to Boneshatter's request, then the greyish-white six-sided crystal in Boneshatter's hand would be his extra income. A soul crystal was a soul fragment that preserved seventy to eighty percent of a soul. Although it wasn't perfect, it was still much more than he would gain from making a trip.

“Alright, I will give you half a magic hour, but I have another request. If you can kill the hobgoblin in front, his soul will also be sacrificed to me!!”

After pondering for a moment, the contract demon Karl couldn't resist the temptation of the soul crystal and agreed to Boneshatter's request, adding an extra condition.

“Okay, no problem!!”

Boneshatter agreed decisively. As long as he could persuade the contract demon Karl, he could deal with the greenskin Allen before him without any worries.

“Hmm?? Why do I smell the aura of the Abyss? Besides me, are there other abyssal creatures here?”

The contract demon Karl frowned, suddenly smelling a faint sulfurous odor. He muttered to himself, then dismissed the surprise, playing with the soul crystal offered by Boneshatter. He held the crystal to his nose and gently inhaled. A flash of light appeared in the crystal, and a milky white stream of air, faintly carrying a shriek, was gently inhaled into Karl's lungs. Then, a feeling of satisfaction and enjoyment gradually rose on Karl's face.

Anyway, he was only a spirit body descending into the material plane. Even if there were other abyssal creatures here, they would basically not detect his existence, so Karl was not worried about his safety at all. He only needed to be careful to guard Boneshatter's old dog soul, lest it be devoured by the creature that was gradually approaching and whose abyssal aura was becoming increasingly strong.
