Green Monster Epic
#513 - friction
The state of Nur Fortress hadn't changed much despite Allen's absence of over a year, which was exactly what Allen had anticipated upon his return.
With Eric, a legendary figure, holding the fort, the relationship between the northern tribes of Snowdrift and Raven's Claw and the Green Field Tribe grew even closer, because their interests were increasingly intertwined with the Green Field Tribe. Relationships built on shared interests are always the most stable alliances.
The fortress was still a thriving scene. The previous destruction, the relocation of the goblin population from Nasir Fortress, and the subsequent, more scientific urban planning and layout had spurred countless construction projects in Nur Fortress.
The most striking of these were rows of mixed-material buildings, each over ten meters tall and divided into four or five levels. Each building was large enough to house dozens of goblin families, eliminating the need for the goblins relocated from Nasir Fortress to develop new residential areas outside the walls of Nur Fortress.
This architectural style was naturally influenced by Allen's dreams, as few other wilderness tribes or civilized powers on the two continents had such a style where dozens of households lived in a single building.
"Is High Priest Philemon of the Church of Nature still in the city?"
Allen returned to the newly built city lord's castle and happened to run into Facado, Luke, and others, covered in dust from a construction site. He casually asked.
"High Priest Philemon left half a year ago after obtaining the armistice agreement."
Facado awkwardly brushed the dust off his body, feeling a little embarrassed for losing his composure in front of Allen.
"During my absence, has anything major happened, or any news?"
Allen wasn't as angry about Facado leading the construction efforts as he had been when Facado led the team fighting on the front lines. Instead, he felt somewhat gratified.
"Nothing major has happened in the city. Everything is going smoothly. With Lord Eric in charge, those restless fellows in the castle haven't dared to do anything drastic since their leader left with the Oak Church's team."
Luke, as the head of the city's security department and the leader of the intelligence system, had been secretly monitoring dangerous elements in the city.
"However, in the northern Nasir Fortress, it is said that the trolls and gnolls had some unpleasantness, and the two sides almost came to blows."
The last batch of goblins evacuated from Nasir Fortress had already been withdrawn under Albard's orderly arrangements. Now, Nasir Fortress was officially handed over to the trolls and gnolls. Except for a group of over a hundred elderly and weak goblins who stubbornly refused to leave and a jointly formed tax collection supervision team, there were no other members of the Green Field Tribe in Nasir Fortress.
However, before leaving, according to Allen's arrangement, Albard had deliberately handed over the more valuable and less damaged areas of the eastern district of Nasir Fortress to the Raven's Claw gnolls, while the more severely damaged western district was taken over by the Snowdrift trolls.
At the same time, in terms of the supplies left behind, Albard used seemingly fair and reasonable methods to give the Snowdrift trolls relatively more food and materials.
In the short year or so that they had been together, the trolls and gnolls living together in Nasir Fortress had quickly generated countless frictions and disputes. On the wilderness front, the warriors and tribesmen of the two races could at least maintain a certain distance, so even if friction occurred, it could be controlled by the chiefs and the separation of geographical environments.
However, when two different races with different personalities were separated by the limited geographical factors of the eastern and western districts, it was clear that it would not have much effect.
The naturally rough and irritable gnolls would always make trouble out of nothing, starting fights over the smallest issues; while the trolls, although gentle in nature, were unexpectedly stubborn on certain matters, with a temper that ten oxen couldn't pull back.
It was far from easy for these two races with vastly different personalities to live together, as Aerial and Maggot Eye, the two leaders, had thought. By the time the two of them reacted and strengthened their management of their tribesmen, the root of the disaster had already been planted.
Of course, whether there were other forces secretly fueling the flames during this period was unknown.
The final conflict stemmed from an inconspicuous game between children. When dozens of orphaned gnoll and troll children gathered together without adult supervision and played a game of the two races fighting, a weaker and thinner troll child was accidentally knocked unconscious in the alley where they were playing.
Children's games were inherently reckless, especially when everyone was playing too wildly and their emotions were running high, anything could happen.
The blood stained the troll orphan's face red, and it was seen by a passing troll warrior, who had just had a dispute with a gnoll warrior from the eastern district some time ago.
Seeing the troll child bleeding and unconscious, the troll warrior naturally had to stand up for his tribe's child and find the gnoll child who had knocked him out.
It should be known that trolls value their clan bloodline very much, because they look similar to elves, perhaps in ancient times the blood of elves flowed in the blood of troll ancestors, so the trolls' fertility is slightly inferior to the other three wilderness races.
This also means that trolls have a stronger sense of responsibility in managing and caring for their tribe's young.
The troll warrior's intervention in the children's game quickly attracted the attention of other adult gnolls. After all, the street where the children were playing happened to be the boundary area between the east and west districts, and many gnolls and trolls would pass by this place from time to time.
When they saw a strong troll bullying a weak gnoll cub, the naturally irritable gnolls could not sit idly by. The new hatred added to the old grudges, and the two sides quickly gathered a gang of more than a hundred people, pushing and roaring, squeezing together.
The result was predictable. Someone in the crowded and chaotic crowd first threw a fist at the opponent in front, and then countless fists flew up. Fortunately, Aerial and Maggot Eye had great prestige and power in their tribes. Before the conflict, they had strictly prohibited their tribe's warriors from using weapons against each other, so that the conflict did not become a bloody slaughter at the first moment.
The huge commotion and earth-shattering roars attracted more tribesmen from both sides. Without any hesitation or choice, the tribesmen from both sides who came to support and watch quickly joined the battle, and the scale of the conflict became even larger.
Fortunately, the patrols arranged by both sides in the boundary area quickly rushed over and drove away the guys fighting before there were any deaths in the melee. Even so, in the end, the melee involving nearly a thousand people still resulted in dozens of serious injuries, countless minor injuries, and the division between the two sides became more obvious.
Listening to Albard's detailed report of the interesting events that had occurred with his northern neighbors, Allen's eyes gradually became dazed, and the corners of his mouth couldn't help but rise slightly.
Allen had already anticipated this situation when he decided to cooperate with Aerial and Maggot Eye and use Nasir Fortress as a bargaining chip to invite them to help him.
It is not difficult for two different tribes and two leaders in power to live peacefully in a city in the short term, but the difficulty lies in the fact that they will have to live in the same city for a long time in the future. This challenge is simply hellish for the two leaders.
Sending out an important fortress in exchange for the support of the leaders of two powerful tribes may not seem like a worthwhile deal. However, at a deeper level, Allen also wanted to use the interests of Nasir Fortress to break the close alliance between the Snowdrift and Raven's Claw tribes.
As an obstacle blocking the Snowdrift and Raven's Claw tribes from heading south, although Allen was not completely sure at the beginning of the plan that he could kill Bileier and truly annex the Ajinaga tribe.
But if his plan succeeded, then the alliance from the two powerful northern tribes would be the biggest threat to Allen and his newly annexed tribe, even greater than the threat from other forces.
Therefore, Allen would make a move that seemed completely unbelievable to others, and give up almost half of the interests of the original Ajinaga tribe. But only this sufficient and touching interest could prevent the Snowdrift and Raven's Claw leaders from turning against him and attacking him when his tribe was at its weakest.
At the same time, huge interests would also give the troll and gnoll alliance a difficult test, and Allen was convinced that almost no one could remain unmoved in the face of this test.
However, what Allen did not expect was that the troll and gnoll alliance, which seemed very solid on the outside, had already shown signs of wavering before it had even lasted a year.
