Green Monster Epic
#661 - The Secret of Tagan
Anyone who underestimates the power of nature will have their head grabbed by it and slammed hard against the earth, leaving them battered and bruised, and repeatedly trampled upon.
The Greenwild Tribe is no exception. The endless floods not only exhausted the tribesmen but also worried the tribe's leaders.
The most troublesome thing was the drastic change in the natural climate, which ultimately affected the harvest of crops that the tribe had been planting for many years. With near-total crop failures for several consecutive years, the tribe had to pay a greater price to purchase large quantities of grain from outside to sustain the lives of the tribesmen, while also stepping up the search for new alternative crops or simply improving existing crops through druidic magic.
However, for Alan, relying on external resources to supply his tribe was something he was unwilling to see. A large tribe, together with its surrounding vassals, had a grain and material shortfall for at least 300,000 to 400,000 people. Any external problem could cause unrest in the tribe and the wilderness.
Having long abandoned the scorched earth policy, although there were no other wilderness natives within a hundred miles around important strongholds such as Green Lake Town and Rapid Current Bay, there were still quite a few small and medium-sized tribes, such as the Ivan Gnoll Tribe and the Corima Dark Elf Tribe, that were attached to the Greenwild Tribe in the territories beyond.
Outside the wilderness, the geographical environment had undergone tremendous changes. The Gobi Desert, where only sparse vegetation once grew, was now crisscrossed by streams, and lakes of various sizes were connected by streams, like strings of pearl necklaces.
With the nourishment of the source of life, even the most barren land had hardy weeds and shrubs beginning to grow vigorously. Compared to the delicate intelligent races, plants and insects seemed to be more likely to change their characteristics to adapt to the wetter natural environment.
Of course, animals were no exception. With lush grasslands and shrubs, there would be herbivorous animals migrating in search of food, freely breeding and growing without a complete ecological chain. When there were more herbivorous animals, carnivorous animals would naturally follow in their footsteps, taking this place as their suitable habitat.
Prairie voles, pikas, gray rabbits, and other small herbivorous animals attracted small carnivorous animals such as eagles and foxes; the migration of large herbivorous animals such as antelopes, wildebeest, and elk attracted omnivorous or carnivorous fierce beasts such as bipedal flying dragons, berserk lions, and ironback bears following behind them...
The better news was that the area of the Tagan Desert in the north, close to the Greenwild Plain, was no longer short of water. Although it did not yet have the scene of torrential rain every three to five days like the current Greenwild Plain, the annual rainfall was now at least more than the total rainfall of the decade twenty or thirty years ago.
As long as there was no shortage of water, plants would naturally grow tenaciously, followed by various insects and arthropods and reptiles that feed on insects.
This also meant that the actual area of the Greenwild Plain was expanding northward, and the Tagan Desert's encroachment on the land was thus terminated.
"There are still some good things after all, aren't there?"
Oscar and Alan stood in the air, with rolling loess dunes in the far distance in front of them. Occasionally, when the wind was strong, you could often see a piece of yellow sand shuttling between the dunes.
And at their feet, there were clusters of low resurrection grass, tamarisk, and cacti rooted in the vast wilderness, bringing a touch of new color to the barren desert. And around these plants, there were clusters of new buds, blooming with the power of new life, stubbornly but fearlessly growing slowly to the north.
Overhead, where it seemed that one could reach out and touch, white clouds were stacked together, feeling like they were brewing a new round of rainfall, bringing a hint of moist breath to this hot land.
"..."
Alan's face was not good-looking. The Greenwild Tribe's wealth and resources, accumulated over more than a hundred years, were directly consumed by more than half of the time invested in frequent natural disaster management in a few years. Just to build solid flood control embankments along the Turbid Water Creek, tens of thousands of people were invested, and the daily expenses were like burning gold directly. Countless gold coins leaked from Alan's hands in the blink of an eye.
If it weren't for the fact that the climate of the Greenwild Plain had gradually become calmer recently, Alan would probably still be chasing the footsteps of the rainfall and inspecting the tribe's territory.
Although it was not yet certain whether the water vapor pouring in from the endless sea in the west had established an orderly circulation system with the environment and climate of the Greenwild Plain, the rainfall in the wilderness had indeed become relatively stable. Of course, it was impossible to achieve a completely stable climate pattern in just a few short years. In the future, the Greenwild Plain would definitely encounter countless floods and disasters.
At this time, the water conservancy and protection facilities built by the Greenwild Tribe with almost everything it had could be put to great use. When heavy rains raged and floods raged in the past few years, the Greenwild Tribe also struggled to survive. Unless there were more chaotic and terrifying natural disasters than in the past few years, the Greenwild Tribe should not have major problems.
Back then, when Alan made up his mind to go his own way and dig through the West Mansha Mountains passage, he himself didn't know if he would regret it if he could think of the tribe's situation now.
"When the vegetation in this land increases in the future and the soil quality improves, you can plant desert crops such as dates and olive trees here. By then, this desert can also be used by you to raise more tribesmen without any problems."
Oscar hadn't done anything serious for himself these years, and was just busy patching holes for Alan and the others.
Although in essence, the drastic change in the wilderness climate was not a big deal to Oscar, he felt very guilty when he thought that it was the prediction model he had made with others that ultimately caused the natural climate change to not go as they had predicted, bringing no small damage to the Greenwild Plain.
"Hopefully."
Alan nodded slightly, his eyes fixed on a small sand dune in the depths of the desert that looked like a simple bulge, and he casually took a flying ax from the dimensional bag and threw it over.
Boom!
Sand and rocks flew all over the sky, setting off a cloud of sand, but in the sand curtain, Alan clearly saw a humanoid creature flying up and then falling down.
"Sigh..."
Oscar only saw Alan's movements, but did not notice anything moving in the place he attacked. When he saw clearly that Alan had killed a desert-specific snake person, he just let out a long sigh helplessly.
After all, they were also a part of nature, and Alan killed them for no reason. For Oscar, who claimed to be a guardian of nature, he must have felt a little uncomfortable.
"Why do these snake people rarely appear outside the desert?"
In fact, Allen had been paying attention to the movements of the snake people in the desert. After all, he had ventured into the depths of the desert once before and knew that there were quite a few snake people there, and their strength should not be underestimated.
"Here, we must talk about another secret of the wilderness."
The foundation of the natural god system is in the wilderness. Naturally, they need to understand and investigate all regions and races of the wilderness. When it comes to understanding the wilderness, it may be difficult to find anyone more knowledgeable than the Holy See of the natural god system.
Perhaps Oscar felt guilty, or perhaps he thought of the Holy See's goodwill towards Allen, or perhaps it was to prevent Allen from indiscriminately killing, so when he heard Allen's inquiry at this time, he told the information about the snake people without any hesitation.
"The origin of the snake people is related to a mythical creature from the ocean. It is said that the creator of these snake people is a giant snake named Hydra, with nine heads."
"According to the records of the Holy See, the nine-headed snake Hydra had a long-lasting battle with the sea goddess Anbo Li in ancient times for the divine power of the ocean. In the end, Hydra was defeated and driven out of the endless sea by the sea goddess, and finally settled in the depths of the Tagan Desert."
"Because water elements are scarce in the Tagan Desert, the sea goddess found it difficult to adapt to this dry and harsh climate after mastering the ocean domain. Therefore, the seriously injured Hydra chose the Tagan Desert as a place to rest and recuperate."
"Since the snake people were created, they have taken guarding the nine-headed snake Hydra as their lifelong mission. Even if powerful beings appear in the tribe, they rarely set foot in the wilderness or the outside civilized world."
"In fact, in a layered plane somewhere in the deepest part of the desert, there is a temple of the nine-headed snake, where the most powerful existence of the snake people resides. Its overall strength is not weaker than the three royal courts of the Centaur Grassland."
"Do you think that over the countless years, why have countless druids of my natural god system always liked to use the Tagan Desert as a training ground? Is it really just to limit the erosion of the desert wilderness so simple??"
"In addition to this, our biggest purpose is to monitor the snake people civilization in this desert, as well as the movements of the nine-headed snake Hydra."
"In the past, my Oak Holy See in the Thorns Fort temple had two important missions. One was to monitor the domestic movements of the Elf Kingdom to prevent them from launching a war; the other was to monitor the situation of the nine-headed Hydra in the Tagan Desert, to prevent it from bringing disaster and war to the wilderness after waking up from its slumber."
"The Elf Kingdom drove out the members of my Thorns Fort temple because of the war against the Dwarf Kingdom. This means that my Holy See lacks a stable and powerful stronghold for monitoring the situation in the north. The reason why we chose to establish a sub-stronghold in your Green Lake Town instead of in Thunder Town is because it is closer to the Tagan Desert, which is more convenient for monitoring."
"Now, the purpose of the Holy See in expanding the church in Green Lake Town and building a grand chapel is actually based on this, and I hope Allen you can understand."
"… …"
Allen suddenly understood, but soon had other doubts: "Since there is such a big threat in the depths of the desert, why doesn't the natural god system simply organize an elite force to kill into the depths of the desert to eliminate this hidden danger, but instead keeps it there all the time??"
"Allen!! You have to understand that since the snake people appeared in this world, there is naturally a reason for them. As long as they do not cause turmoil and chaos in the wilderness, and do not pose a threat to the balance of nature, my natural god system has no reason to obliterate their existence."
"It is your wilderness tribes who could have eliminated them when the snake people were weak, but you look down on the desert area where the snake people are located and are unwilling to pay a little price, which eventually led to the snake people's power in the Tagan Desert becoming stronger and stronger."
Oscar looked at Allen with pity, which inevitably made him feel a little uncomfortable.
"As for Hydra, as the only nine-headed snake that may exist in the Ferman world, its favorite place to live is still the endless sea, and its domain is also related to the ocean. Therefore, for the gods of the natural temple, Hydra is neither an enemy nor an ally."
"Eliminating a powerful mythical creature will inevitably cost the various churches of the natural temple a heavy price, and they may not be able to kill the opponent. On the contrary, it may anger the opponent and establish a strong enemy. And if it is allowed to hibernate and sleep in the barren Tagan Desert, when it wakes up, it is more likely to return to the ocean. It goes without saying what choice to make after weighing the pros and cons."
… … … …
"Why didn't the Holy See tell us about such an important issue in advance?"
Allen's face became even more gloomy. The Zerg Federation alone had already made him feel heavy pressure. He didn't expect that there was such a big hidden danger hidden in the Tagan Desert.
"You also said that this secret is very important. How could ordinary tribes be qualified to come into contact with it!! Moreover, when your Green Field tribe was weak in the beginning, what could you have done if you were told this secret?"
"Some things, only when your strength and status meet the requirements, and your tribe is strong enough, can you be qualified to understand."
"But you don't have to worry too much. The nine-headed snake Hydra has been hibernating in the Tagan Desert for tens of thousands of years, and has not caused any trouble so far, and poses little threat to the Green Field Plain."
Oscar said to Allen, teasing and comforting him at the same time.
Deep in Allen's heart, he was not very convinced by Oscar's explanation. The prediction model they had made before had results that were very different from reality, making Allen really dare not trust the judgment of the Oak Holy See too much.
However, he also knew that even if he knew this secret now, he seemed to have no way to deal with it, or rather, this matter itself would not have any impact on the Green Field tribe before any changes occurred.
The only thing Allen and his tribe could do seemed to be to set up more sentry posts around this desert, just like the Oak Holy See, to monitor the snake people in the depths of this desert.
Even faintly, Allen felt that he was being calculated: when he didn't know this secret, he could do nothing, but now that he knew the existence of this threat, then for the sake of the tribe's safety, he had to cooperate with the Oak Holy See to do something about the Tagan Desert, so that he would feel at ease.
If the Green Field tribe invests resources to monitor the Tagan Desert, wouldn't that mean that the Oak Holy See's monitoring pressure and investment can be reduced accordingly??
