Green Monster Epic

#796 - Reasons and hesitation

“The truth of the world is that the accomplished are teachers. Your Excellency Allen has reached such heights, you must have extraordinary qualities, naturally worthy of my respect and attention. I am also willing to discuss matters with you.”

The handsome face of Grand Arcanist Garvin always makes it easy for him to communicate with people without creating ill feelings. Moreover, his eyes are sincere, as if a wise scholar has come to visit, making it difficult to refuse.

“Thank you for your high regard, Your Excellency Garvin.”

Allen withdrew his cautious gaze, politely welcoming Garvin into his study, the place where he spent most of his leisure time.

Servants entered from outside, bringing fruits, snacks, and drinks. The two took the opportunity to exchange pleasantries, although the undercurrent of mutual probing in their words remained strong.

“…The Mansa Wilderness now has an ambitious demigod like you, Allen, which is a blessing for the wilderness. In these troubled times, having more power means more hope for the future.”

Hearing Garvin's seemingly casual flattery, Allen felt a deep meaning within. He responded seriously, “Your Excellency's use of 'troubled times' seems inappropriate. Although the Fayman World cannot be said to be peaceful, at least there is no major crisis. Compared to the calamity that began more than two hundred years ago, the current wilderness environment is much better!”

“Is that so?”

Garvin gave Allen a meaningful look, then smiled casually, “Perhaps I am just too pessimistic about things!”

“However, I would also like to hear how you came to your judgment of these so-called troubled times.”

“Actually, I think Your Excellency Allen should feel this deeply, after all, your tribe has just experienced an invasion from the elves.”

“That was just a premeditated act of revenge. Those arrogant elves probably resented my ambush and the loss of several of their strong warriors on the edge of the Tagan Desert, so they launched a retaliatory attack on my Greenwood Tribe. But the warriors of my Greenwood are not to be trifled with. Their invasion was still repelled by my tribe's warriors!!!”

Pride flashed in Allen's eyes. Although the tribe suffered considerable losses in this incident, the prestige gained was equally significant. During his time stationed in Mansa City, many tribal envoys wanted to knock on the door of his castle and become close to him.

“The heroic姿態 of the Greenwood Tribe warriors is indeed impressive, which is why I say Your Excellency Allen's appearance is a blessing for the wilderness!!”

“However, the actions of the elves may not be as simple as you think, Your Excellency Allen. At least, according to the information our guild collected from the Elven Kingdom, their commander was not severely punished for his rash dispatch of troops!!”

“Perhaps this elven invasion was a test of the strength of the wilderness??”

“…Does Your Excellency really think so?”

Allen's expression became solemn. Although the Greenwood Tribe's intelligence system was good, Allen had to admit that the Assassin's Guild, which relied on intelligence and assassination for a living, was more powerful.

“Hahaha, I just have a little thought, Your Excellency Allen, don't take it too seriously!!”

Seeing Allen's serious face, Grand Arcanist Garvin suddenly changed his attitude and laughed casually a few times.

“It's not that I'm taking it seriously, but that I believe in your vision and judgment, Your Excellency. Since you say so, there must be a reason. I just wonder if you can share the secrets with me?”

“Hehe, it seems I have piqued Your Excellency Allen's curiosity.”

Garvin smiled slightly and continued without refusing, “Among the four major civilizations of the Fayman World, two of them consider themselves superior. I think Your Excellency Allen should know which two they are.”

“Although humans and elves are located on two different continents, their competition has never stopped. More than two hundred years ago, starting with the tide of demons, the two races launched wars against another civilization on their respective continents almost simultaneously, and they also stopped fighting at almost the same time. It cannot be just a simple coincidence.”

“Therefore, to explore the major actions of the elves, in addition to investigating their own military and political measures, you can also refer to the actions of their competitor—the human kingdom.”

“Now, on the human side, various kingdoms are secretly mobilizing food, materials, and troops. Various churches are also frequently contacting each other. I am afraid they are ready to start another great war. And this time, without the demons and devils to restrain some of the human forces, they will inevitably want to gain more benefits, preferably uprooting the Orc Empire and completely unifying the Hillen Continent.”

“Of course, the Orc Empire is not a pushover. In recent years, they have also been training their troops and preparing to fight at any time. However, due to the overall strength gap and the lack of strategic command, I am not optimistic about the Orc Empire's results in the war.”

“The strategic intentions of humans have long been seen through by the Elven God-King. Therefore, for the sake of the survival of the race, they will inevitably take action when humans expand, so as to achieve an overall balance of power with humans. Otherwise, when humans annex the Hillen Continent and deploy in the north, the Elven Kingdom may lag behind the human side.”

Hearing this, Allen had some different opinions and interjected to refute.

“Your Excellency, the Orc Empire is not a weak enemy. Even if humans are strong, I am afraid it will not be possible to defeat the Orcs in a few hundred years. Moreover, the human side is not without its shortcomings. There are many kingdoms among them, and the so-called alliance is not monolithic. There is also the Ice and Snow Kingdom, an oddball, whose manipulation could potentially divide them, or at least make their actions less effective.”

“Also, the Temple of Nature will not sit idly by and watch the actions of humans. Although some members of my Mansa Alliance are shortsighted, not all of them are. In the last war, the supplies from the wilderness that supported the orcs and the battlefield that was set off on the Centaur Plains all helped the Orc Empire to contain some of the human armies.”

“Moreover, even if humans deploy in the wilderness, wanting to completely annex the ribbon-like territory of the wilderness, the problem of logistical supply alone would be enough to give them a headache. Thinking of sending troops north to attack the elves of the Taren Continent is simply unimaginable!!”

“Unimaginable???”

Garvin's eyes were deep and serene, but Allen still detected a hint of admiration in them, “In order to make the core main god of the Nature God system, the Father of the Oak Tree, fall, do you know how many years humans and elves have worked together to plan?”

“At least ten thousand years!!!”

“You think that's all there is to it? No, what you don't know is that their planning goes back even further, to an ancient era you can't even imagine.”

“The ancient God War, the fall of the Goddess Mansa, is inextricably linked to the human deities and the elven pantheon.”

“Why does the existence of the Mansa Wasteland conveniently connect the two continents originally separated by the Endless Sea, allowing them to become neighbors who can communicate, interact, and even trade via land routes? Why did the Goddess Mansa's divine kingdom transform into the Mansa Corridor when she fell, instead of becoming an independent continent?”

“Is it really just a coincidence??”

“You mean…”

Allen couldn't help but shudder from the depths of his heart. If what Garvin said was true, then the civilization formed by these human deities was terrifying. No wonder their race could become the leader of the four great civilizations with only ordinary talent.

Looking at the Mansa Wasteland and the natural pantheon behind it, they have been unable to form a unified whole for tens of thousands of years. The gap between them is simply too great.

Only now did Allen suddenly have some understanding of why the Church of the God of Nature began to strengthen its control over tribes and alliances after its rise.

“Anyway, since the establishment of the Assassin's Guild, the intelligence gathered and the analysis of the four civilizations and the direction of the Wasteland have all been verified over time.”

“It's just a pity that the Elven God-King overestimated his race's talent and ability, and underestimated humanity's creativity and potential. Now, they have become opponents who have to run alongside humans. Moreover, the elves dare not stop competing, otherwise, in the future racial wars, a single step behind will lead to constant setbacks, making it impossible to stop the general trend.”

“Thinking from another perspective, could the elves' probing action of invading the Greenwild Tribe be due to some other plans among the elven high-ranking officials, wanting to seize the strategic terrain of the Wasteland and develop it, in order to prepare for the final decisive battle in the future?”

“As long as the humans sound the horn of war again, attracting the attention of the Orc Empire and the Wasteland, then the elves can take advantage of the Wasteland's energy being focused southward to invade the northern border of the Wasteland in one fell swoop. As long as they occupy the strategic location of the Cathore Mountains, the elves can calmly target the dwarves and gain the upper hand in future conflicts with humans.”

“…This…”

Allen wanted to say that their conspiracy was too far-reaching. Not to mention anything else, the existence of the two great civilizations of dwarves and orcs was enough to contend with humans and elves for at least a thousand years. Although humans gained the upper hand in the last war, they only seized less than 1/15 of the Orc Empire's territory. Even if humans were completely united in the next war, they could not really wipe out the orcs.

The most optimistic outcome would be to once again encroach on a part of the Orc Empire's territory, then cease the war and reorganize, gradually weakening and eroding the Orc Empire over the long years to come.

But when he thought about how patient they were in planning for tens of thousands of years, slowly evolving the situation into one that favored both of them, Allen really couldn't say those words.

If Allen's path to godhood ultimately fails, then he may not be able to see that time.

“You can only blame yourself for creating a hole in the West Mansa Mountains, changing the arid and rain-scarce climate environment of the Northern Border, making this land no longer a worthless piece of chicken ribs, which is why the elves were tempted!!”

“Uh…”

Allen was speechless for a moment. He and his people had spent huge resources and painstakingly dug out a passage that introduced a large amount of water vapor resources in order to better survive and develop, but in the end, it became the reason for the invasion of their tribe's territory. What an irony and sorrow!!

Besides sorrow, a raging fire rose in Allen's heart. Even if this world is ruled by the law of the jungle, the behavior of so-called civilizations is too shameless!!

“Fortunately, the Northern Border has now introduced a branch of the Drow, and there is also an existence like you, uniting several major tribes into a powerful force. You may not have the capital to confront the elves, at least you have the capital to contend with them in the short term.”

“In the end, we still can't beat the elves!!”

Allen was made somewhat pessimistic by Garvin's words. He already knew that the elves were powerful and not something his tribe could contend with. Now, after being hit by him, he was even more negative and pessimistic about the future.

“There will always be a way, such as finding a way to delay the time of the war, giving your Wasteland, dwarves, and orcs more time to prepare.”

Garvin said comfortingly.

“At least this generation of the Wasteland has allowed me to see many changes, and I have also seen many people with insight working hard to prepare. The future still has hope!!”

“Is that so? Your Excellency, look at my situation. Don't you think the Wasteland hasn't really changed?”

Allen seemed to finally realize some underlying meaning in Garvin's words, and his tone became gloomy again.

“Some things will have great differences when viewed from different positions. When you look at these problems from the other party's perspective, perhaps you would make the same choice.”

Garvin smiled. This hobgoblin's mind was indeed sharp, and he had already understood one of the main purposes of his trip: “Of course, this is not a reason to shirk responsibility. You must pay the price for making the wrong decision, and Allen, in order to consider the future of the tribe and the Wasteland, shouldn't you also make a more rational choice?”

“I understand. So, Your Excellency, you are here to be a peacemaker for some guys!!”

Everything was clear. Although the words were not fully spoken, Allen had already determined the other party's intention, so he simply stated the theme.

“I'm not just here to be a peacemaker!!”

Garvin did not deny Allen's guess, and at the same time finally told Allen his true intention: “I am also here to invite you, Allen, to jointly carry out an interception mission!!”

“Mission??”

“Yes, a mission that may help the orcs delay the pace of the war!!”

Garvin looked at Allen calmly and continued to say: “Allen, you are a member of my Assassin's Guild, enjoying the various benefits provided by this guild on a daily basis. According to the regulations, it is now time to give back to the guild.”

“Of course, you can also refuse, but if you refuse, this guild may stop providing you with information in the future and resume taking assassination missions targeting you and your tribe…”

“…”
