Green Monster Epic
#999 - Inspection 4
After producing the token I carried and undergoing a rigorous inspection, Allen finally walked into the border fortress amidst the suspicious gazes of the guards at the city gate.
Unlike the planning of Fort Fart and its living areas, this border fortress was built for war from the very beginning. The narrow space had hardly any living areas. Apart from taverns and brothels to lift the spirits of the soldiers, the city was filled with various sturdy defensive fortresses. Even the buildings in the city were mostly heavy and turtle-like, lacking any aesthetic appeal.
There weren't many troops stationed in the fortress, most of whom were on duty on the west city wall. Allen wandered around the fortress from south to north, encountering more slaves and prisoners in shackles than normal soldiers. However, every time he met a soldier, he could feel an aura of iron and blood and ferocity emanating from them, indicating that they had been walking on the edge of life and death for many years.
More than half of the soldiers stationed in the fortress had volunteered to come for training. Therefore, in addition to guarding the fortress daily against attacks by marine life, some soldiers would take the initiative to venture into the ocean a kilometer or two away during their free time to search for ferocious enemies occupying advantageous positions, fighting them to gain experience and resources.
Of course, the after-effects of doing so were also great. The attrition rate of the soldiers stationed in this fortress was also quite high. At most, less than eighty percent of the soldiers who could complete their three-year term of service unscathed and return to their tribes normally. Only about half of the returning veterans from the same period were able to leave in one piece.
This was the price that this army had to pay in order to have such a high proportion of advanced professionals.
Although Allen felt sorry for the army's great losses, he was very supportive. After all, the wilderness was a world where the strong were respected. The Green Field Tribe's regime had been stable for so many years, and its development had been smooth. The forces that once threatened and pressured them in the surrounding area had mostly become friends or followers under Allen's leadership, which made the ordinary Green Field people feel less of a sense of crisis and more of a sense of leisure.
Over time, Allen was very worried about whether the children in the tribe could still maintain enough ambition and bestiality. If a major change were to occur in the future, it would probably cost these goblins who had begun to get used to a relaxed and peaceful life a heavy price.
Now that they had the experience of this front-line battlefield, at least the backbone of the tribe could maintain their combat effectiveness and vigilance. As long as the tribe had a little buffer time, they could lead the tribe to cope with any changes in the future.
The border fortress exuded a faint bloody smell that lingered for a long time. Allen came to a remote corner and jumped high, his body rising directly from the ground, landing steadily on the twenty-meter-high city wall.
Relying on his powerful perception, Allen transformed into a ghost in the night. Although he couldn't hide his figure like a Stalker, there were still too many blind spots on the dozens-of-miles-wide defense line in the dark, enough for Allen to calmly admire this most unstable stronghold of Green Field.
It wasn't that the stationed soldiers weren't doing their duty diligently, but rather that they simply didn't have enough troops. In addition, the concave shape of the fortress and the defense lines extending from the mountains on both sides increased the space they had to defend.
Allen could hear the huge impact of the waves crashing against the cliffs, and he could smell the strong fishy smell of the ocean, but he couldn't see the sea. What was in front of him was a wide stone square, the ground mottled with potholes or traces of knives, guns, and axes.
This open space ended abruptly two kilometers away. The refreshing breeze and sound of the ocean came from the cliff below.
This design was to prevent the fortress from being in danger, to be wary of marine creatures cunningly digging through the mountains under their feet and causing the cliffs to collapse, although it also made it easier for marine creatures to climb up the cliffs and gather to attack the fortress.
In addition to the unavoidable ocean smell, there was also a lingering stench of corruption on the city wall, which emanated from the corpses of marine creatures hanging from the dozen or so bowl-thick flagpoles erected every thousand meters or so.
Although it was no longer possible to identify the appearance of the highly decayed corpses, which were only connected by outer scales and flesh, it was still possible to see their physiological structure, which was completely different from that of surface creatures, such as their slender feet, palms, and webbed feet, and the dorsal fins drooping into a line on their backs.
Allen had never seen many marine creatures before. The only ones he felt familiar with were the Kuo-toa and Naga, the unlucky guys he had encountered during his underwater training.
However, judging from the sharp teeth and claws on their skulls and fingertips, and the fact that most of the corpses were more than two meters long, the strength of these marine creatures was indeed not to be underestimated, or perhaps the overall strength level of marine creatures was higher than that of the Green Field Bear Goblins.
After inspecting all kinds of strange things along the way, Allen was very pleased with the demeanor of the soldiers in the fortress. At the most tiring time of two or three in the morning, the soldiers on night duty were still able to maintain a relatively vigilant attitude, and almost discovered Allen several times. This was also rare among the coalition soldiers on the northern Cold Wind Ridge front.
There were also various types of large equipment on the city wall. Although they were not in an activated state, Allen believed that they would definitely be able to exert great lethality when enemies appeared.
These city defense equipment were not very sophisticated, and their structure even seemed a bit simple. Even Allen, who had never operated these equipment before, could roughly figure out the principle after peeking at them in the dark a few times.
However, although the structure of the equipment was simple, its power was beyond doubt. Just looking at the length and width of at least five or six meters behind the city wall, and the thick and elastic bowstrings and other parts, was enough to explain everything.
More importantly, all of these large equipment were made by the Green Field Tribe, and they no longer needed to be purchased from outside. Even if they were damaged in war, they could be quickly replenished. These were the foundations of a tribe.
And all of this stemmed from the Green Field town closest to Fort Fart—Auro, which had now become the most outstanding production and source of metal weapons and equipment in the entire Northern Territory. Although the mines around the town were about to be exhausted, with the successive discovery of other rich ore veins in the Cato Mountains and the transportation of ore to Auro Town, the somewhat desolate Auro Town was revitalizing.
Satisfied, Allen quietly left the fortress, only regretting that he had not encountered a marine life sneak attack, so he could not admire the heroic scenes of the tribe's brave soldiers fighting.
No one knew that the respected and admired idol in the hearts of most goblins had been here. Just as no one noticed when Allen came, no one discovered his踪迹 when he left.
It's time to give a rough summary of the Green Field forces. This western border fortress should have ended in one chapter, but my procrastinating personality has unconsciously written three chapters. Although this is more because a chapter now only has half the number of words as before, I still have to reflect on it.
I will try to introduce all the major strongholds of the Green Field Tribe in the next two chapters.
