Chapter 276
Devereaux excitedly placed the cage on the only table in the room with a "bang" sound. He seemed to be in high spirits, with an uncontrollable concentration and excitement shining in his eyes.
Behind him, Lu Ping sat up from the bed with a tired look on his face, his eyes were red and swollen, and there was still a hint of sleepiness in the corners of his eyes.
He rubbed his face vigorously, trying to wake himself up.
"Devereux, you didn't sleep all night, did you?"
Lupine's voice was filled with helplessness and worry.
"We have to go to the exchange meeting for a roadshow soon. Can you handle it in this state? The professor definitely didn't give you this thing for you to study like this."
Devereux snorted coldly, without raising his head, and kept busy with his hands.
"Professor Snape hasn't come back all night. Do you think I can sleep in this situation? I won't feel at ease until I understand the cage thing."
Lupine yawned loudly, stretched, and slowly got up from the bed.
He casually picked up a robe from the head of the bed, put it on, and walked towards the door.
"How do you know the professor hasn't come back?"
As he spoke, he opened the door and looked into Snape's room next door, trying to confirm whether Snape had really been away all night.
Devereaux glanced at him, stretched his neck, and said helplessly.
"Don't bother, I've cast a little spell on his door a long time ago. As long as someone opens the door, I can detect it immediately. But it's almost dawn now, and there's no movement at all."
As he spoke, he opened the door of the cage and carefully adjusted the complex structure inside.
His movements were careful and skillful, as if he knew the inner workings of the cage inside out.
Lupine turned around and shook his head.
"Then you can't stay awake all night, so you can now use this time turner to travel through time?"
But unexpectedly, Devereaux raised his head, and the excitement on his face had been replaced by deep thinking and confusion.
He shook his head, his expression solemn.
"No, although the current structure looks complete and even operational, a key part is missing."
Lupine turned around, rubbed his forehead tiredly, and sighed softly, with a hint of helplessness in his tone.
"So, you stayed up all night just to repair this thing? And now you tell me it doesn't work?"
"Then what structure are you talking about?"
Devereaux looked up at him.
"An entrance."
Devereaux tapped his fingers on the edge of the cage, his voice low but clear.
"The structure of the time converters of the Ministry of Magic is relatively simple. At least the ones I know are a batch of old converters that were in service with the Ministry of Magic thirty years ago - those only change the point in time, not the point in space."
He paused, scratched his messy blond hair, and continued to explain.
"But this device is different. It not only changes time, but also changes space. In other words, it can transport the user to another point in time and to another place at the same time."
Lupine's eyes widened slightly, obviously surprised by such a complex magical device.
"So, this thing is more powerful and more dangerous?"
Devereaux nodded, a hint of uneasiness in his tone.
"That's right or wrong. It's no better than the Ministry of Magic's time turner. After all, it has to change the point in space. It's very troublesome, but it is indeed more dangerous."
"And now I have only repaired the time part. If it is forcibly activated, the space teleportation function will be missing and will not work at all. Or worse, the user may be trapped in some unknown time and space rift."
Lupine crossed his arms and leaned against the door frame, looking thoughtfully at the cage.
"So, the question is, what's the missing piece? Are you sure Blackwood didn't give it to you?"
Devereux looked at the cage with a serious expression. To be honest, he didn't expect it to be such a complicated device.
"Pretty sure."
Devereaux's tone suddenly became colder, and there was a hint of vigilance in his eyes.
"The parts that Professor Snape gave me this time were obviously incomplete on purpose. It is impossible for him not to know this, which shows that he deliberately concealed something."
Lu Ping pursed his lips and seemed to lack interest in it. In his opinion, this morning's exchange meeting was the more important one.
"So, do you want to catch up on some sleep? Maybe the professor is waiting for us at the association now. You can have a good sleep and wait for us to go over and set up the scene. It happens to be almost time, and we can see Blackwood then, so just ask It’s good that he didn’t miss anything from the professor.”
Devereaux didn't answer immediately.
He relaxed his tense arms and looked out the window.
The world outside the window is still shrouded in the darkness of winter. The sky is as deep as an unpolished obsidian. Only a few occasional falling snowflakes look particularly dazzling in the weak light.
The sunrise in winter always comes late, seeming to deliberately add a bit of lethargy to this cold season.
He thought for a moment, finally sighed and nodded.
"Okay, let's go there later. If Old Bat is really there, we have to let him hurry up."
As he spoke, he stood up, patted the armrests of the chair, then lay down on the bed again, pulling the blanket to cover himself.
The moment he closed his eyes, the structural diagram of the complex device was still echoing in his mind, as if those parts were waiting for him to discover in a hidden corner.
To be honest, he had never been so eager to see Snape—the man who was cold, mean, but always able to give answers at critical moments.
This time, it was really bizarre.
Lupin looked at Deveraux who had already laid down, smiled slightly, and muttered softly.
"You guy, you say you dislike him so much, but you're still thinking about the professor in your heart."
He did not disturb Deveraux again, but began to organize the materials and samples on the table quietly.
These were the important materials they were going to take to the exchange meeting.
When Deveraux's breathing gradually stabilized and the slight snoring filled the quiet room, Lupin carefully moved the chair and opened the reagent box he had been handling with care.
The inside of the box was divided into neat grids, and each grid contained a potion sample fixed with a cushion, shining with a faint luster.
"Lycosis antidote, confusion agent... complete."
He whispered to himself while checking carefully.
"Wolfsbane Potion... no problem. Polyjuice Potion..."
His eyes suddenly fixed and his voice stopped.
"Why is there one less?!"
