#106 - Return to the crew (please subscribe and read)
Little Robert Downey's face turned pitch black. After "Chaplin" was released, many people helped him promote it, but it was still crushed at the box office by that damned "Buried." This was his shame, his scar.
But that damned woman, Julia Roberts, actually brought it up to his face.
"Robert, don't bother with her. She hasn't read many books, has no insight, and doesn't know how to talk. It's not worth getting angry at her words," Kiefer Sutherland advised.
"Humph, yes, you few have high levels of education, and you look down on this and that all day long. But in reality, you probably haven't even finished reading a book with more than 100 pages since you were little, let alone writing one.
Even if Link is useless, he has written several extremely high-level screenplays, filmed two movies that will go down in film history, and sold 700,000 copies of his science fiction novel in three weeks, receiving praise from a large group of professors.
And what meaningful, boast-worthy things have you done besides drinking, doing drugs, and being jealous of Link day after day? Nothing, not a single thing. I really don't understand how people like you dare to look down on Link!"
"Get out! Julia, get out of here!" Kiefer Sutherland cursed.
"I'm leaving! I don't care to have coffee with you guys anyway." Julia Roberts left without looking back, carrying her small satchel.
Little Robert Downey cursed a 'fuck,' kicked over a chair, pushed over the coffee table, and walked out of the coffee shop with a face full of anger.
Kiefer Sutherland shrugged his shoulders, and everyone dispersed unhappily.
After the third week's sales of "Interstellar Travel" were released, Link received congratulations from everyone, as well as calls from many film companies and famous producers.
The film companies hoped to buy the film and television adaptation rights to several works of "Interstellar Travel," with the adaptation rights for three medium-length novels reaching a quotation of 10 million US dollars.
Link didn't let go, but he didn't completely refuse either, saying that he would be interested in cooperating with the major film companies to develop several film projects in the future.
In the book publishing industry, although doing publicity and book signings can increase the sales of novels, the most effective way to increase novel sales is to adapt the novel into a movie or TV series, making the novel a globally known IP through film and television.
For example, the "Harry Potter" series, the "Hunger Games" series, the "Twilight" series, and "Fifty Shades of Grey" have all become global bestsellers due to successful film adaptations.
Adapting a novel into a movie can earn double the money.
Link naturally wouldn't refuse.
It's just that the current level of special effects technology is not high, and many scenes in the book cannot be filmed.
Those film companies may not immediately shoot after buying the adaptation rights, or they may shoot a garbage film first to seize the copyright.
Doing so wouldn't do much good for promoting "Interstellar Travel."
Link planned to wait a few years, and after Guess Pictures grew stronger, he would cooperate with other film companies to shoot this kind of big production.
"Interstellar Travel" sold well, and the publishing house and book companies were overjoyed, deciding to invest more funds to promote the book.
Link's schedule also became tighter, flying to at least five cities every week and doing more than ten book signings.
After running around for more than twenty consecutive days and participating in more than forty book signing events, Link returned to Los Angeles at the end of the month and entered the "The Blair Witch Project" crew to check on the filming work.
After traveling around the United States for almost four weeks, the "The Blair Witch Project" crew still hadn't wrapped up filming.
The main reason was that Sofia Coppola had too many of her own ideas.
Originally, according to his script, it would take about ten days to film.
But after filming for two days, Sofia called and said that she found that filming according to the script he gave would result in something very ugly. Not only would the shots be shaky, but the composition would have no aesthetic appeal, and the plot design was also very thin.
It looked like a garbage film no matter how you looked at it.
Sofia was unwilling to film a garbage film and proposed to modify the script.
She wanted to add the character of the Blair Witch to the new script, and through description, let the audience know that Blair was an unfortunate woman. Because of the various misfortunes she had encountered in the past, her personality became distorted, and she began to retaliate against others, especially men.
Sofia also wanted to change the ending of the script.
The original ending was that all three college students were killed by Blair, and the handheld camera was found afterwards. After editing by the film company, it became this documentary-style film.
Sofia's revised version was that Blair used strange methods to kill two male supporting actors, but in the end, she was taken down by the heroine, who injured her with the camera.
Before the witch died, she suddenly woke up and told the heroine about her encounter:
'Blair was originally a photographer who came to Wilton Town with her boyfriend to explore. Later, due to a conflict, her boyfriend was killed by the local residents, Blair was raped, and then she was thrown into a bottomless cave, almost dying.
Blair began to retaliate madly after waking up.'
Hearing this, Link immediately shouted to stop.
This story sounded more and more familiar. After thinking about it carefully, the plot was very similar to "I Spit on Your Grave," one of the world's top ten banned films.
"I Spit on Your Grave" was released in 1978, written, directed, and self-funded by Meir Zarchi. It tells the story of a female writer who is insulted by four men while traveling and uses cruel methods to kill the four men after waking up.
In 2010, the film was remade, the degree of bloodiness and violence was reduced a lot, and it also changed from a banned film to an ordinary R-rated film.
Link rejected Sofia's proposal. If it was filmed according to her modification method, the film would be completely unrecognizable. In addition, the budget for this film was 50,000 US dollars, and it would not be possible to complete it for 1 million according to what she said.
He asked Sofia to film according to the original setting. If she was unwilling, he would hand over the director's job to the assistant director, Ed Merrick. This film was very simple, and it could be filmed by anyone who knew how to use a camera.
Sofia reluctantly agreed.
In the later filming, according to Daniel DeVito's report, although Sofia filmed according to the film script, she had extremely high requirements for the shots, the actors' acting skills, and the set arrangement, which also led to slow filming progress.
Link asked Daniel why he didn't stop it.
Daniel claimed that filming according to Sofia's ideas would result in a higher quality film and a guaranteed box office.
Link almost fainted when he heard this.
If he had known that handing the film over to others would cause so much trouble, he would have said that he would wait for the film to be finished before attending the book signing.
Also because the filming progress of "The Blair Witch Project" was slow, the crew's expenses had seriously exceeded the budget, and he had to suspend the overseas book signings and return to the crew to clean up the mess.
"Link, look, isn't my filming better than your design?" Sofia played the filmed footage in front of the director's monitor for him to evaluate.
Link watched for a while, watching the blood vessels on his forehead throb.
