Hollywood Director 1992

#33 - Teach Monica

In the afternoon, Monica Bellucci arrived at Guess Pictures. Standing in front of the film company, a hint of doubt flashed in her eyes as she looked at the 'Guess' logo, wondering why the company was named 'Guess'.

"Welcome! Hello, who are you looking for?"

Liu Xiaoli, who was idle in the company, suddenly saw a woman walking in at the door and hurried over to greet her.

But when she saw the woman's face and figure clearly, even though she was a beauty herself, she couldn't help but be amazed.

The woman had the exquisite and three-dimensional features of a Western woman, a tall figure, and mature and full body curves, like the plump and gentle women in Italian Renaissance oil paintings.

The woman wore no makeup, dressed in an ordinary women's T-shirt and blue jeans. Her thick, curly long hair draped casually over her shoulders, and she carried a small satchel. She was not only beautiful but also very fashionable and elegant.

"Hello, is Director Link here? I am Monica Bellucci. I made an appointment with him yesterday."

"Hello, Miss Monica, please come with me."

Liu Xiaoli politely gestured and greeted Monica, walking towards Link's office.

Monica Bellucci walked slightly behind Liu Xiaoli, about a step apart. As she followed Liu Xiaoli forward, she glanced at the woman leading the way.

This woman, like Link, had an Asian face, a tall and slender figure, and a delicate face, revealing the unique charm of an Eastern woman, exquisite and elegant, like fine Chinese porcelain, very attractive.

"Miss, are you Director Link's assistant?"

"Yes, I am temporarily his assistant. My surname is Liu."

"Hello, Miss Liu!"

"Miss Bellucci, are you an actress?"

"Yes, I hope to become a real actress."

"You can do it, you are very beautiful."

"Thank you, you are also very beautiful."

Liu Xiaoli walked to the front of Link's office and knocked gently on the door.

"Come in!"

"Link, Miss Monica Bellucci is here."

Liu Xiaoli led Monica into Link's office, then closed the door and went out. But after closing it, she suddenly remembered that there were guests in the company, and the assistant should be responsible for drinks and tea.

She hesitated at the door, knocked on the door, and asked Link and Monica what drinks they needed.

"No need, there is a refrigerator here. Sister Xiaoli, there is not much work in the company this afternoon, you can go back early, be careful on the road."

"Okay, then I'll go first."

Liu Xiaoli waved her hand and closed the office door.

In the office, Link picked up a handheld camera, pressed the record button, and placed it on the desk.

The camera lens was aimed at the center of the office.

"Monica, let's try the lines first."

Link and Monica each took a script and began to rehearse their lines in the office.

The story of 'Paranormal Activity' is very simple. A young couple, Katie and Micah, move into a large house in the suburbs. But after living there for a few days, they find that there seems to be something unclean in the house.

Often in the middle of the night, there are some inexplicable noises in the house.

In order to find out the truth, the male lead, Micah, buys several cameras and puts them in the bedroom, hoping to record the evidence of the ghost's appearance with real images. But in the end, things gradually get out of control.

The heroine, Katie, is possessed by a ghost in the middle of the night, often sleepwalking, and finally kills her husband, Micah, in her sleep.

There is not much blood in this movie, nor are there any severed limbs. One of the more terrifying elements is the strange sounds and the eerie images captured under the lens.

This pseudo-documentary shooting method maintains the original flavor of the live footage, making it easy to be substituted into when watching, stimulating the audience's improper associations.

This is also where 'Paranormal Activity' looks so scary.

"Honey, what's wrong?"

During the rehearsal, Link stood in the middle of the office, holding a small camera and aiming it at Monica Bellucci.

In the scene of the script, the male lead comes out of the house with a handheld camera, aiming the lens at his girlfriend Katie, who is driving back from outside.

When the two are acting, they try to simulate the scenes in the plot, showing the actions of the characters in the play and performing virtual scene performances without real objects.

"What is that thing?"

Monica Bellucci sat on the sofa, looking up at the camera.

"Hello, dear!"

"That thing wouldn't be..."

"That's right!"

"I don't know what you're thinking, but no matter what you think, it must be good. I think that's a large camera, where's your old handheld one?"

Monica Bellucci asked.

"Stop!"

Link put down the camera in his hand, "Monica, be more casual when performing, don't use too much force, don't think of yourself as an actress, but as my girlfriend, we are very much in love, and life is very sweet. When talking, don't reveal too many performance traces, try to be as natural as possible, like shooting a family video of Christmas or a birthday party. Remember, we are shooting a documentary-style film, authenticity and naturalness are very important, and artistry is secondary."

"I understand, I'll try."

Monica Bellucci nodded, picked up the script and looked at it, brewed her emotions for a while, and continued to practice her lines with Link.

"Come on, kiss the camera."

"I don't want to kiss the camera, I want to kiss you."

Monica kissed him on tiptoe.

"How much did you spend buying it?"

"What are you doing?"

"Do you think this will work? Can you photograph the ghosts in the house?"

"I think we're going to have a lot of fun."

Monica Bellucci continued reciting her lines, a bit more relaxed than before, but not by much. There were still many areas that needed improvement.

Link held the camera, filming while also playing the role of her husband, responding to her dialogue.

After practicing for about an hour, Link called a halt to the rehearsal, allowing Monica to rest. He set down the small camera and turned on the VCR on his desk to watch the footage they had just shot.

This camera was the latest Canon LX-1 handheld camcorder, which could change lenses, and its clarity and picture quality were not inferior to professional cameras.

The only inconvenience was that it didn't have the data storage function of digital cameras, so he had to change blank tapes frequently.

"Link, how was it?"

While he was watching the video, Monica walked up behind him, the fragrance of roses mixed with the warmth of her body, wafting into his nostrils.

"There are some problems."

Link stroked his chin as he watched the video footage.

Although Monica Bellucci's performance had areas that needed improvement, that wasn't the main problem. The main problem was that he and Monica Bellucci didn't look like a couple. One was Asian, the other Italian, with an age difference of eight years. They didn't quite match as husband and wife.

To solve this problem, he could only replace himself or Monica.

After considering it, he decided to replace himself.

He wasn't doing this to promote Monica, but out of consideration for the quality of the film.

If he continued as the male lead, finding a suitable actress would require finding a Chinese actress, and if both the male and female leads were Chinese, the film would become a Chinese film.

In 'Buried' there was only one actor, a Chinese man mistakenly identified as a Soviet spy, so it wasn't a big problem.

Continuing to use an Asian face in 'The Ghost Shadow' might affect the box office in Europe and America.

Furthermore, 'The Ghost Shadow' was a pseudo-documentary-style film, and to make the audience believe it was a documentary, it was best to use actors who were unfamiliar to the audience, or non-professional actors.

Monica Bellucci had been in Hollywood for half a year, only playing an insignificant vampire bride in 'Bram Stoker's Dracula'. If she hadn't later become famous for 'Malèna', almost no one would know that she had played a minor role in that film.

Currently, she was almost the same as a non-professional actor.

Link, on the other hand, played the male lead in 'Buried', with the camera focused on his face for more than ninety minutes, leaving a deep impression on the audience. Many people knew he was an actor.

Using his familiar face to shoot a pseudo-documentary would undermine the authenticity of the documentary, making it difficult to fool the audience.

"Is it my problem? I can correct it."

Monica Bellucci asked with a nervous tone.

While watching the video, Monica became more and more disappointed, disappointed in herself.

She considered herself a professional actress with rich acting experience, capable of handling any role.

But in the performance, she performed much worse than Link.

Link performed very naturally in front of the camera. Whether it was his tone of voice or his movements, he was very relaxed, just like in his daily life.

And her language and movements still had traces of acting, and she wasn't relaxed enough.

The gap was obvious.

Hearing Link's response 'There are some problems', her heart also jumped nervously, worried that she would be replaced by Link.

"It's not your problem. Monica, don't be nervous, you performed quite well."

Link felt something warm and soft pressing against the back of his left shoulder, seeming to be thumping, and the fragrance in his nostrils became even stronger.

"Then what's the problem?"

"There's a bit of a problem with our coordination."

Link briefly explained the mismatch between the two and the problem that his familiar face was not suitable for this kind of pseudo-documentary.

"You're going to replace the male actor?"

"Not for now."

Link planned to first act as the male lead and try filming it once with Monica.

After filming, he would see how much rating and experience the system could give, as well as box office subsidies.

If the subsidy was too small, he would replace other male actors.

This film only had an investment of twenty thousand, and the shooting cycle was expected to be one week, so it could be filmed three or four times a month.

It was very suitable for practicing, so it would be a pity to miss it.

Link told Monica his plan to shoot it a couple more times, which would be more cumbersome, but would guarantee the quality of the film.

The only inconvenient thing was that Monica might need to repeat the performance.

"I don't mind. I'm a new actress, and repeated filming can give me more practice."

Monica Bellucci was a very ambitious actress. When she heard that she had to repeat the performance, she didn't feel cumbersome at all. Instead, she thought it was a very good opportunity.

Link was not only a very talented screenwriter and a genius director, but also an actor with superb acting skills. It was an opportunity not to be missed to act under his direction and get his guidance.

"It's good if you don't find it troublesome. If the filming isn't successful, I'll give you additional pay."

"Link, I can not take the pay. I just want a chance to perform."

"There's no need for that. Although this film doesn't have a high budget, the actors' pay can't be less. You have two choices: one is $10,000 to complete the entire film, including the repeated filming, and the other is $1,000 per day. You can consider it before making a choice."

"I choose the $10,000 pay."

Monica Bellucci quickly made her choice.

"Happy cooperation."

Link picked up the phone on the table and asked Daniel DeVito to print a copy of the actor's employment contract and bring it over for Monica to sign.

He also signed the first actor of 'The Ghost Shadow' crew.
