Hollywood starts with a broker

#16 - The thief is still alive

Cannes, Carlton Hotel.

Nicole Kidman and Aaron were lying together in the bathtub in the bathroom. "Aaron, that Harvey Weinstein, the head of Miramax, looked at people too directly tonight!"

Aaron nodded, his closed eyes then opened. He hugged Nicole in his arms, "You're talking about that guy? He just likes to use roles to play with those newcomers who have just entered Hollywood;"

"Be careful in the future, he might use a role to lure you to a hotel, just like last time."

But then again, this fatty really does have an extraordinary eye. He even took a liking to 'Sex, Lies, and Videotape' and 'Cinema Paradiso'?

"Yeah, it's really hard to become famous in Hollywood!"

Aaron pursed his lips, "It's hard, but also easy!"

"Where is it easy?"

"It's easy if you know me," Aaron said, patting the person in his arms. "I haven't taken good care of you these past few days. Tonight, hehehe!"

Nicole Kidman rolled her eyes, "You're so busy during the day, do you still have the energy at night?"

"I definitely do..."

May 11th, the closing ceremony of the Cannes Film Festival was held at the Palais des Festivals:

Steven Soderbergh, a new American director, won the Palme d'Or, the highest honor at Cannes, for his film 'Sex, Lies, and Videotape'. James Spader won Best Actor;

Giuseppe Tornatore, a young Italian director, won the Jury Prize for his film 'Cinema Paradiso';

Emir Kusturica of Yugoslavia won Best Director for 'Time of the Gypsies';

American actress Meryl Streep won Best Actress for her film 'A Cry in the Dark'!

...

The Palme d'Or win for 'Sex, Lies, and Videotape' made Steven Soderbergh a true sensation.

The distributor, Miramax, specially held a celebration party on a yacht in the port of Cannes!

"Congratulations, Steven, James!" Aaron attended the party with Nicole Kidman.

With a Palme d'Or and a Cannes Best Actor award, 'Sex, Lies, and Videotape' was definitely the biggest winner this time.

"Thank you, Aaron. You definitely deserve credit for the film's success," Steven Soderbergh was clearly very excited.

"Enjoy it," Aaron patted the other person's shoulder. Tonight, Miramax invited quite a few cast and crew guests.

"Nicole, have you met that New Zealand female director Jane Campion?" Aaron asked his female companion, Nicole Kidman.

"Yes, we had a great chat. We'll have a chance to work together in the future." Previously, Aaron had specially met with Jane Campion and introduced Nicole Kidman to her;

Right now, Jane Campion doesn't have any plans to go to Hollywood, but if there's a need in the future, she can contact Aaron Anderson.

Aaron nodded, "Well, I'm going over there to talk to Gabriele Carosi, the production representative of 'Cinema Paradiso'. I'll be back later!"

"Okay," Nicole Kidman knew that Aaron was going to talk about the distribution rights.

After Aaron Anderson left, Nicole Kidman took a glass of champagne from a waiter's tray, but then heard someone call out to her, "Ms. Kidman!"

"Ah, good evening, Mr. Weinstein."

Nicole Kidman saw that it was Harvey Weinstein and greeted him as well.

Harvey Weinstein smiled, "You know Meryl Streep, right? The film that won her the award, 'A Cry in the Dark', was also distributed by Miramax!"

"Yes, I know her. Ms. Meryl Streep is a very respected actress in Hollywood."

"And her acting skills are amazing," Nicole Kidman replied.

Harvey Weinstein took a sip of wine, "You're a newcomer actress from Australia. Hollywood is different, the competition is very strong;"

"It's very difficult for a newcomer actress to stand out if she doesn't have any eye-catching performances!"

Nicole Kidman remained elegant, "Mr. Weinstein, what do you mean by eye-catching performances?"

"Ha, your boyfriend Aaron Anderson is an agent at CAA, didn't he tell you?" Harvey Weinstein stared at Nicole Kidman,

"You're very beautiful, and you have a great figure, but you're a bit too tall, but it's not a big problem;"

"Miramax has a lot of projects to develop next, maybe we can work together!"

"Work together?" Although Nicole Kidman knew that the other party had malicious intentions, she couldn't help but ask,

"Mr. Weinstein, may I ask, what kind of roles are we talking about?"

Harvey Weinstein smiled, "Of course, high-quality art films. Isn't Ms. Meryl Streep an example?"

"Nicole, can I call you that?"

Nicole Kidman nodded, "Of course you can."

"It's not that easy to gain a foothold in Hollywood. This is the mecca and center of world cinema," Harvey Weinstein said, taking another sip of wine.

"You only get rewards if you put in the effort. What Hollywood lacks is opportunities. So, how can you get the opportunity yourself?"

"So, Nicole, you need to be prepared to adapt to Hollywood!"

Nicole Kidman of course understood that if she wanted a role, she needed to put in extra effort.

"Oh, Harvey, do you have a role you want Nicole to try out?" Suddenly, Aaron Anderson's voice rang out from the side.

"Aaron," Nicole Kidman came to the man's side and took Aaron's arm.

"Haha, Aaron, you must have had a great harvest tonight," Harvey Weinstein raised his glass and clinked it against the other person's.

Two of the films he represented, one won the Palme d'Or, and the other won the Jury Prize!

"Not bad," Aaron put his arm around Nicole's waist, looking at Harvey Weinstein in front of him. This guy really isn't giving up?

"I just spoke with Giuseppe Tornatore, the director of 'Cinema Paradiso', and Gabriele Carosi, the representative of Italian Cristaldi Film;"

"The North American distribution rights were sold outright for $4 million!"

"Aaron, are you kidding me?" Harvey Weinstein widened his eyes.

Aaron shook his head, "Theatrical release, videotapes, plus television broadcasts, the price of $4 million for 'Cinema Paradiso' is definitely not expensive!"

"That's impossible, $2 million at most."

"$2 million is too low. Samuel Goldwyn Films and Fine Line Features have both expressed interest..."

Fine Line Features is a label under New Line dedicated to distributing art films. New Line was originally just a small company specializing in overseas film distribution;

After accumulating capital, it began to participate in the production of low-budget horror films and entered the film production industry. The success of the 'Nightmare on Elm Street' series made New Line famous in the secondary film market, and it specially established a label, Fine Line, to produce and distribute art films.

In the end, Miramax purchased the North American distribution rights to the film 'Cinema Paradiso' for $3.2 million!
