I created the Bureau of Anomaly Control
#21 - 21. Reflection (Seeking follow-up reading)
Cao Yan was dead.
A silver dagger inlaid with sapphires lay on the bedroom floor, while she lay on the bed with a blissful expression, crimson blood splattered like raindrops on the walls and comforter.
It was suicide by dagger, and the doctors also discovered that she hadn't been taking her medication on time. It was highly likely that she was in the throes of some incomprehensible, delusional madness before her death.
Fortunately, no one outside the hospital cared about her life or death, so the whole matter was quickly settled.
In front of room 721.
Ma En directly pushed open the door.
But it was empty.
He turned around, walked a few steps back into the hallway, and saw the slender woman who could change her appearance standing by the stairwell a dozen meters away.
She glanced at Ma En and walked into the stairwell.
Ma En followed.
When he pushed open the door, he saw the woman standing on the stairs, looking down at him:
"Did you get it?"
"I got it," Ma En replied.
But the lock pick wasn't reacting?
She suppressed her doubts:
"Is it on you?"
"Yes," Ma En said, "Xu Wen mentioned a new treatment plan. Do you know what's going on?"
The slender woman grinned:
"He's going to make a move on you, but don't worry, he can't gather enough lunatics he needs now. You, Ning Changkong, and Cao Yan are all his targets."
Ma En asked:
"You killed Cao Yan."
The woman said with a smile:
"No, I didn't kill her. I just made up a beautiful lie, and she willingly drowned herself."
Ma En said:
"I want to be discharged."
The woman sneered:
"You know, I originally wanted to kill you. All three of you will become Xu Wen's strength in the future. Killing any of you would be in the company's interest.
"Li Fen told me to spare your life, so I let Cao Yan die in your place.
"Now, hand over the thing."
Ma En tilted his head slightly.
She was different from Xu Wen. This force called the company wasn't just a few individuals. If he revealed his powers in front of them, it would likely mean the entire company would know of his existence.
And Ma En wasn't sure what harm this would cause him, but based on his message, it was best to let others think he was a mental patient.
"You mean even if I give you the thing," Ma En said, "you won't help me get discharged."
The woman shrugged:
"We'll take out Xu Wen, and you can try to hold on until he dies, Ma En, this is your only chance."
She was too lazy to waste any more words.
The woman walked down a step.
"Maybe I do," Ma En said, taking a step back.
Returning to the spacious and brightly lit hallway.
He adjusted his collar irritably, turned and walked towards the end of the corridor, quickly entered the closing elevator, and deftly pressed the sixth floor button.
He had three paths he could take now: help the company take out Xu Wen, find a way to make Xu Wen back down, or…
Figure out how to kill the doctor.
When he got the notebook, he remembered some fragmented memories. Maybe getting in touch with things that were meaningful to his past could help him remember his past, and the first thing Ma En could think of was his identity.
Director of the Paranormal Control Bureau.
The message only mentioned that there was an employee access to the Control Bureau in the ward on the second basement level, but it didn't say how to get there, or if there were other ways to enter.
He had tried to imagine himself being summoned to the Paranormal Control Bureau or something, but it was completely useless.
Ma En returned to his room.
Click.
"You have the notebook with you?" Li Fen was sitting on his bed, and the surrounding cabinets also showed signs of having been rummaged through. "Sorry for touching your things, but I wanted to grab it and go."
Everything of value was on him.
Ma En closed the door behind him:
"I met your…"
"Colleague," Li Fen said, "I don't like her, but we're the only company members who have infiltrated the sanatorium, so I don't have any other partners.
"Don't worry about what she said, I'm the one making the decisions."
One of the two methods would work.
Ma En said:
"I've read the book, there's nothing in it that can deal with Xu Wen."
Li Fen reached out her hand:
"Let me see."
But Ma En didn't hand it over:
"I want to ask, how do you know it can deal with Xu Wen."
Li Fen said frankly:
"I don't know, but the company definitely knows. This is a mission given to me by a superior."
Ma En asked:
"Can you guys take care of him before he gives me the new treatment, what are you going to do?"
Li Fen said gently:
"Before I get the notebook, I can't tell you anything."
She was still holding out her hand.
Ma En handed over the thin notebook—it no longer had his name in it.
Li Fen took it with a smile, looked down and glanced at the cover, and confirmed that this was what the Prediction Department had said.
She opened the first page with a smile on her face.
"Very good, transaction records, this must have evidence of Xu Wen getting his position, which can make him lose his doctor's status, and without that, it's easy for us to deal with him."
But as she continued to flip through the pages, her expression became more and more unpleasant.
"This is just an ordinary record of bribery."
She looked up, looking at Ma En with a faint hint of anger in her eyes, and asked with displeasure:
"Are you sure this is it? If we didn't have the notebook, you would definitely die at his hands. I'm not hiding it from you, that new treatment plan will indeed kill the patient.
"Hiding it won't do you any good."
Ma En said sincerely:
"There's only this in the safe."
Li Fen's face turned cold.
There were only two possibilities, either Ma En was lying, or this notebook could indeed take down Xu Wen, but in a way that she couldn't use or utilize.
"Then there's nothing I can do," she said coldly, "If this notebook doesn't work, I can only wait for the company's reinforcements, and you can only wait to die."
Ma En asked suspiciously:
"Are you sure there's no other way?"
If Li Fen really couldn't provide any other help…
Then she was useless.
She shrugged:
"Maybe you can try stabbing Xu Wen with a knife, and then you'll disappear quietly in some incomprehensible way, and no one will mention them, only cold numbers can prove they once lived.
"But I heard that those trespassers don't just die, but will wander forever in the basement of the hospital, which is full of bloodthirsty vengeful spirits, but…
"Maybe you can find a way out."
In the end, there was some sarcasm in her tone when she said this. Ma En was just a low-level lunatic. If he was trapped in the underground, he could only become one of the crazy vengeful spirits.
Underground?
"Thank you, Miss Li Fen," he said, looking at Li Fen.
But she just stood up expressionlessly and walked outside.
Ma En wasn't worth her wasting words on now.
Unfortunately, she didn't know that some things were far more terrifying than death.
But for her, as long as Ma En didn't fall into Xu Wen's hands, it would be enough for her to have plenty of time to wait for the company's support.
These lunatics were no different from other mortals, they were all cheap, renewable resources.
Although I said I was going to sleep, I still got up to code. Give me some monthly tickets~
