I created the Bureau of Anomaly Control
#615 - 605 Shadow's Warning
The dust settled.
After seeing the new weapons that Mann took out and the thick stack of contracts, and after haggling with him for more than ten minutes, these federal politicians finally decided to continue cooperating and put all the gods into slumber.
After finalizing many details, the politicians left through the Viktor Hotel's secure passage to handle their upcoming cooperation with Mann. Before they left, all three politicians exchanged glances with Mann, but their eyes conveyed completely different and obscure meanings. Even Mann couldn't discern what these politicians wanted to say, or what they were leaving unsaid, simply by looking into their eyes.
After settling these matters, Mann also left the building directly through the main entrance.
However, before he could use the shadow dimension to get far away, a figure emerged from the shadows of a distant alley.
"Is there anything else you need?" Mann asked, looking at the suddenly appearing shadow.
The shadow said:
"Can't I just chat for a bit? There aren't many Tier 5 practitioners in this world, and most of those are in the Federation and have conflicting interests with me. Among the rest, there aren't many I can communicate with normally."
Hearing him say this, Mann brought up the main topic instead:
"So, you'll be responsible for taking care of the Fire God?"
Seeing that Mann didn't want to chat idly, the shadow wasn't surprised at all, but he wasn't in a hurry to say anything either:
"Yes, after dealing with him, the other gods won't pose a threat. The Sea God no longer has the transcendent status he had thousands of years ago, and the Thunder God, who reshaped his godhood with the concept of 'freedom,' won't intervene too deeply. Among the remaining gods, the most dangerous is the Fire God. Oh, and…"
"The Moon God is gone too."
After dropping this sentence, the shadow looked at Mann with interest, anticipating how Mann would react after learning that the Federation had already grasped this information.
But Mann replied with an extremely natural expression:
"No, the Moon God is still here, you're just blocked by the clouds."
The shadow asked as if it were perfectly normal:
"Oh, so you guys helped her hide? Can I suspect that your idea of dealing with Selaern isn't that simple, and you want the Moon God to replace Selaern's current position."
After hearing the shadow's words, Mann knew that he couldn't use his original rhetoric to搪塞(tang塞 - prevaricate/fob off) the Federation anymore.
So he directly admitted:
"That's right, we certainly have our own 'evil plans.' I think anyone with a brain can figure out that the reason I want to deal with Selaern isn't that conflict, but some reasons we haven't spoken out loud."
"But this shouldn't concern you, right?"
But the shadow didn't seem offended at all, and instead smiled:
"You don't have to say 'you guys,' it's just me and you here.
"I'm just a thug for the Federation, not their slave. I don't have to tell them everything. This is just my own judgment. After all, if you think about it carefully, if the Moon God really existed, then you, who are a Tier 5 practitioner yourself, are the person we should suspect the most. But don't worry…"
"Even if I really tell them this news, it won't be a bad thing for you. After all, if you really want to support a new god to replace Selaern's position, it wouldn't be a bad thing for us either."
"You might not see it in this era, but to put it in an inappropriate analogy, if you compare the other gods in their prime to Tier 5 practitioners, then Selaern is the神霄(shen xiao - Godly Sky) among them."
"He's just trapped in a fishpond now. If you can kill him in this era, then the Federation is actually willing to pay a considerable price. As long as you can patiently negotiate with them and slowly gain their trust, maybe you can get more benefits and help."
Mann said with a calm expression:
"Maybe, but we don't need it."
The shadow narrowed his eyes slightly:
"Or is it that your time is a bit tight."
Facing this probing, Mann remained watertight:
"It should be that our time is very tight."
Of course, this wasn't the truth. He was hinting to the shadow that the gods were about to escape the curse, and the shadow's expression changed subtly upon hearing this, unsure if Mann was telling the truth.
"If that's the case," the shadow said noncommittally, "then we really have to deal with the gods sooner. After saying so much, I almost forgot that I didn't come to talk about serious matters with you.
"I said I came to chat with you. You should know that I can't read the minds of those politicians, but as a mind practitioner, I'm also familiar with the correspondence between various human emotions and expressions. Therefore, even without using mind abilities, I can vaguely perceive their thoughts, of course…"
"These politicians are more difficult to perceive emotions than ordinary people, so I can't say anything particularly specific or detailed, but I always feel that there was something wrong with the way some of them looked at you today."
Mann said:
"Tang Xueluan?"
"Yeah," the shadow looked up at the distance behind Mann, "and Nie Chengyu."
