I created the Bureau of Anomaly Control
#645 - 634 "Going astray"
The intense pain caused Maen to briefly lose consciousness. All colors, sounds, and tastes vanished from his neural network, his entire head overwhelmed by the intense sensation of pain.
It wasn't until the harsh industrial white light pried open his eyelids again.
"Awake?" A chillingly cold voice came from across the room.
Maen, enduring the pain, lifted his eyelids and first saw his hands in casts. Then, waves of pain washed over his entire body, as if he had just been run over by a truck.
He was in a room with a table made of silver-white metal. The blinding light came from a metal desk lamp on the table, and sitting across from him was a middle-aged man who looked like a federal official.
Maen abruptly moved his hand.
The middle-aged man smirked:
"Don't waste your effort. Did you think you were invincible just because you have some telekinetic abilities? No one in this world can stop superpowered individuals like you. Now you've learned your lesson, but it's too late."
Fear and panic surged in his chest. Maen could sense that "he" had no idea where the man across from him had come from, and he was terrified that he couldn't use his powers.
Seeing this, the middle-aged man smiled:
"Now you understand you're nothing special, you no longer think you're a god, you know there are still things in this world that can control you, and you finally regret it?"
As the man said this, Maen felt emotions of regret churning within him.
"I didn't want this, this isn't what I initially wanted..." he explained with some difficulty.
"It's too late," the middle-aged man interrupted. "You've already made a mistake."
He closed his mouth.
After a brief silence, the middle-aged man's tone relaxed a little:
"Although what you did was terrible, we do understand that you simply went astray. You can use this time to reflect on your actions, and when we meet again...
"I hope you can truly realize your mistakes."
Snap.
The desk lamp went out, darkness descended, and then...
The piercing shriek of an alarm and the flickering of a dark red light tore through the darkness simultaneously. As Maen fully mobilized his senses to observe his surroundings, he used the dim red light to make out the scene before him.
A pure white containment cell, and the familiar glass.
Except the glass was covered in fresh red blood, and the hallway was littered with mangled corpses. The ominous red light flickered on and off, and the mournful alarm was only audible to him, imprisoned as he was.
Then, he watched as he pressed his hand tightly against the glass, a surge of longing and anticipation rising within him.
When the red light went out again.
The crisp sound of shattering glass entered Maen's ears.
Then he saw nothing more, but he could feel intense excitement and tension, as well as the force lifting his body upwards, he was escaping this place...
He was breaking out.
As this thought arose, all the surrounding noise instantly dissipated, and the gentle sunlight streaming in through the window curtains pulled him back into that small and comforting bedroom.
The faceless boy standing outside the door raised his head and said:
"Satisfied? You enjoy seeing the cruel reality with your own eyes, don't you?"
Maen stared directly at him, not saying anything immediately.
The memories from before must have been pieced together. Those were the scenes he encountered at different stages of his life, making terrible mistakes, being easily subdued by Shenxiao, and then being captured...
The last scene was him escaping the containment cell.
This scene was completely different from what he had originally envisioned, but it was extremely logical. After all, he didn't have some kind of force called the Abnormal Control Bureau. The Abnormal Control Bureau had always existed independently.
So, if he continued to think based on these memories, perhaps he was just an escaped prisoner, and when the previous owners of this abnormal entity were slaughtered, he survived instead.
And he came with the Abnormal Control Bureau.
So, was the past him a bad person?
Because of Chen Yun, Maen had never considered that he might be a "bad person", but if he really calmed down to think about it, this possibility wasn't impossible.
Even if he was very evil, Chen Yun might be swayed by love, or he might be lying, and based on Maen's observation of himself after leaving the mental hospital, it wasn't impossible for him to become a bad person.
If anyone said that Shenxiao was a bad person in the previous world, he would quickly regard it as a lie.
Because the current Shenxiao was standing at the end of the road of goodness and justice.
She was almost the most extreme good person.
But he was completely different from Shenxiao. If it were him, he could indeed have been a bad person in the past, but in Maen's imagination, he should be more like a mastermind behind the scenes, rather than this prisoner.
In the moment of breaking away from the memory, Maen still strongly suspected whether these memories were the other party's lies, but those memories were so close to him, even closer than normal people could recall.
Colors, temperatures, smells, sounds, emotions, all churning in his mind.
So real, that he couldn't find any reason to escape.
Perhaps the faceless man messed up the order of his memories, reversing the truth through editing techniques, perhaps escaping from prison wasn't actually his last memory, but even so...
He had a terrible past.
That guy was nothing like the current him.
"If you really recover your memories," the faceless boy said, "you will become a person—a very bad and painful guy. You are very happy now."
"If that's me, I want to remember it," Maen said firmly, "Even if recovering my true memories brings severe pain, I accept the real me.
"And I believe I can withstand it."
What's more, these memories may have been tampered with.
The boy shook his head:
"Don't you understand? I am the protection mechanism in your head. Learn a little about medicine. I am stopping you from remembering because I abandoned those things for you. This is the best choice for both of us.
"It's precisely because you can't bear it, unwilling to accept it, that I exist."
Maen created a defensive barrier with his imagined telekinesis, then raised his hand towards the boy.
He said firmly:
"No, I have my own eyes, and I'm not afraid of my past."
Just as he was trying to tear the room apart with telekinesis, he suddenly felt himself being gently embraced by soft arms, and he immediately realized that these were the arms of the girl, Chen Yun.
He immediately prepared to crush these arms with telekinesis...
Unfortunately, he was still too slow.
Maen hesitated and paused instinctively for a moment...
That was enough.
