#701 - 689 The Nature of Fairies
The fairy scrutinized the group before her with a godlike and haughty gaze, seemingly contemplating how best to amuse herself, with little regard for their own desires.
But she certainly had the right to think that way.
Even if in an unnatural manner, the fragmented divine power of an ancient fairy did indeed reside within her, constantly seething and churning, as countless bubbles containing wishes attempted to surface into reality.
Ma En glanced sideways at the helmeted woman, his eyes questioning.
Should we make a move?
The helmeted woman didn't answer immediately, but instead stared intently in the fairy's direction, seemingly deep in thought, and only after a dozen seconds did she shake her head slightly.
We can't act rashly.
This is a tricky one, not the kind of enemy she could just hack away at with her sword, and one could even say that fairies are among the most dangerous creatures of this era.
They might not be the strongest, but few species surpass them in terms of danger.
Most fairies are actually quite non-aggressive; if you don't actively make a wish to them, there's a relatively high chance of leaving them safely, though of course, there are cases of bad luck.
Some fairies will stalk those who refuse to make a wish, waiting for the right opportunity to appear.
In the course of a long life, moments of despair are bound to arise.
And more powerful fairies will create those opportunities of despair themselves.
But the fairy before them seemed to be more than that; she didn't even need them to make a wish actively, and while these ordinary fairies lacked aggression, they were very capable of retaliation.
If anyone actively provoked them, they could unleash terrifying power equivalent to granting a wish; conversely, if you don't provoke them, they rarely pose a direct threat to humans.
But the fairy before them was already displaying considerable power even without being attacked, and attacking her would only lead to a situation far more terrible than the present one.
Initiating an attack was the worst possible choice, and the best option was to find a way to escape.
This was also Ma En's initial reaction.
"Go up," she said.
Hearing this, Ma En nodded slightly, and then everyone present floated into the air, soaring towards the sky like rockets, quickly moving away from the forest.
Watching their departing figures, the fairy revealed a sly smile.
Ma En and the others flew outwards without looking back.
But after a while, they were still surrounded by dense forest.
They quickly realized that something was wrong; the forest wasn't that vast, and everyone's expression grew increasingly serious as they understood what was happening.
Seri then said:
"Stop, let me handle this."
The group hovered in the air as Seri looked up at the sky, and the previously sunny day began to darken rapidly, as if curtains were being drawn across the sky.
The moon quietly emerged from the clouds.
The entire world was turning inside out, entering the moon god dimension on the back side of reality.
"Phew, let's go," Seri said casually.
However, they only flew forward for half a minute before seeing a lake as blue as a sapphire, its bright surface reflecting their plight back at them like a mocking mirror.
It seemed their escape wouldn't be so easy.
The helmeted woman spoke:
"It's rare to see a fairy this strong, but don't worry, the fact that she hasn't actively attacked us means she doesn't have a particularly strong offensive ability."
"But you must remember, never attack her first; if we do, this fairy will release all her restraints and use her terrifying power against us."
If not for the helmeted woman's repeated emphasis, they might have actually attacked the fairy.
And if they had, whatever the fairy did would be perfectly "reasonable."
Ma En asked:
"So what do we do?"
The helmeted woman thought for a moment and said:
"Since we can't escape, we might as well go down and see what tricks she's trying to play, but you must remember that fairies are inherently evil and cruel creatures, skilled at using words to 'deceive' mortals into walking to their doom."
"These creatures have only one weakness—they almost never truly lie."
Hearing this, Ma En wore a thoughtful expression:
"What does that mean? Are they unable to lie, or are they forbidden from lying?"
The helmeted woman replied:
"They can't. Perhaps there are a few special cases, but as far as I know, almost all fairies are incapable of lying, which is exactly the same as their legendary ancestors."
"But that doesn't mean she can't tell a 'lie', because some actual truths are actually lies to the listener. For example, granting you immortality is true, while subjecting you to eternal torment is just something left unsaid."
"Because of their inability to lie, they are actually better at deception than humans."
"So you must remain wary of her, and don't believe her words, because what she says may not be a lie to the fairy, but it's definitely completely different from what you imagine."
At this moment, Ma En thought of something:
"So what she just said is true, she doesn't intend to use bewitchment to deal with us, but wants to force us to participate in her so-called game."
The helmeted woman then reminded him:
"Or this is actually her misleading us. For example, her claiming not to like using deception doesn't mean she really won't do it, it might just mean she doesn't like it as much as other fairies do."
"And her claiming not to deceive us is somewhat convincing, but the fairies' restriction is only that they can't tell lies, not that they can't say wrong things, and certainly not that they have to abide by every word they've said."
"Her saying that only means that's what she thought at the time, but fairies can change their minds afterward. For example, they can say they'll never eat again at any time, but they can go back on their word in two minutes."
"It's just that this situation is relatively rare, because fairies tend to say whatever they think, and are so stubborn that they rarely change their minds, but we still need to be careful with this level of fairy."
Ma En thought of something:
"And regretting isn't what we need to worry about; it's actually easy to crack. Since they can't lie, we just need to ask her again whether she's using deception and misleading us."
"The best response she can make is silence, but silence itself is already the answer."
The helmeted woman nodded:
"And if she is as she thinks she is, then she's likely too disdainful to mislead us, so we can completely see what she wants to do before making a decision."
Actually, the best option was to stall her until she ran out of patience.
But Ma En's sister was in a dangerous situation, and time was running out…
Death was already closing in on her.
They had to fight for every second.
