I created the Bureau of Anomaly Control
#709 - 697 Incomplete Past
After enduring numerous hardships, our "four" little heroes valiantly overcame the fairy and, completely unharmed, resumed their quest to find the dragon.
Their journey onward proved quite smooth. Though occasional perils attempted to impede their progress, they "luckily" evaded these dangers, arriving at their ultimate destination with remarkable ease.
The sprawling Canwick Mountains obscured half the sky, tearing sharp lines across the blue canvas, creating the impression that venturing onto the peaks would result in one's feet being lacerated by jagged stones.
"The dragon is ahead," Yue said, gazing at the nearest peak. "It's the closest we've been."
The legendary, fearsome creature lurked within the distant mountains. This distance, insurmountable for ordinary mortals, seemed but a stone's throw for Mann and his companions.
Seri halted.
"Let's split up here. I'll use mental magic to link your senses with Yue's, helping you pinpoint the dragon's exact location. I won't participate in the direct combat. As you know, dragons possess scales that can resist magic, so I doubt I'd be of much help."
The helmeted woman nodded. Seri's words held truth. Most magic posed little threat to dragons, especially magic from the specialized realm of the mind.
The more indirect the magic, the harder it was to threaten a dragon.
Their scales could diminish any nature and effect—unless this power was something they could see and feel firsthand. For this very reason, most dragons deliberately avoided learning how to perceive magical changes.
Because if they understood the fundamental principles of magic, then magic would no longer be an illusion to them but a distinct force, and their scales' magic resistance would drastically decrease.
Therefore, the helmeted woman had brought a sword.
As long as it was slammed down fast enough, flesh would be torn apart.
This was a common understanding for all creatures.
"Ready?" Mann asked, looking at the others.
The helmeted woman gripped her sword tightly.
"Leave it to me."
Mann nodded.
"Seri, you two start locking onto its location. She and I will start preparing the railgun."
After saying this, Mann flew into the sky with the helmeted woman.
As they ascended, Seri led Yue quietly towards the mountain range. The dragon's precise location became increasingly clear, projected into Mann and the helmeted woman's minds through mental magic.
After pinpointing the dragon's location, Mann quickly set up the vacuum railgun. Since that practical exercise, they'd done a lot of training and fine-tuning, and this move was now close to perfect.
At least, it was as perfect as they could make it.
But whether it could truly defeat the dragon remained unknown.
As if sensing Mann's thoughts, the helmeted woman let out a reassuring chuckle.
"Don't worry. Although dragons are very strong creatures, we're only facing a young dragon, and the methods we're using bypass all of the dragon's strengths."
"We aren't using indirect magic. The attack exceeds the dragon's defensive limits, and we don't need to worry about the dragon's flight or breath attacks, and so on…"
"We've done the best we can."
Her tone carried a hint of comfort.
But Mann wasn't reassured. Instead, the doubts in his heart grew stronger, as if something he'd previously ignored was now becoming clear and obvious.
"No, it's the dragon that killed the trailblazers. Can we really win? And none of our other backup plans are as well-prepared as this one, nor do we have a good escape route."
"If we fail, we'll likely die here."
"Maybe we shouldn't rush into action. Instead, we should do more reconnaissance and preparation…"
Seeing his cautious analysis, a smile appeared on the face beneath the helmet.
Someone who didn't know him well might think that Mann was suddenly feeling nervous and anxious about the impending battle.
But this seemingly "nervous" atmosphere only made her feel a strong sense of reassurance.
A familiar reassurance.
"Do you believe me?" the helmeted woman suddenly asked.
Mann paused for a moment, then looked at her blankly as if he'd suddenly been awakened. He hesitated for a few seconds, as if the helmeted woman's question had reminded him of something strange.
"I do," he replied, his mouth skillfully uttering the answer before Mann could understand the feeling.
The helmeted woman said,
"Then just launch me. Leave everything else to me. Don't worry about what to do if we fail. I guarantee that nothing will go wrong. Start preparing the launch now."
They didn't have any extra time.
