I have a wizarding world
#89 - Going home for the New Year
In the car.
They were both silent, neither speaking, the car filled with smoke, making Xia Yuxuan cough.
"Cough, cough, cough!"
Hearing Xia Yuxuan's cough, Fang Cheng opened the car window, extinguished the cigarette and threw it out.
"Let's get out of the car," Fang Cheng coughed lightly.
"Okay," Xia Yuxuan responded softly.
They got out of the car one after the other. Fang Cheng pressed the car key, and with a "beep!" the car was locked.
"Are you... aren't you leaving?" Xia Yuxuan's small mouth opened slightly, her eyes widened, a little surprised.
"Now that I'm here, I have to visit Uncle and Aunt," Fang Cheng said with a smile, "What's wrong, aren't you welcome? Don't tell me you mind that I came empty-handed?"
"No... that's not what I meant..."
"What is it then?" Fang Cheng asked with a smile.
"Nothing, it's nothing," Xia Yuxuan lowered her head, not knowing what to say.
"Let's go," Fang Cheng took the lead and walked over, "What are you dazing about?"
"Okay, coming," Xia Yuxuan trotted over in a few steps.
From a distance, Li Huilan saw her daughter returning, but unlike usual, she was accompanied by a tall man in a suit.
"This child!" Li Huilan knew what was going on, frowning and scolding softly.
"Mom, I'm back," Xia Yuxuan shouted to Li Huilan from afar.
Following the sound, Fang Cheng looked at the middle-aged woman in front of him, in her forties, with some resemblance to Xia Yuxuan in her eyebrows and eyes. Seeing her pale face and shaky gait, it was clear that she was not in good health. She was wearing a brown down jacket, and Fang Cheng carefully observed that there was a patch of darker color on the hem of the down jacket.
Seeing this, Fang Cheng was a little surprised. In this day and age, city residents still wore patched clothes, obviously a habit formed by long-term poverty.
Li Huilan seemed to notice Fang Cheng's gaze and quickly used her hand to cover the hem of her clothes.
"You child, why didn't you let me know someone was coming in advance?" Li Huilan pulled Xia Yuxuan aside and scolded her softly.
"Auntie, hello, I'm Fang Cheng," Fang Cheng quickly greeted with a smile.
"Mom, let me introduce you, this is our..." Xia Yuxuan quickly interjected.
"I'm Yuxuan's boyfriend," Fang Cheng interrupted her before she could finish, completely disregarding Xia Yuxuan's surprised expression.
Li Huilan was a little at a loss, obviously a honest and law-abiding person. Hearing Fang Cheng say this, she was not prepared and didn't know what to say.
Li Huilan was stunned for a long time.
"Fang Cheng, right? Quick, come in and sit down," she quickly greeted.
"Okay, Auntie," Fang Cheng responded with a smile.
The group exchanged greetings and walked into the house. Fang Cheng looked around the room. It would be an exaggeration to say that Xia Yuxuan's family was destitute, but it was almost the same. There wasn't even a large appliance in the house, and the only color TV was a bulky, protruding-back model from more than a decade or two ago.
There was no air conditioner in the living room, only a ceiling fan. There were also several holes in the sofa. Judging by the age of these things, they were probably bought when Xia Yuxuan's parents got married. Seeing Fang Cheng staring at the sofa, Li Huilan quickly picked up a piece of clothing to cover the holes in the sofa.
"Fang..."
"Fang Cheng," Fang Cheng quickly added.
"Fang Cheng," Li Huilan said with a apologetic expression, "It's all because of this girl Yuxuan. Auntie didn't prepare anything for your visit, and the house isn't very tidy."
"It's not Yuxuan's fault, it should be mine. I insisted on her bringing me over to take a look. I thought to myself, since I'm also from Wucheng, and I've been brought here, I should come and see," Fang Cheng said, taking out a thick red envelope from his pocket, "Auntie, this is a New Year's gift for you."
"No, no, no, how can I accept your New Year's gift?" Li Huilan saw the red envelope in Fang Cheng's hand and quickly waved her hand.
"Auntie, I came in a hurry this time and didn't buy anything. You can't let me come empty-handed, or others will gossip. What do you think?"
After much persuasion, Li Huilan accepted Fang Cheng's red envelope.
"Fang Cheng, you're also from Wucheng?" Li Huilan was a little surprised.
"Yes, otherwise how could it be such a coincidence? Xia Yuxuan and I are in the same company and happen to be from the same city." As he said that, Fang Cheng laughed.
"It's quite a coincidence."
"Fang Cheng, there's no tea at home, only plain water." At this time, Xia Yuxuan brought a glass of plain water from the kitchen and handed it over. Fang Cheng quickly took it.
"Fang Cheng, you just said that you and Yuxuan work in the same company?"
"The latest novels are first published on Liu Jiu Shu Ba!"
"Yes, Auntie, she and I are in the same company but not in the same department." Fang Cheng's answer made Xia Yuxuan inexplicably nervous. Fortunately, Li Huilan only asked one question and didn't continue to pursue it.
Half an hour later.
"Fang Cheng, have dinner here today, Auntie will go buy some groceries." As she said that, Li Huilan stood up and was about to go out. "Yuxuan, you stay at home and talk with Fang Cheng."
"Okay, Mom," Xia Yuxuan responded.
"Auntie, don't buy too many groceries," Fang Cheng said loudly, seeing that Li Huilan hadn't left yet.
After watching Xia Yuxuan's mother leave, only Xia Yuxuan and Fang Cheng were left in the house, and the atmosphere suddenly became a little ambiguous.
"What's wrong? I've never seen you so reserved before?" Fang Cheng looked at Xia Yuxuan's uneasy appearance and smiled, pulling her onto his lap.
"I don't know, I just feel my heart beating so fast."
Fang Cheng looked at Xia Yuxuan's face, flushed like a ripe apple, and laughed.
"By the way, why didn't I see Uncle?" Fang Cheng asked curiously.
Hearing these words, the smile on Xia Yuxuan's face, which had been shy, disappeared, gradually turning pale.
"What's wrong?" Fang Cheng was a little puzzled.
"My father passed away before I went to college," Xia Yuxuan's voice was very soft, but Fang Cheng still heard it.
For a time, the atmosphere became a little heavy.
"I'm sorry, I didn't know..."
"It's okay," Xia Yuxuan also adjusted her emotions, with a forced smile on her face, "It's been a long time."
Hearing this, Fang Cheng was also silent. He realized that he really didn't understand Xia Yuxuan at all. His attitude towards her was more of a come-and-go mentality. Maybe he himself didn't realize it, or maybe he realized it, but didn't think much of it.
Originally, who could respect a woman who could be found in that kind of place? This was also the reason why Xia Yuxuan had always been so inferior in front of him.
He was sometimes curious, what did Xia Yuxuan want from him? If she wanted money, she never asked him for money. If she wanted a title? She had always been the nameless woman behind him, even if she knew he had a legitimate girlfriend, even if many executives in the company knew about his relationship with her, Xia Yuxuan never showed anything, and continued to do what she was supposed to do.
Fang Cheng couldn't think of a reason.
