In the Apocalypse, Hoarding Supplies with the System's Hundredfold Critical Hits
#117 - Chapter 117 Tolls
More than half a month had passed since the floodwaters receded. Countless survivors, carrying their meager possessions of dried meat or snake jerky, and filled with a mix of confusion about the future and a desperate desire for survival, trudged blankly along the roads towards the coast.
Li Ming had also made preparations for departure. Under the protection of three squads of special forces soldiers, he left the Malga City base aboard the Marauder, a modified doomsday vehicle.
They would be traveling along a main road, first checking the situation on the various roads leading into the Malga City area before heading to the coastal port via the ring road.
Li Ming's group, consisting of a convoy of four vehicles, drove along the road. It had to be said that the road was truly difficult to navigate. The mud within Malga City had been mostly cleared by Li Ming.
However, in areas far from Malga City, such as smaller towns, the mud on the roads had not been cleared at all. Baked by the intense sun, it had become hard and dry.
Fortunately, Li Ming's vehicles had powerful engines and had been modified for off-road capabilities, allowing them to travel on these roads.
The vehicles in the convoy were equipped with bulletproof glass and tinted windows, as well as curtains. Therefore, apart from Li Ming's vehicle, which was more conspicuous, the other vehicles looked ordinary.
However, even so, the convoy attracted attention. After all, this was the end of the world, and anyone with sufficient fuel to drive a car must be powerful, and the people inside must be important figures.
Li Ming had set off around eight in the morning, and they had been driving for over an hour. By nine o'clock, the heat of the sun had become quite intense.
Countless refugees noticed Li Ming's convoy. Their eyes gleamed with envy, jealousy, and hatred. Some even chased after the convoy, shouting, "Wait! Give us a ride!"
Li Ming ignored those who waved and tried to stop the cars. Some even more daringly threw themselves in front of the vehicles, attempting to morally blackmail Li Ming's convoy. Their thinking was simple: if you don't take me, I won't let you pass.
Li Ming didn't tolerate this behavior. He ordered, "Speed up! Ignore them!"
Soon, the roar of the vehicles' engines grew louder. Those who had been lying on the ground pretending to be dead immediately changed their expressions and scrambled to the side of the road, barely avoiding being run over.
Just as they were about to get up and curse the convoy, the spikes on the modified Paramount Marauder sliced through one of them, sending blood and internal organs splattering everywhere.
The other refugees were also startled. The man's screams cleared the minds of many, and they began to dodge to the sides of the road. Li Ming's convoy picked up speed.
Indeed, some people only respond to power, not virtue!
Li Ming sat in the back seat, looking out the window at the roadside. He noticed that many refugees were heading into the mountains, carrying backpacks and enduring temperatures of over 40 degrees Celsius as they traversed the terrain.
The sunlight on the mountains was still good, but some survivors lost their footing and tumbled down the slopes.
Some of those who fell never got up again, while others lay for a while before getting up and continuing their journey.
The surrounding refugees seemed accustomed to this scene, swarming to loot the belongings of the dead.
Li Ming frowned at this sight, wondering why these people were abandoning the road to walk in the mountains.
At this moment, his adjutant, Captain Wang Shuang, said to Li Ming, "Commander, there's a tollbooth ahead!" He then handed Li Ming a PDA with video and images transmitted from a drone.
Li Ming took the PDA and looked at it. Sure enough, there was a roadblock about two kilometers ahead.
The entrance to the road was blocked with various debris, leaving only enough space for a large truck to pass.
Next to the roadblock was a structure resembling a security booth with a wooden sign written in large red characters:
Single person: 5 catties of food, small car: 10 catties of food, large car: 40 catties of food.
In addition to the debris, there were also barricades with iron spikes blocking the road. You couldn't pass without paying the toll.
Li Ming was furious. He asked Captain Wang Shuang, "Secretary Wang, are there any of our bases near here?"
Wang Shuang looked at the location and shook his head. "Commander, the nearest base is over 50 kilometers away. Because this area is remote and far from the city, our sphere of influence doesn't really extend here."
Li Ming nodded, indicating that he understood. Then, he opened the communicator and issued the order, "Everyone, prepare for combat!"
The other three vehicles replied, "Roger!"
.......
The people at the roadblock saw the approaching vehicles, especially the convoy with three vans and the doomsday vehicle in the middle, which immediately caught their attention.
More than a dozen burly men walked out of the security booth, wielding a variety of weapons, including machetes and homemade clubs. The leader was carrying a handgun.
The man with the gun pointed it at the lead van and shouted, "Stop!"
Li Ming's convoy stopped. Then, the lead vehicle opened its side door, and eight or nine special forces soldiers in camouflage uniforms jumped out, holding HK416 rifles.
The leader of the thugs looked at the handgun in his hand and then at the weapons in the hands of these clearly military personnel, and was instantly stunned. The firepower was obviously not on the same level.
However, the special forces soldiers didn't care about their reaction. While they were still stunned, their HK416s opened fire.
Bang bang bang!
A series of gunshots rang out, and the dozen or so thugs were killed on the spot.
At this moment, a thug who had just come out from behind was so frightened by the scene that he wet his pants and his legs went weak, unable to run.
The squad leader coldly asked, "Where do you keep the supplies?"
The thug hadn't reacted yet when the squad leader kicked him hard. Then, the squad leader drew a military knife and held it to the thug's neck. "I'll ask you again, where are the supplies kept?"
Only then did the thug react. "Spare me! Spare me!"
"Are you deaf? Where are the supplies kept?" The squad leader applied slight pressure, and the cold blade instantly made the thug say, "I know the place, I'll take you there right away."
