#235 - Gail Regon's terrible memories under the Hesseburg
The destruction of Ugma's River Troll Warband and the giant River Troll Witch had a greater impact than Su Li and Earl Stein had anticipated.
As the corpses and bloody wreckage on the scarlet battlefield were discarded into the Blackwater River like the carcasses of stray dogs, in the forest sanctuary in the eastern Blackwater River Plain, the leaders of the monster legions erupted in fierce arguments and angry roars.
The Green Dragon's Thorn Throne was actually very close to Heissenburg, located in the Emerald Garden Forest east of the Purple Vine Noble Ranch, which was once home to beeches, oaks, and pines, an important source of barrels for the territory.
The remaining ancient ruins inside had been cleared, and the giant scorpions, night stalkers, and skin wolves that had been hiding inside had all been eliminated.
Then, High Druid Edmond used the divine spell [Create Sacred Forest] here, turning it into a beautiful shrine to the Goddess of the Dawn.
When the Green Dragon Legion attacked, the priests and nuns of the Church of the Dawn directed the people from the suburbs and ranches to retreat into the city, leaving this beautiful religious sanctuary behind.
The druids believed that the monsters from the forest would not desecrate this beautiful sanctuary.
They were indeed half right. After the Dryad Gaelrekon's forces arrived here, they turned it into a perfect forest camp. With the growth of a large number of vines, it became the dryads' most solid and reliable camp. In the sacred forest, these dryads' frontal combat ability might not even be weaker than that of a formal knight.
And the scale of these dryads, in this sacred forest alone, was more than 5,000.
So, if humans enter the forest to fight in certain specific home fields of monsters, it is really not an easy task to win. The difficulty is no less than that of monsters attacking human castles. After all, every race has its own unique defensive advantages.
But fortunately for humans, these monsters have serious infighting.
This beautiful forest, the dryads' powerful fortress, was largely destroyed when the Chaos Beast Chimera Scaroth entered, simply because the vines were uncomfortable for it. Scaroth's dragon head spewed flames, burning a large area of forest, vines, and vegetation into chaos, with lava-like fiery embers smoldering on the surface, to satisfy Scaroth's need for a comfortable sleep.
When in the forest, Gaelrekon and Scaroth had fierce disputes over its burning of trees.
Now, this beautiful [Sacred Forest] has been regarded as its precious palace by the dryad Gaelrekon. After being destroyed by Scaroth again, and coupled with the dissatisfaction with Scaroth's performance on the battlefield today, Gaelrekon's anger directly erupted.
This resentful, huge dryad had no patience and did not give anyone any face. In this sacred forest, it was the master who had the advantage of the home field, so it directly roared and tore into Scaroth.
"You despicable reptile, your despicable aura makes me sick. Today, you were clearly on the battlefield, why did you stand by and watch the River Troll Warband being annihilated without helping? You are timid in the face of humans, but dare to be wanton when entering the forest. Do you think I can't tear off your wings?"
As it roared, thick vines like iron chains bound Scaroth, almost piercing its hard scales and tearing off its wings alive.
And in this sacred forest, the dryad's magic was greatly enhanced by the Winds of Ghyran. Scaroth, this chaos beast, howled in pain, but could not break free from the shackles of these vines.
The severe pain greatly ignited Scaroth's anger, and it desperately stretched out its three heads, frantically tearing at Gaelrekon's body, with large amounts of branches and vines being torn from the dryad's body.
Then, on Gaelrekon's bloody wound, Scaroth's raptor head directly chiseled out a large hole. Subsequently, the lion head bit the dryad's body, allowing the dragon head to directly aim at the wound and violently spew out a terrifying dragon breath.
The destructive power of this fire dragon breath was something that even a Chosen-level monster could not withstand. Gaelrekon's body seemed to be on fire, collapsing with a rumble, stirring up large swaths of rubble and dust, and knocking down more than a dozen giant trees.
Then, Scaroth decisively used the [Gift of the Ancient Dragon], allowing it to have a steel body for a dozen seconds, forcibly breaking the dozen thick chains that bound it.
But it didn't dare to stay on the ground any longer, flapping its huge wings and flying away, dodging the huge vines rushing from all directions of the forest.
Within the Sacred Forest, Gaelrekon was almost invincible. Stepping on the earth, it was equivalent to obtaining an enhanced version of the Chosen-level [Blood of the Earth], which could constantly restore its injuries.
But Scaroth's [Gift of the Ancient Dragon] had a usage interval, and it was obviously at a disadvantage to continue fighting.
The Green Dragon Aeryllia and its loyal lackey, the Elemental Bear Ostank, coldly watched their battle from the Thorn Throne.
This was an almost unimaginable scene for humans. The extremely important decisive battle had already broken out, but the most important generals within the army not only did not unite, but instead fought each other in front of all the monsters, causing the earth to shake and a large area of trees to collapse.
This was like the great war was imminent, but Hild and Earl Stein fought each other to the point of drawing their swords, and then Su Li sat on the chair and remained indifferent. It could be said to be an absurd scene.
But the monsters were very indifferent to this. They were accustomed to fierce struggles. As long as the battle was won, the strong would automatically gain the support of everyone.
And the Green Dragon Aeryllia only raised her golden eyes after the two had determined the winner, looked at Scaroth, and coldly questioned: "You lowly worm, you should explain why I arranged for you to support the River Trolls, but you only watched from the sidelines. Are humans so terrifying that they scared you witless?"
Scaroth immediately roared angrily: "Let me go up, why don't you go up? There is only one Chosen One on the human side, and another Chosen One is hiding behind. If I go up, wouldn't I be smashed like the River Troll Witch?"
Although the Green Dragon's style has always been like this, accustomed to hiding behind its claws, and only revealing its sharp fangs to give the enemy a fatal blow when it has the advantage.
But in Scaroth's view, this was an unfair performance. Why should it hide behind to preserve its strength, waiting to pick the fruits of victory, but question others' similar behavior, forcing others to risk their lives against humans? It has always had the ambition to turn the tables and suppress the Green Dragon, so naturally it was indignant.
Aeryllia was instantly enraged by its questioning, and directly leaped from the Thorn Throne, its huge wings blocking out the sky, and two terrifying behemoths confronted each other in the sky.
"Damn reptile, it's been too long since I taught you a lesson, you dare to roar at your master!"
With its dragon roar, the dragon language magic [Entangling Roots] was instantly activated, and overwhelming vines grew from the ground, directly dragging Scaroth from the air to the ground. The monster's huge body crashed to the ground, smashing a pit dozens of meters wide, stirring up countless dust and broken wood.
This magic, even when released by the powerful Green Dragon, can only bind the Chaos Beast Chimera for a few short seconds.
But these few seconds were enough. The mountain-like behemoth, the Elemental Bear Ostank, leaped up from under the Thorn Throne, and then pounced on Scaroth, which had been bound and crashed to the ground. Its head, larger than a room, bit off Scaroth's raptor head in one bite. The raptor could only wail in pain, with only a layer of flesh barely connecting its avian head and neck. A large amount of flesh and blood was directly swallowed by Ostank.
The pain caused the dragon head and lion head to roar and roar wildly. The reckless dragon head still wanted to counterattack, but Ostank's huge bear paw directly pressed its neck, rubbing its head hard into the ground. Then, its bloody mouth bit the back of the lion head's neck again.
In terms of close combat, this chaos monster was obviously not a match for the Elemental Bear, especially since its body was bound by the Green Dragon's dragon language magic, which was equivalent to a person challenging a giant bear with only its neck. It was only a matter of time before it was killed.
Ostank's rough head obviously wouldn't think too much. Since Aeryllia was fighting this monster, it would tear apart all of Aeryllia's enemies before Aeryllia spoke.
Fortunately, Aeryllia knew that it could no longer lose this chaos monster.
If Scaroth was really killed by its own side, then the sound of humans laughing wildly in the castle could be heard all the way to the Blood Pine Forest.
And as the Entangling Roots ended, this chaos monster was about to struggle to get up.
If it really fought desperately, even if it could take it down, Ostank might be severely injured.
At that time, the dryad Gaelrekon's ambition would be difficult to suppress!
Aeryllia certainly knew Scaroth's ambition. But Scaroth's three heads each had their own opinions, making it difficult to make a unanimous decision to launch a fatal rebellion.
But Gaelrekon was different. Its rebellion was almost an open secret, with only a matter of time left.
There could only be one master in the western Blood Pine Forest, and it and its dryad legion were already dissatisfied with the Green Dragon's rule as an outsider.
Now it was only wary of Ostank's deterrence, so it hadn't turned its face and proposed a duel.
But once Ostank was seriously injured, it would definitely launch a fatal rebellion immediately, commanding tens of thousands of dryads to swarm the Thorn Throne.
So after the Entangling Roots ended, Aeryllia felt that the lesson for it was enough, and then used a spell [Scare] on it.
This was a standard Ghyran spell, used by green dragons, druids, emerald mages, etc. It could be used to deal with any single or group of natural animals, including mounts. Affected creatures would uncontrollably flee from the mage as quickly as possible due to fear.
Coupled with the Dragon Fear talent, the effect of this scare spell was extremely significant.
Scaroth was so frightened that its tail curled up, rolling away into the distance, no longer daring to have any ambition to challenge the Green Dragon.
Aeryllia then snorted appropriately: "You lowly servant, remember today's lesson. If there is a next time, I will personally bite off your head and swallow it!"
Scaroth's three heads drooped, the dragon head whimpering in a low voice, like a hound with its head down and bared teeth, but the lion head didn't dare to lift its head, looking sideways with a guilty conscience. The most terrified was undoubtedly the raptor head. It was naturally timid, and this time it suffered the most serious injuries, so it was particularly weak and docile. It just wanted to find a place to lick its wounds quietly.
"My beautiful, powerful, and noble dragon master, we have recognized our mistakes today. After I heal my wounds, we will go all out for your next attack and respectfully execute all your orders."
Its weak and submissive appearance made Aeryllia very satisfied. Teaching it a lesson was also a powerful deterrent to Gaelrekon.
At least it could clearly see how easily it could be taught a lesson if it dared to resist. After all, just now, it had suffered a small loss at Scaroth's hands.
And in the next battle, Aeryllia needed Gaelrekon and its dryads to serve as the main force.
So after Aeryllia sat back on the Thorn Throne, she raised her golden eyes and said to Gaelrekon: "Scaroth, that waste, needs to heal for a while. I will give it a potion to help it recover as soon as possible. The task of attacking human towns will be entrusted to you next."
Gaelrekon did not angrily question Aeryllia like Scaroth. Its style was always insidious: "Of course there is no problem with me serving as the main force of the attack. But which direction should we attack from? How should we deal with the human knight order? If these are not resolved, I think it will be difficult for our attack to be effective and will only cause my children to die in vain."
Gaelrekon was essentially throwing the problem back to Aeryllia. If it couldn't solve the problem of the human cavalry's attack, don't blame the dryads for failing to take the city.
No army can forcibly take a city while being constantly harassed by the enemy.
Gaelrekon's insidious words made Aeryllia a little angry. Almost no dragon had a gentle temper. Her cold eyes stared at Gaelrekon and roared: "Do your job! Idiot, I know more about how to fight a war than you do."
The anger in Gaelrekon's resentful eyes was almost about to spread, but listening to the low growl in Ostank's throat, as if it might attack it at any time, it restrained its impulse.
This was not the right time to turn against the Green Dragon. If they really fought here, it would be difficult for it to gain an advantage.
So it still turned around and left with a gloomy face. This battle was its best opportunity to weaken the Green Dragon with the help of humans.
The Green Dragon's claws, dependents, and monsters had almost been completely lost. In the next long siege, as long as it could preserve its strength, it would soon be able to get a turning point!
So it could only take its troops and prepare to go to the siege. The dryad legion was very suitable for this kind of frontal battlefield battle. They could hide in the forest. Unless there was close contact, the enemy would not be able to find them.
At the same time, dryads were also cold-hearted and vicious creatures. In the dryad's soul, there was no room for a trace of pity or kindness. There was only unwavering loyalty and dedication to the forest. Whether it was the most sincere oath of elves or humans, it was not worth mentioning compared to it. Those who dared to do the slightest harm to the forest would arouse their terrible revenge, and there was no room for negotiation, only death.
When they gather together, reaching a sufficiently large scale, they can even set up vines to resist charges, and then the Treants hidden within the ranks will strike, wreaking havoc on the opponents.
This is a more advanced type of Forest Treant, comparable to a troll in terms of size, strength, and all other aspects. Although they lack the ability to regenerate, their attacks are magical!
Even the knight's tin-can-like steel armor provides significantly reduced protection against the Treant's attacks.
Gale Ragon believed that as long as he was cautious, even if he couldn't capture the city, he would certainly be able to inflict heavy damage on the enemy.
As long as fewer Treants die than other Green Dragon minions, then with this ebb and flow, it will soon have a stronger military force than the Green Dragon.
But soon, reality gave it a tragic lesson.
In just three days, Gale Ragon, who had confidently walked out of here, had to return to the Sacred Forest in a disheveled state, covered in wounds, begging the Thorn Throne for help.
"My respected master, we must find a way to restrain these human knights!"
His voice was filled with boundless resentment, endless humiliation, and gnashing hatred: "These despicable humans have already shattered three of my Treant legions!"
"Our army surrounded the city on all sides, launching fierce attacks, but whenever we tried our best and were exhausted, this knightly order, led by human Chosen Knights, would appear on a battlefield!"
Speaking of this, Gale Ragon was still filled with lingering fear; it was simply a terrifying scene.
Beneath the walls of Blackwood Keep, the sky was stained blood-red by the fires of war, and the air was filled with a strong smell of gunpowder and a pungent stench of blood.
Gale Ragon's Treant legions fought to the death with the human army in the castle's defenses. The Treants' performance was undeniably valiant; they fiercely attacked all of the human defenses. Both sides had exhausted all their strength, fighting amidst mountains of corpses and seas of blood.
However, just as the Treants, relying on their powerful strength and tenacious vitality, were about to repel the human defenders, the human cavalry burst out from another direction of the city. They were clad in armor that shone with the golden light of the blazing sun, wielding sharp swords, and riding tall warhorses, like divine soldiers descending from the heavens. Led by a valiant human Chosen Knight, they charged towards the Treant legions with lightning speed.
The result was beyond doubt!
Gale Ragon only remembered the Chosen Knight raising the holy sword in his hand, letting out a deafening roar, as if summoning the power of justice between heaven and earth. The holy sword, illuminated by the sunlight, emitted a dazzling light, like a bolt of lightning piercing through the darkness, directly stabbing into the heart of the Treant legion. The knights followed closely behind, their swords waving like a storm, each swing bringing up a bloody rain.
Although the Treants were brave, they seemed particularly weak in the face of these well-rested human elite knights. Their vines were easily cut off by the knights' swords, and their trunks were mercilessly trampled by the warhorses' hooves.
Gale Ragon watched his Treant soldiers fall one by one, his heart filled with anger and despair. But under the command of the Chosen Knight, the human knights, like an unstoppable flood, overwhelmed the Treant legions' defenses, forcing them to retreat.
Gale Ragon was even severely wounded by the human knights, and one of his arms was almost cut off. He could only lead the remaining Treant soldiers, cursing the humans' despicable and ungentlemanly behavior, and flee back into the depths of the forest in panic.
This same scene had happened at least three or four times. From a macro-strategic perspective, the Treant legions had repeatedly suffered disastrous defeats.
Although they numbered in the tens of thousands, marching mightily towards the human fortress, they fought extremely frustratingly, and their command was also chaotic.
Their attacks were firmly blocked by the humans and dwarves amidst layers of fortifications, and their tactical offensives had failed to make any breakthrough progress.
But strategically, they were a complete failure, because in the process of their mighty siege of Blackwood Keep, they encountered sudden raids by human knights in several directions. These knights rested and recuperated in the city, and then launched raids when the Treant legions were most exhausted.
They had actually hacked an entire attacking Treant legion into pieces at least twice, and almost no Treants were able to escape. The human knights, through their mobile advantage, completely achieved the advantage of defeating the enemy one by one, forming a situation of using more to fight less and using strength to strike weakness on the battlefield. Once the Treant legion's morale collapsed, facing the cavalry's pursuit, not even one in ten could escape, after all, their mobility was extremely poor.
On one or two other occasions, the cavalry legions had completely defeated all of the Green Dragon's minions in an entire direction. When the cavalry legions launched their charge, fear spread dramatically, and all the Treants and monsters that were attacking the city had their morale collapse, and they retreated from the fortifications all over the mountains and plains, with dense masses of routed soldiers covering the battlefield.
This made Gale Ragon's venomous heart almost jump out, with both uncontrollable anger and panicked confusion.
This was very unfavorable for the monster legions. Their attacks had been consistently unsuccessful, but the attacking legions were repeatedly defeated, and one after another were completely annihilated, which was an unparalleled blow to morale.
At least now the Treants had reached a consensus! If they could not restrain these human knights, they would never be able to break through the human fortress in front of them.
Many Treants had even refused to continue attacking the city at such a great risk. When the human knights appeared, it meant that they were almost certain to die. They demanded that Gale Ragon refuse the Green Dragon Queen's brutal order, or at least that the Green Dragon Queen come up with a deployment that could win, before they would continue to attack.
The sound of the human knights charging had truly become a terrible nightmare that haunted all the monsters' nights!
