Make France Great Again
Chapter 32 Workers' Riots
"We want bread!"
"We want to work!"
"We want universal suffrage!"
"We need rest, sleep, and a nine-hour workday!"
The crowd starting from the entrance of the cafe shouted and vented their dissatisfaction in hysterical voices. The double blow of the bankruptcy of the railway speculation and the failure of the Irish potato harvest made this already overwhelmed and impoverished worker completely fall into hell. They don't want to experience the despair of watching their children die of hunger.
Since they (meaning the bureaucracy and the UK elite) say that all men are created equal.
Why are people in the West District able to live comfortably without suffering from hunger and disease, while they can only curl up in dark corners to eat the leftover food of those people.
Is it really because they didn't try hard enough?
This world should not be like this!
The ignorant class view of the workers sensed the deceit from London's upper class, but they couldn't tell what was going on.
The simple class view makes them believe that there must be people in this world who are willing to help them.
Now someone who is willing to "help" them has come. He (a member of the Chartist movement) told them (workers) to fight for their rights, bread and work, and they did part of what they promised [Note 1] , they (referring to the workers) will also obey their (referring to the Chartist) command and strive for more rights and interests for themselves.
The procession slowly moved towards St. Martin's Church, and new workers continued to join them on the way to St. Martin's Church.
A team that originally only had more than 100 people has gradually expanded to more than 200 people.
Looking from St. Martin's Church towards London Bridge, it is also possible to see many workers gathered together as if to cross London Bridge to the West End.
The thirty or so policemen around St. Martin's Church couldn't help swallowing when they saw the workers who were several times larger than them.
They are no match for those who are only equipped with muskets. Those "untouchables" who are slightly inferior to them can tear them to pieces just by swarming them.
Some of the policemen almost ran away due to the pressure.
If it weren't for the fact that more than a dozen regular police officers entered the venue at the right time.
The head of more than a dozen policemen was a fat man with a big belly. He was wearing a dark green uniform with a medal on his chest. A traditional aristocrat with the power to bind chickens.
"Sir, what should we do now!" The police in charge of support asked with some fear as they looked at the mighty crowd.
After looking at the mighty crowd in the distance, the fat police officer had a terrified expression. He glared fiercely at the policeman who wanted him to make up his mind.
Which bastard told me that there were only a dozen or so demonstrators!
The one who was stared at by the fat policeman could only lower his head and not allow the fat policeman to look at him.
Now that he has come here, he must not let this group of "untouchables" rush in rashly.
Otherwise, the nobles in the West District would have skinned him.
The fat policeman couldn't help but shudder when he thought of the dark eyes of the Metropolitan Police Chief.
"What else can I do!" The fat policeman gritted his teeth and said in a low voice: "We must not let these guys in, otherwise, I will be finished!"
Pleasing to the eye, the fat policeman glanced at the regular policeman beside him and added: "I'm finished! You guys are having a hard time too! You scumbags, idiots, villains, don't think that I don't know what you do on weekdays !"
More than a dozen regular policemen couldn't help feeling tense, they knew very well what they were doing on weekdays.
If the Fat Cop does fall,
I'm afraid they won't have a good time either.
Those colleagues who are not yet in the system don't mind reporting their "crimes" to the Metropolitan Police Department to replace them.
"But, sir, our current strength is simply not enough!"
"Don't worry, I'll report the situation to the police department in a while! I believe they will continue to send more personnel, besides, there are still them?" The fat policeman pointed at Jerome Bonaparte and others as a matter of course. "We have more than 50 people in total. I don't believe we can't stop those untouchables! Are they really not afraid of guns?"
Afterwards, the fat policeman pointed his halberd proudly at the vigilante and said, "You all must obey my orders now, do you understand?"
"That..." Jerome Bonaparte led Hamm forward and said, "I'm just an innocent passerby, not a vigilante, so can you let me go!"
"No!" The fat policeman said rudely to Jerome Bonaparte: "Every resident has an obligation to stop this riot!"
The fat policeman who fell into a nameless rage wanted to split a person in half for use, how could he let Jerome Bonaparte leave.
"Okay!" Jerome Bonaparte could only return to the team, holding the revolver pinned to his waist in his hand.
The parade took only 5 minutes before they arrived in front of the Stability Maintenance Brigade, which was composed of vigilantes and police.
The fat policeman hiding behind the regular policeman looked at the group of workers with resentment and numbness in their eyes and said, "You pigs, untouchables, who let you participate in the parade! Who organized you! Your behavior is Betrayal of the United Kingdom, you are treason!"
The fat policeman's tactic of grabbing the lead was really effective. After hearing the word "treason", some workers couldn't help but take a small step back.
There was a small-scale riot in the workers' team of more than 200 people, and Jerome Bonaparte among the vigilantes couldn't help shaking his head secretly.
The discipline and combat effectiveness of workers who have not undergone formal military training are not even as good as a herd of pigs. Only when workers have undergone complete military training and become iron-disciplined can they compete with the regular army.
In this extremely critical situation, the man standing at the front stepped forward and said, "We have no use for treason, and we don't want to conflict with you! We only want to fight for the rights we deserve, and we have tried too much. They negotiated, but never heard back every time! In the end we found that this is the only way to make them value us!"
PS: 1. Thanks to the short-term collapse of the old two parties in 1847, there was a brief period of chaos in the political arena of the United Kingdom. The Chartists took advantage of the momentum and petitioned for a bill specifying ten hours of work. Under pressure, the United Kingdom court agreed Chartist petition. Although the ten-hour working day bill was passed by the royal court, fundamentally speaking, it did not improve the interests of workers.
