Chapter 3: Trust

"Of course it's me!" Yang Biao sneered, "You sure know how to run. You've run all the way to the slums. But it's only right to pay back your debts. Do you think hiding in the slums means we can't find you at the Wuyou Gambling House?"

"I will repay it."

Li Yun aimed his bow and arrow firmly at the tall man who posed the greatest threat to him. If he made any wrong move, Li Yun would shoot an arrow through his heart.

The arrival of these two men was a result of the previous owner's misdeeds. They were both from the Wuyou Gambling House. The previous owner had borrowed money from them when he was on the verge of madness from gambling. Unable to repay the large sum, he ran to the slums to hide from his debts.

Although Li Yun had anticipated that they would come looking for him, he didn't expect it to be so soon.

"Repay? Good. You borrowed fifteen taels of silver from us a month ago. The deadline has passed, and according to the interest rate, you should repay twenty-five taels of silver to the gambling house."

Yang Biao smiled and spoke with a playful expression, as if he was looking at a toy. "Just repay it, and we'll leave. From then on, all grudges will be settled."

Li Yun, with a hint of anger in his tone, said, "How can it be twenty-five taels? You must have taken over my house in the town. That house could be sold for at least ten taels. What kind of interest rate is this? Are you sucking people's blood?"

"What are you talking about? What do you mean by sucking people's blood? It was clearly stated in black and white. The Wuyou Gambling House is an honest and trustworthy place in Chunyang Town. Repay the money, don't waste our time."

Yang Biao said impatiently.

"I can't repay it. I don't have a single penny now," Li Yun said, looking helpless. These people were clearly trying to cheat him. What kind of ridiculous interest rate would increase the debt by fifteen taels of silver in just one month?

What does fifteen taels of silver mean? In the Great Yuan Country, when there is no major disaster, it is enough to feed a family of three for more than two years!

Even if Li Yun had the money, he didn't want to repay it.

"Heh," Yang Biao seemed accustomed to this situation, laughed, and pointed inside the house. "My brother Li, don't pretend with us. Isn't the boy inside the house the one you picked up specifically to repay your debt? How about this, you sell him to us, and you can repay ten taels of silver. How about that?"

Did they discover Xiao Rou?

Li Yun's heart turned cold, and his gaze became even colder. "No matter what, I will repay the money to you in a while. Both of you should leave now. I don't provide meals here."

"You..." Yang Biao's expression froze, and he was about to get angry, but the strong young man beside him stopped him.

"Xiao Yang, let's go first. We're in a hurry to find the next person. This Li brother doesn't seem like someone who breaks his word. Giving him two days won't hurt," the young man said with a smile, his body tense and straight like a sharp sword.

"This..." Yang Biao looked at Li Yun, then at the young man. After a change in expression, he snorted coldly. "Fine, let's listen to Brother Wang. Li Yun, we'll give you two more days. I hope you can gather enough silver by then!"

After saying that, the two of them left in another direction.

Li Yun kept his bow drawn, aiming at the back of the young man until they completely disappeared into the snow. Only then did he release the bow and arrow, feeling a long sigh of relief in his heart.

When Yang Biao mentioned Xiao Rou, he had the intention to kill.

If these two continued to be aggressive, he would have to take action and find a way to keep them here. With the archery skills of the previous owner, there was a high probability of severely injuring or even killing the strongest young man at this distance. He might even pay the price to kill Yang Biao.

But what would happen afterwards? Even if he could kill them, he would definitely be injured. Moreover, he had no roots or connections in this world, while the Wuyou Gambling House was their backing. Killing them would undoubtedly attract pursuit.

It's not worth it!

It's better to leave... It's better to leave.

Taking a deep breath, Li Yun picked up some food and gently knocked on the door. "Xiao Rou, it's me."

A few seconds later, the door opened.

Li Yun walked into the room, closed the door, and looked at the petite Xiao Rou, whispering, "I'm sorry, Xiao Rou, I didn't know they would come."

"It's okay, I don't mind," Xiao Rou shook her head, her expression calm, showing no signs of panic.

She thought for a moment and said, "Uncle, why don't you sell me to them?"

"..."

Li Yun was stunned by her words. He looked at Xiao Rou's calm yet terrifying face, and his expression gradually became serious. "Why?"

"Uncle," Xiao Rou whispered, "you took me in for this moment, right?"

With a slight smile, Xiao Rou's dark face suddenly became lively. "Uncle, you don't have to worry about me. I've been a beggar for many years and I can escape from their hands."

Li Yun sighed, "Xiao Rou, why would you think of me that way? I took you in because I thought you were like me in the past."

After speaking, Li Yun threw three medicine packets from his clothes to Xiao Rou. "I know you have caught a cold. I bought three days' worth of medicine. The doctor at that medical clinic is very skilled. Take the medicine on time, and you'll be fine in a couple of days."

After saying that, Li Yun didn't say anything else. He put down his bow and arrows and walked into the house.

Xiao Rou held the three packets of medicine, still warm from Li Yun's body, and stood there in a daze. It took her more than ten breaths before she came back to her senses.

She looked at Li Yun's room, silently put the medicine into her embrace, gritted her teeth, and dragged the heavy sack of rice to the stove to wash the rice and cook.

As the aroma of the food gradually spread, Xiao Rou looked at the half-melted snow in the barrel, as if she had made a certain decision. She carefully scooped out some water and washed her face.

...

Li Yun was really exhausted. He dragged over a hundred catties of grain back to the shantytown, confronted Yang Biao with a tense mind, and then felt Xiao Rou's lack of trust.

Feeling mentally exhausted, Li Yun didn't want to say anything more. When he returned to his room, he fell asleep immediately.

Usually, he would toss and turn for a long time, but now he fell asleep in an instant.

It wasn't until his stomach was about to explode from hunger that the intense feeling of hunger burst forth and woke Li Yun from his sleep.

Li Yun sat up abruptly, his sleepy eyes looking at the snow-white outside the window.

Hungry, so hungry.

Bang, bang.

The door of the room was lightly knocked. Without thinking, Li Yun said, "Come in."

The door opened, and the aroma of food wafted in. Xiao Rou, with her little hands red, held a bowl of steaming rice and another small bowl of cabbage, and gently placed them on the bedside table. "Uncle, I called you to eat yesterday, but you didn't wake up. I reheated the food, and I added some oil to the cabbage. Please eat."

"Oh, okay, thank you," Li Yun nodded and picked up the rice bowl, immediately starting to eat.

Xiao Rou stood obediently by the side.

After Li Yun took a few bites, he looked at Xiao Rou, about to say something, but almost choked when he saw her.

"Xiao... Xiao Rou?"

"What's wrong?" Xiao Rou smiled and looked at Li Yun with a puzzled expression. Her eyes, like crescent moons, were sweet and charming.
