#112 - Question of the Holy Beast
“Not now, please, not now.”
Yaro was drenched in cold sweat, lowering his head to avoid any interaction with Meng Jias.
“Damn it, this is a Sacred Beast! It's not like the previous ones. If I transform Her, I'll become a major sinner! I'll be nailed to the pillar of historical shame!”
His heart thumped wildly, desperately praying that Meng Jias would quickly shift her attention away from him.
Fortunately, Meng Jias only glanced at him before turning her gaze away. Yaro cautiously peeked up and breathed a sigh of relief when he saw that she was no longer paying attention.
However, he felt a chill in his heart. Why did Meng Jias notice him just now? Could it be that being locked on by the system made her sense something?
He shook his head, thinking it might just be his imagination.
On the high platform, Meng Jias retracted her gaze, lowering her head slightly, seemingly pondering something.
“What's wrong? Your Excellency Meng Jias?” Vice-Principal Hagen asked, standing beside her.
“Nothing, just an illusion.” Meng Jias said.
In truth, she had felt some doubt in her heart just now, because she had inexplicably sensed a strange feeling from that direction, as if there was a connection to something in the dark.
However, she couldn't just halt the assessment for such an uncertain illusion and have all the examinees come over for individual checks.
Thus, the assessment began.
Today's assessment was divided into two parts: a basic magic power test and a simulated combat assessment.
The basic magic power test had three questions, and the examinees went up to the high platform one by one to be tested.
The first was a free demonstration: directly show the examiners the spell you are most comfortable with.
The second was a lottery draw. The lot would have a three-line spell incantation, and after drawing it, you needed to perfectly cast the spell.
The third was a magic power control assessment. The examiner would give you a can of special liquid, and you needed to use your magic power control to shape it into a spherical water ball. The more perfect the shape, the higher the score.
There were three examiners in total, and they would score each test, then take a comprehensive score, which would be the final grade.
The examinees went up one by one. Even those who had passed the written test still had extremely poor magic power levels. One person, during the initial free demonstration, only managed a small illumination spell. The spell he drew in the lottery also took him forever to cast, and he left in tears before even starting the third question.
Vice-Principal Hagen and Meng Jias stood on the high platform, watching the students being assessed below.
Behind them, a professor watched the assessment for a long time and couldn't help but sigh:
“The quality of this batch of examinees is not very good.”
“Fragrant wood stands out even in rotten forests, Teacher Moller, you are too impatient.” Hagen chuckled.
He looked at the Sacred Beast on the side: “Your Excellency Meng Jias, have you seen any students of interest?”
Meng Jias shook her head: “Not yet.”
“I see. It seems 'that matter' won't be so easy to accomplish.” Hagen sighed slightly.
Meng Jias did not respond to Hagen's statement, but continued to silently watch the people being tested below.
“Serena Edson!”
The examiner called Serena's name, and she walked up the steps of the high platform.
“Go, Serena! You're the best!” Yaro cheered her on from below.
Serena turned her head embarrassedly to glare at him, then walked onto the high platform and stood in front of the three examiners.
“The first question, please begin.” An examiner said.
Serena first paid her respects, then closed her eyes. Without chanting an incantation, she directly raised her hand, and a milky white light flickered on her body. Then, it suddenly spread out, enveloping her body. The light quickly solidified into a concrete shape. It was actually a pure white stag, standing behind Serena, huge in size, raising its front leg and letting out a long cry.
“Oh? A four-line spell, the White Deer Divine Spell? And she actually cast it without chanting,”
Hagen said in surprise on the high platform.
Someone behind him came forward and told him: “This student named Serena was the first in the written test, and even if you include the scores from the official admissions, she is still the first.”
Hearing this, Hagen stroked his white beard, his eyes narrowed with pleasure: “I told you, fragrant wood stands out even in rotten forests.”
He looked at Meng Jias on the side, but found that the Sacred Beast's expression still hadn't changed.
The stag behind Serena slowly disappeared, and the white light also dissipated.
The three examiners in front of her finally showed approving expressions: “Not bad, a four-line spell without chanting, and a very difficult White Deer Divine Spell. Very perfect. I think you can pass even if you skip the next two questions.”
“Let's continue, teachers,” Serena said politely.
She flawlessly cast the spell she drew in the lottery.
At the final magic power control stage, Serena wrapped the can of liquid with her magic power. When she had just taken it out, her expression changed slightly, but she quickly recovered and smoothly controlled the liquid, condensing it into a perfect sphere.
The three examiners gave her a very high score. Serena's score was currently the highest among everyone.
Coming down from the high platform, Yaro immediately came up to her.
“How was it?”
“The liquid in the last question is a weak magic power conducting material, which is more difficult to control. Pay attention to it.” Serena said to him in a low voice.
“Yaro!”
At this time, his name was called on the stage. Giving Serena a thumbs up, he jogged onto the high platform.
Standing in front of the three examiners, he first gave a small salute, then raised his hand. Five burning fireballs rolled around his body. Pointing upwards, the fireballs rose up and exploded in the air like fireworks.
A very basic fireball spell, but he summoned five at once, and without chanting.
In fact, he could have used a higher-level spell, but considering some uncertainties, he chose the simplest, yet very unusual, five-shot fireball spell.
“Another student with the talent for non-chanting, and with a high level of magic power. This extra recruitment is really lucky.”
Hagen chuckled, turning his head to look at the Sacred Beast again, but found that Meng Jias had disappeared.
“Examiners, did I pass the first question?” Yaro asked the three examiners.
The three examiners exchanged glances and then nodded, giving him a very high score, only 0.5 points lower than Serena's.
Yaro breathed a sigh of relief, then walked towards the box with the lot slips for the second round.
But at this moment, a warm, fragrant breeze came from behind him. He turned his head and saw the sacred and pure white Sacred Beast standing in front of him, standing tall and graceful, her light golden pupils calmly looking at him.
Meng Jias spoke to him, making a gentle, ethereal sound:
“Why do you have the soul fragments of the Silver Moon Dragon Zeccia, the Blazing Sun Dragon Elga, a Feathered Serpent God, and four other creatures on you?”
