Mystery: I Married the Queen of Mystery
#33 - Underground Fighting Arena
The middle-aged man was stunned by Audiss's question, then smiled and said, "As long as you don't call the police, it's not illegal."
"A match, 5 pounds for a win, 3 pounds even if you lose, how about it? Isn't it a good deal?"
Audiss then understood that it was underground boxing, or to put it nicely, no-holds-barred fighting.
It sounded quite lucrative. Most middle-class people in Backlund earned between 3 and 8 pounds a week. To be precise, earning more than 6 pounds meant you were a relatively wealthy member of the middle class.
But the injuries sustained in a match often took more than a week to heal.

Immediately after, Audiss considered another matter: I'm worried about not having any real combat opportunities. I can use the underground fighting arena, the no-rules real combat, to hone my fighting skills.
The middle-aged man saw that Audiss wasn't speaking and assumed he wasn't satisfied with the reward: "6 pounds for a win, 4 pounds for a loss, how about that?"
He smiled and said, "I can't offer any more. After all, you haven't fought before, and I don't know what your level is. This is the highest price I can give you."
Audiss came back to his senses and asked, "If I can win two matches in a row, how much can I earn in the second match?"
"Young man, you're very confident." The middle-aged man smiled and said, "The second match is 12 pounds!"
"But I must remind you, the people fighting in the arena are all quite skilled."
Audiss said to himself, "In other words, if I win three matches in a row, the third match alone will earn me 24 pounds?"
That way, three matches would earn a total of 48 pounds! Very profitable!
He grinned. Why hadn't he thought of this way to make money before?
The middle-aged man saw Audiss's smile gradually becoming a little creepy. He cleared his throat and said, "If you win three matches in a row, the third match will earn you 50 pounds, but very few people can win three in a row. Don't even think about it."
Audiss didn't seem to hear the middle-aged man's words: "That way, I can earn a total of 74 pounds! Not bad!"
"You…" The middle-aged man was a little helpless. "Forget it, think what you want."
Audiss said, "I'll go with you. I want to fight."
He felt like he couldn't wait!
"Good." The middle-aged man put his fingers in his mouth and whistled loudly. Soon, a small carriage arrived.
After getting into the carriage, the middle-aged man introduced himself. His name was Gels, and he was the manager of an underground fighting arena. Every day, he would scout for new talent in places like fighting clubs.
Audiss nodded, thinking that it could be said that people who fought in underground boxing "depleted" relatively quickly.
The carriage went all the way to the South Bridge area, to a rundown bar in a narrow alley.
Gels led Audiss in, and immediately a bar patron greeted him: "Gels, bringing back a newbie again?"
"This is no newbie." Gels said seriously, "This gentleman is a senior member of the Backlund Fighting Club!"
This explanation only drew laughter. A red-nosed patron laughed and said, "The last big guy was also praised to the skies by you, but he only lasted a minute before his nose was broken."
"Hahaha ~"
The laughter grew louder.
Gels waved his hand impatiently. "Gentlemen, get ready to place your bets!"
As he spoke, he led Audiss to the bar. The bartender immediately opened the bar's partition and then knocked on the door behind it.
The door opened from the inside, revealing a staircase leading down, with a guard inside.
"Cheer up, newbie, try to last a minute!"
"Hahaha ~"
The "cheering" and laughter from behind seemed to lift the roof.
After the door closed, Audiss stopped on the stairs and asked, "Can I place a bet?"
Gels was stunned for a moment, then smiled and said, "Of course!"
Audiss took out his wallet from his pocket: "Let me see, I have 66 pounds, 12 shillings, and 5 pence here. I'll bet it all on myself to win three in a row!"
Gels stared at the stack of money in a daze: "You… you're very wealthy."
Audiss was also slightly stunned. He scrutinized his clothes: "Do I look poor?"
"You… I saw that you weren't wearing a tailcoat or dress suit like a gentleman, and you always take public carriages, so…"
That's why Gels had approached him. If he had known that this guy could take out more than sixty pounds in one go, he would never have asked. If you were so rich, you'd have to be crazy to participate in no-holds-barred fighting.
Audiss said helplessly, "Dress suits are very uncomfortable."
There is nothing wrong with one first one hair one content one in one one look!
"But that's what gentlemen wear."
Audiss spread his hands: "I never wanted to be any damn gentleman."
He didn't continue the topic but handed the money to Gels: "Remember to give me the receipt."
"Okay, okay, okay." Gels quickly took the money. He wouldn't refuse business that came to his door. At the same time, he planned to spend 1 pound himself to bet that Audiss would win the first match. If he won, the odds would be very high, and if he lost, he would only lose 1 pound.
Down the stairs was a large underground space, two or three times larger than the bar above. There were also two other entrances. The only drawback was that the air wasn't very good.
In the center of the space was a large wooden circular fence. On the fence and the ground inside, you could see some long-dried bloodstains.
In addition, this was also the bar's warehouse, piled with some wooden barrels and two simple but sturdy wine racks.
The betting place was a small, dilapidated desk. Behind the desk sat a burly man in his thirties with a fierce face and teeth stained yellow by cigarettes.
Hearing Gels's conversation with the man, Audiss knew that this was Simon, the boss of this underground fighting arena.
After learning that Audiss had bet more than sixty pounds on himself, Simon looked at the somewhat thin young man in front of him with a fierce look: "You've got guts."
Audiss smiled slightly and asked the manager, Gels, "Please prepare a dinner for me. Hmm, preferably not too greasy."
Gels first asked Simon for instructions with his eyes, then nodded: "Okay."
Simon reminded him with a malicious smile: "Better eat less, or you'll feel very uncomfortable if you get punched and throw up later!"
Several thugs behind him laughed unreservedly.
"Thanks for the reminder." Audiss didn't say much. He found a stool and sat down. A dozen minutes later, Gels brought him his dinner.
Pork stewed with tender peas, a large piece of bread, and a cup of cheap tea.
The taste was average, but Audiss wasn't picky. While watching the gamblers who came here to place bets one after another, he ate all the food.
By around eight o'clock in the evening, more than two hundred gamblers had gathered here, and the first match was about to begin.
